  1. Is there a good free sleeping spot close off I5 between Shasta and Sacramento? A place where one could sleep on the ground near the car between 11pm and 5am without much chance of being hassled. Thanks!
  2. My guess is you're not getting any responses since very few have done it in late season conditions. Based on poking around off route a bit, I'd wager that it's considerably more effort and more dangerous than the standard route. Certainly let us know what you find.
  3. Don't know if you are monitoring this thread anymore. Sent you a PM
  4. S.sister trailhead is about 3-3.5 hours drive from Eugene, BTW. Unless we are having a freakishly bad drought, the road will be closed at Bachelor by Thanksgiving and you'll be looking at a 23 mile day through early season unconsolidated snow.
  5. The main reason few people climb there is the climbing just isn't that good. Sure, there's a few fun pitches. Folks spend a few days or a week and then move on. It will never be overrun with crowds, and that is pretty much its best attribute.
  6. I have not been up there this year but my guess is that it will be snowfree by August 20 +/- a week. BTW, it is possible to get a good view from the Old Mckenzie Highway near Dee Wright Observatory or a few miles west. With binocs and afternoon light you can get a very clear scope of the route.
  7. Probably do something Saturday. Sunday doesn't look that fortuitous for a pleasant outing with views.
  8. What is the difference between South Climb TH and Cold Springs TH? I thought they were the same thing.
  9. Are you really the same windshirt kid everyone was picking on 10 years ago, nolse?
  10. Check out 17:00 in this OPB special on Hood http://watch.opb.org/video/2217365691/
  11. The Forest Service has updated the Pole Creek Fire closure: http://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/centraloregon/alerts-notices/?aid=17461 It is not clear if the road to the trailhead is open to cars but people are allowed back in to the area as long as they stay on the trails.
  12. Cascade Lakes Highway is open. Snowpack is light and melting fast.
  13. I'm not sure what the plan for Pole Creek is. I don't think there is much snow up there - people are mountain biking up to 5500' right now on the trails off Century Drive. I imagine we will hear something from the forest service soon. I'm thinking that there is more of a normal snowpack up in WA Cascades. Is that right?
  14. Anyone have a feel for when the forest service might lift the fire closure from the Cascade Creek fire and allow access to the standard south side climb on Adams this summer? thanks!
  15. Hope folks got their Sisters fix in this week as the Pole Creek area will likely be closed for a spell: http://sharmanian.blogspot.com/2012/09/ice-and-fire-pole-creek-fire.html Also, hope everyone gets out safely and didn't loose a car at the trailhead.
  16. Looks like the NW side of South, not the North Ridge? Should be lots of people on the marathon this year, with the route melted out for the first time since 2009! I'll be out there in a few weeks, heading South to North.
  17. I'm looking for a partner for a quick lap on the DC on Rainier. Dates flexible, weekdays preferred. I'm hoping for someone who is confident in their fitness to do 7 to 8 hours round trip but if you have any interest, send me a PM and we will discuss the possibilities.
  18. That footage of the copter going down was crazy. 2 hours 6 minutes round trip from Timberline! Really? Amazing. I'd have guessed the best time to be 2:40ish, maybe 2:30 but 2:06? Wow.
  19. Yes, the route saw a lot of traffic that week. We were up there on Monday the 12th on our 5 peak linkup. I know of half a dozen Three Sisters IAD parties that went for it between mid and late September. Once word got out that the traverse was open, people sure got after it. I wonder what kind of snowpack we will see this coming summer. -Brett
  20. I would not go out of my way to defend the SE Ridge by pretty much any criterion. I feel I should note however, that I have spent a ridiculously foolish amount of time seeking out the fastest way between Pole Creek and the summit. Unfortunately, the SE ridge is that route. IMO one of the greatest feats of athleticism in the history of Central Oregon Cascades, in late August 2009 Mitch Thompson went car to summit via the SE Ridge in 1:51. Certainly, most are not so focused on speed. I think the route is still quite popular as it is direct and safe and no alternatives really avoid the scree. The SW ridge is worse, IMO, though for much shorter distance. Getting off the glacier and on the ridge is horrid, dangerous or both. -Brett
  21. Very nice pictures. I've said "no" probably a dozen times but keep forgetting. Its one of those strange love hate things.
  22. BTW, it is exactly 10 years since the Wenger Bros ventured out there with JR, picked the plumb Space Between and set all this in motion. Good times.
