Trip: Mt Hood - West Crater Descent
Date: 6/20/2007
Trip Report:
Justin and I wanted to take advantage of the clear weather window this week and get some skiing in on Hood. Wednesday seemed to be the day.
We left Portland at 4:00 or so and were skinning a little before 6:00. My camera remained in the car The snow was firmer than expected given the freezing levels and emerging sun. We booted up to the summit from about 9500 feet which is a lot lower than I like to be taking the skis off!
Our hope was to ski some corn on the West Crater side of the mountain. I had been eyeing up a couple of open steeper sections from prior outings. However, I am guilty of being a little optimistic on my estimation of when the snow would soften and we were skiing some pretty firm stuff up top. The West Crater section near Illumination Saddle seemed to be getting plenty of sun. When we got there, it was still firm, suncupped and full of emerging rocks from a winter of rockfall. Well it is backcountry skiing. We did manage to find some smoother soft snow about 1/2 way down. That was sweet.
Below Crater Rock, we were on better snow and the lower angle slopes. Skiing was fast and furious. The summer ski\snowboard camps are in full swing so Timberline was packed!
It was great to get out and climb and ski on a nice day. The snow could have been better, but it is late June and this former Midwesterner has no qualms about getting turns in on a real mountain with real snow from the top all the way back to the car. Hindsight said to climb slower or leave later for better corn.
We were back in Portland around 1PM and I managed to put a 1/2 day of work in.
