Second this. Super cool little skis. I've got the Silvretta Mouse Traps on mine. I scrounge old woodies out of the dump for edge repair. May they last forever.....

Today got my hands on Stevens snowfall records back to 51-52. Big winner was 55-56 with 967 inches including 96" in October! Worst bummer to date was 80-81 with 236" If anybody cares I can take a few & put up the whole deal.

Having gone from the monstrous wooden ones to the early Tubbs (which are still hangin' together) I'm continually amazed at how "little" most of the snowshoes look. I mean...people haven't gotten lighter on the whole, and I'm pretty sure the basic physical properties of snow haven't changed...do those little dinky ones really give any meaningful amount of flotation?

Asked around and as can best be recalled Stevens Pass operated fifty some days in the dry winter of 76-77. This season, by comparison, they have been able to run twenty one.

Itsup Creek yes, I think...Mystic Lake, Carbon Glacier & such. Don't remember the exact distances involved(4? miles)but you can trot right down there from Mowich Lake; you probably won't like it so much hoofing it back UP on the way home.

y'know...different thread and all but every time I turn around it seems like the Feds are trying to prove me right. Republican, Shmublican; they all belong to the same union.

So with an utter lack of snow it still takes them until 9AM to get the road open? I believe it. Back in the day they typically had it before 8 even after heavy overnite snowfall. A couple of years ago we were marooned at Longmire until after 10 on a clear morning with no overnite precip. Asked the guy running the gift shop deal what their problem was; he replied that "it's like Russia under Kosygin, because they can"

Don't know about stopping ALL junk mail but in the fine print on credit card offers is an 800 number you can call so you never get another credit card offer. Worked for me, haven't gotten one in years. As to junk mail in general, the Index PO has a big recycle box just arm's reach from the window, an excellent and heavily used public service. Lobby for one in your neighborhood....

Hoping it's not so horribly obvious as to not need mentioning but something else comes to mind. that is, if you're relying on air travel out you should plan a little for that being delayed or, if you're extremely unlucky, impossible ...you should have enough food for a pretty good wait and/or a plan to hoof it if necessary.

Just wonderin' and meanin' no overt disrespect but...presuming a camp somewhere on the Tellot amidst about a billion or so cubic yards of ice...just why would you need an ice chest? I spent a couple of weeks there once back in the day. I recall wishing for snowshoes or lite skis during afternoon thigh deep postholing. I also recall wishing I had airdropped a lot less stuff as I was packing it down the Tellot to Ephemeron Lake. Go big on consumable treats however as in the wrong year you could spend several of those days in yer tent.

You are correct as is the post above in relating that there is a lot more poor judgement in the BC than there once was. I can add only that both these are escalating:e.g. that both bad judgement and the attitude that misfortune constitutes a winning lottery ticket are on the rise. Ultimately, I believe, we must reverse both these trends. It would be interesting to figure out how much, out of every consumer dollar spent, is thereby sucked up...never mind the ever increasing losses in personal freedom of choice they cause.

Winter of 76-77 remains the standard against which all crummy ski seasons are measured. Stevens ran only a fraction of the season; I can no longer remember the details but I will check. I do recall a group of us went up to the secret arsenic mine up on Ragged Ridge on New Year's '77 and encountered balmy temps and absolutely no snow up around 5000' or so. Compare that to this year when I was able to ride a bike to Jack's Pass on Jan 4 with only a little snow the last quarter mile.

In a more perfect world: Back country skiers would exhibit an absolute degree of personal responsibility and self reliance. There would be zero regulation of OB skiing. There would be zero expectation of rescue OB. There would be zero perceived obligation to rescue OB. Rescue operations that did take place OB would be strictly voluntary and free of charge. I abhor the current day climate of increased regulation...howeva...there are an incresing number of OB incidents involving those who exhibit zero common sense and/or intelligence. these seem to make such regulation inevitable. I guess it's not all recent; I distinctly recall getting hassled by the Patrol at Crystal over thirty years ago when a small group of us wanted to buy single ride tickets to ski OB there. "We have to go out and rescue you and blah, blah, blah." Bullshit. No-one was ever forced at gunpoint into the S&R trade.

No beer? That's whiskey weather anyway. -
Sun Conure? Nibbly little suckers...keep yer shorts on. Cool bird

Stuff was slabbing off everywhere today. I would be super careful OB just now with that weak layer under yesterday's dump.

Lefty Frizelle and Merle Haggard are pretty indespensable as would be Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle. Absolutely essential, however, to your C&W collection are the two great tear jerkin' truckin' tunes: Phantom 409 and Giddyup Go. Oh, Yeah...Jerry Jeff Walker Closeted or not, immoderation in C&W listening will induce vomiting.

This could be a repeat, I haven't read the whole thread: "the early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese."

From a distance, mind you, Index it self is looking "thin". There hasn't been much precip or freeze/thaw to speak of so I bet what is up there is more snow than ice. Just guessing though, I'm down here... Bridalveil Falls is freezing up though....

Good Lord. If you had hunkered down on that wet-ass second growth for sixty-eighty years you'd be mossy too. Check out the Coper Belle mine while you're up there.
