my annoyance with external poles (on my marmot 'up high' tent) is that it makes a less smooth exterior of the tent and adds to the snow accumulation on the walls. in windy, wintery conditions at least.

soft shell = good stuff in the snow, for the most part. but if it does get wet, i find that it doesn't dry as fast as your more breathable fleecies (ie R2 patagonia stuff)
