  1. if you are looking to take these to Denali or anywhere else that can be super cold, just slap a pair of intuition linein them. Light and warm.... Mmmmm nice!
  2. I am not concerned about the value of my collection... I am just interested in the economics of it all... Yeah... it is a boring topic.
  3. With the recent news of alpinist closing its doors, I have seen a sudden spike in the sale prices of old issues. What is driving this? I mean, I know that all issues before 20 are rare due to the fact that the extras were burned up, but $600 for an entire set on ebay! Yikes! Am I correct in thinking that the earlier issues should be worth more than the later issues due to the fact that less were printed? Obviously the original number 0 is worth tons... but is the #1 worth all that much? Just a few thoughts... let me know what you guys think.
  4. ummm, Grivel still makes crampons and ice tools. they just lost distribution. Distribution for everyone on your list, save Petzl, is crap. As far as stubai is concerned... I believe that you can get a ton of their stuff through liberty mountain sports. Just a tip.
  5. why don't you just use prussiks? cheap and easy...
  6. I'm late to all this vitriol, and I'm not a very competitive or argumentative person. It's kinda shocking really. Mr or Mrs or Ms or whatever GHSC, Could you please provide this community of very real people with your bona fides, including your supervisor's name and contact information? I'm sure that you and your supervisor would like to engage in a discussion about this very real issue in such a way that involves your most active user communities rather than creates a plethora of lawsuits, intense lobbying, and all of the administrative head aches that will come from this... In any event, GHSC is probably a troll. Why? I'm pretty sure that posting like GHSC has done above violates a large number of federal government regulations that pretty much cover all full time employees, and I'm certain that if done from a work computer it is totally illegal. It will be simple enough to subpoena cascadeclimbers and the ip of the poster to determine their identity in the litigation. If any of the above, extremely offensive to me, posting written by GHSC were done with a government computer, well...it sure as heck violates a ton of department of agriculture and interior regulations and guidelines for appropriate use of federally owned internet facilities. Amen crackers... After reading through this thread that has seemed to explode with arguments and emotions; I am left with a few thoughts. 1. First off, the jew comments and hitler comments really aren't needed, are they? Come on... there are more productive, mature ways to vent your frustrations. Don't give all climbers a bad name by your rash and unnecessary, offensive diatribes. 2. This is obviously an issue that most people care deeply about... why don't we come up with some constructive way to address this? (IE get a FS employee on here to explain themselves, and move from there) I am all for these small ideas to grow and actually cause changes. 3. With that vein of thought in mind, who do we actually contact to get some straight info on this topic? just my 2 cents...
  7. wow... it has been a tough week. condolences to all who knew and loved him.
  8. it saddens me to see the rash judgments made by some on this site... my thoughts and prayers are with those who have been personally affected by this. If you are reading this, my heart goes out to you.
  9. RMI, AAI, among others... I am sure some dudes on this board will help you if you throw them a $50 for their time... perhaps some will even do it for free... (or at least a case of beer)
  10. Yikes, that looks like a death wish to me. Get some real instruction, especially in crevasse rescue. That doesn't mean you have to take a class, though I would recommend it... learn from someone who is experienced... a ton of crevasse rescue stuff can be learned in one day.
  11. wow... I didn't know those existed... nice
  12. It looks like the patagonia website has them in stock. I was at the patagonia store in seattle today, and they have a bunch of them. The r1 hoody is my favorite piece of climbing specific clothing... by far. In fact, I am lounging around in it right now. RIGHT NOW! I am not even climbing, and I am wearing it... amazing eh? http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/product_focus.jsp?OPTION=PRODUCT_FOCUS_DISPLAY_HANDLER&style_color=40071-138&patcatcode=MAIN_SP_US.CLOTHING_GEAR.MENS.PULLOVERS
  13. wow... I can't believe that I actually wasted my time by reading this... Come on... I can totally understand wanting to go out climbing... but quit making excuses... get in contact with some local climbers where you live, and leech on to them... When you get here, if you ever do... I am sure you can find someone to climb with.
  14. that is actually a pretty pimpin scarf.. you could keep you energy gel in the pocket, during your night out on the town.
  15. once again... recalling my conversation with some of the head honchos of the dead bird clan: They made a point that with the weakening US dollar, they were losing tons and tons of money since their biggest customers were not worth as much as they used to be in comparison with the Canadian dollar. In order for arcteryx to continue to thrive as a company, and grow; they needed to make the move to china. They know their jackets are expensive, and cannot afford to raise their prices much more. The way it was explained to me, is that arcteryx has their own factory that was set up by their own people. I guess there are a lot of other companies that share factories with each other. (The North Face for instance) Interesting comments, I have enjoyed the read... thanks everyone.
  16. ok. How does everyone feel about this? I mean, anyone who seriously looks at the apparel industry can come to the conclusion that it was only a matter of time until the production was shifted offshore. As far as quality is concerned... I really haven't noticed a difference. I haven't had enough time to thrash my pro shell. I did have the opportunity to talk to the VP of arcteryx about this very subject... and he said that the truth of the matter is that no one really wants to pursue a career in sewing in vancouver. I can totally understand that... a lot of the worlds skilled labor in this department is in China. As far as the fact that the price of the jackets hasn't been lowered, is just wishful thinking. Arc'teryx is a business, and last time I checked, canada still has a capitalistic economy... so Arc'teryx is in existence to make money. We now live in a world where the market is global... this is a fact of life. Now, we all have the choice of what we want to buy and companies we want to support. Go ahead and choose an inferior garment, as long as it gives you warm fuzzies because you are doing something good. If you click that link that was provided, someone made the comment that they will continue to buy from patagonia because they have a clear mission statement about saving the earth etc. etc. I am not sure that they know that even patagonia makes a lot of their stuff in china. *gasp* I am really interested to see what other people think about this movement, and if they have found the quality of arcteryx to be lacking this season. I hope not... that was the major downfall of TNF. Hope it doesn't happen to Arc'teryx.
  17. wow... i am in love
  18. baltoro, since you seem to be quite knowledgeable about all things marmot, how does the primaloft sb compare to the stuff used in the ultralamina? (thermic micro cf)
  19. great little get together, if you ask me. Yeah... those kids dominated the competition... sure underestimated them. one guy got the v-thread in 48 seconds! SNAP! and the pull-up champ did like 26, and I bet he could do more. wow... I have to work out more.
  20. great pics and thanks for the inspiration!
  21. after seriously considering one for my eldorado, I decided against it. Basically for the above reasons. Besides, do you really want to carry the extra weight?
  22. I have a Nallo 3, and love it to death. Great base camp tent
  23. ok, time to bring this thread back... now that the tools are out, what are your impressions? I have heard a few negative things about the vipers... something about how they are too light, and don't stick that well... is this true? How closely do the new vipers compare with the old ones? If I was only going to buy one set of tools, would it be worth the extra cash to get the cobras? And, lastly... what makes the cobras worth so much more than the vipers... (besides the carbon fiber... I know that stuff is pricey). thanks
  24. oh no... not another rei haters thread.... haven't we seen enough of these?
  25. hey eric, I have a cilogear 60L sz. med if you want to check it out. I am near Lynnwood. The best pack... period.
