Hospital visits/stays should always be the last resort. Speaking of hand washing.. At the gym where I work out, I informally kept track one busy day (just curious, No I dont usually watch men using the t'let in the locker room). Out of 10 dudes who came out of the restroom in about 2-3 minutes, only 5 of them put their hands under the faucet. 4 of them used soap, one guy just rinsed his hands for about 2 seconds. In this day and age, I find this disgusting! I always disinfect the equipment with alchohol before using it.

For all you flat earth society members, aka *anthropogenic global warming* deniers, aka faithfully ignorant... This person (Elizabeth Kolbert) was on the "Dave Ross" show (radio) today and was very blunt, intelligent, articulate and well informed/educated. Her book is probably a great read. Here's, the book "Field Notes From a Catastrophe" link--->http://www.powells.com/biblio?PID=25450&cgi=product&isbn=1596911255 Here's an interview with the author link-->http://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2006/04/10/roberts/

Hey, (not to sound too much like kevbone but...) I read on a bottle cap that there is this particular mushroom underground in Oregon that is like a couple miles square in size. Can someone confirm this is so?

Its not the film that's alarming. Maybe I just think it sucks to have the "good fortune" of being among the last generation of people to see some of the 75% (optimistic) of the North Cascade glaciers that will be gone within the next 40 years.

"The biggest thing I have a problem with is this implication that Katrina was caused by global warming." Ooooo! How dare that commie Al gore imply such a thing. Oooooooo! How dare he!! Burn him. he's a witch! Buurrrrn him!!

Dannible said: Personally I don't think a completely non-compulsory permit system would amount to much, but regardless of whatever yours or my opinion on this is, to attempt to argue a point of philosophy while in a purely legal context (how the original post cames across to me) like explaining your case in front of a judge who's job it is to rule based on what the law says (not on what anyone thinks of the law or why the law was meant for others because "we were very prepared" etc,) is naive at best, and maybe -from the judges point of view- presumptive or even arrogant. But as I stated, I have some experience and Im certainly no fan of judges in general. You have sound reasoning and valid points to be heard and made for a policy debate, but certainly not for a court of law. Thats just the way it is because we all have to co-operate to some degree and how we have set that co-operation up in this society is thru laws and the like. And, fortunately or unfortunately this also means aplying those laws equally (at least attempting to) to all. No you guys weren't Jane or Joe hiker clueless and unprepared, you gotz skills. So what? Is there a provision in the law that says if you know what you are doing then you get to travel sans permit? That maybe good for some but bad for others if there were such a clause, but there's not. So, like others have also said, you took a chance based on your own philosophy and choosing and now you should just accept that and fight on in the proper context, ie letters, elections, public meetings, organizing etc. Your far from alone in being somewhat uneasy with a permit system to gain access to public land. Unfortunately though in years to come there will be even more regulations and restrictions imposed as impact and threats of further impact are always on the increase. As to your (any climbers) "specialness", your Mom and Dad no doubt think you're special. I am impressed by any persons climbing accomplishments. But I don't kid myself either (as you apparently don't). There is nothing special about vertical crawling. It looks funny, takes a good deal of time and money, and accomplishes almost nothing for the greater good. It is something that seems to arise out of an anti social- neurotic impulse deep within the individual. It involves a lot of inconvenience and needless suffering. It only brings confusion and heartache to those close to us who do not partake of such self indulgence and to boot, half of it happens only in our own mind. Special, yeah, id say your special. Have you met Ed?

and I believe (seeing her pics in several guides) climbed many of those peaks before many here were even ready to shit in their diaper

I guess I just don't get the whole "park rangers are tools" and the "we are so special because we be doin extreme-o-rama light n fast climbin thing", as opposed to the rest of you losers who actually NEED permits. Its all so Dean Potterish to me.

forgot to put another "0" in there, oops

A more current example: At my place the current temp is 48 deg f 48 - 32 = 16 16 x 100 = 16,000 16,000 div by 3.5 = 4571 4571 + my current elevation (400ft) = 4971 ft frz lvl (current) snow level is aprox 4000 ft or less (at my location currently) It should get down to say 44 deg f tonight which should drop the freeze level (at my location) down to around 3829 ft give or take. I always liked this site too---> http://i90.atmos.washington.edu/roadview/i90/ .

"Washington Ice" (the book) has this formula but I don't get why this complexity is so necessary. (temperature - 32deg) X 1000) divided by 3.5deg) + current elevation = freezing level Snow levels are from 1-2000 feet lower depending on the intensity of the precip system. example: (54 degrees current temp - 32 degrees = 22deg) X 1000 = 22000) divided by 3.5 = 6286ft) + 400 ft = 6686 ft freezing level and a snow level of aprox 5600 or less ft.

Dannible said: Im sure you guys are cool in person and great climbers. But the *I think it should go faster and be this way* etc.. and *We are different..* type thing seems to be the crux of the problem imo. It comes across even now as a bit selfish and arrogant. Not a big deal unless a law gets broke in which case it may become part of the issue. Thanks for your comments Ranger Kelly.

might want to revisit the North Cascade glaciers while yr at it b'cause they might likely be gone in your lifetime as well.

Blake that sucks. Don't take this wrong but heres my observation going (of coarse) just off what you posted. Having gone before judges in my kids custody case a few times, I can say that the ones Ive experienced are pretty much arrogant cynical pricks who rather enjoy fucking with people that rub them the wrong way for some trivial reason. They have the power of life and death in some cases and they know it and love it. They revel in their "God-like" role. Should one decide to contest, one should realize that your already basically taking the role of antagonist and you'd better be clear about what and why your doing it and the sound and legal reasoning behind it. Short of that, just pay the fine. From what you stated it sounded for awhile like you were going to get to the point. But if thats how it went down it ended up sounding like you were trying to come off as smarter than the law and were just searching for an excuse to get out of it. Especially this part: It might have went better if you simply apologized a few times, sounded sad (maybe even shed a few tears) and briefly explained that you were in dire straights financially, but then he may have took you as a whiner anyway. As dumb and obvious as it may sound, its generally advised to put on your humble best in court (which is a really tough thing to do when you also have to believe you are right). If you come off as though you are expecting something or deserving of something or that you know something that they don't , well my experience is that things well not go as you expect. If you even hint that you think the law is stupid or that you have little respect for the law etc, you will feel a big thump. As the judge mentioned several times in our case "You don't want me making this desision". He was right, the fucking prick. Just be glad your not poor and being tried for something really serious. Be glad your not one of the innocent people doing time right now who happened to have a bad lawyer and a judge who woke up on the wrong side of the bed that day!
