Thanks much for the responses. I don't yet feel to the point of needing surgery, however, due to the metatarsalgia (ball of foot pain) I was 'limping' out from Washington pass last trip once we got down on the flat trail (flat smooth terrain sucks). I may end up getting custom orthotics after all. Recommendations on a good sports oriented podiatrist in Seattle are much appreciated too.

So Im looking for a bit of advice/education if anyone wishes to share some.. My Right foot = Normal to high arch. (via foot print image observation) Progressing Bunion on large toe big joint (the usual place). Pain on Ball of foot, and also thru the length of second toe. My Left Foot = Low to Flat arch. Pain in/below/around large outside ankle bone. Ankle sprains reoccurring always in the same place, namely (in/below/around large outside ankle bone). -- Problems increase the more I train/hike/climb. I tried rest, but the issues just return the more I train/hike/climb. My feeling is that long periods in narrow constricting climbing shoes might be part of the issue - an untreated bunion might be part of the issue - some kind of "pronation-supination" might be part of the issue. Ive tried "SuperFeet" (Orange) but the RF metatarsalgia (ball of foot pain) gets worse with them for some reason. At this point, I guess I'm mostly interested in what and how to get or make the correct orthotic type inserts or insoles. Being that each foot has different issues, I don't see how one type of insert could correct all the issues. For example, would I want a higher arched insert on my left foot and a lower arch insert on my right? What might help stop the LF ankle sprains from reoccurring? More (deeper) heel cups? Who/what/where? (BTW, Theyve only occurred when running on smooth surfaces in "running" shoes - cheap cross trainers actually - never on rough terrain). I don't think much of the gel cushions that role your ankle off and offer no stabilizing support imo. So, any thoughts or suggestions? - especially on the best insoles/inserts would be cool. Thanks yooz D

This "NOVA" episode was quite good: > http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/marathon/program.html'>http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/marathon/program.html < They got some couch potatoes up to train for -and run- the Boston Marathon. You can watch the whole video online and it has good info on training, nutrition, VO2 max, injuries, and benefits of exercise etc.. Very apropos (I think) vis-a-vis endurance/slog training. Be sure to read the supplemental texts: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/marathon/

In the heat of passion, I bet I could get Ann to admit a few things... "C'mon Ann, Baby, say it!!! Trotsky! Emma Goldman! John Muir! Rachel Carson! C'mon baby, let it go and scream!! HEALTH CARE FOR ALL!!!!!"

Windows Media Player plays DVD files doesn't it? Cant you just choose "save as" an avi using the media player panel? Maybe not? Coarse you will only end up with the "inferior" DVD quality show as opposed to true avi files -which are much sharper when played on a computer.

As far I know, the "leaching" of the chemicals varies according to the grade/type of plastic. Nalgene is pretty hard stuff and thus may leach less than say "Dasani" water bottles and such - which shouldn't be continuously reused because they degrade sooner and thus may leach more. Plastic pollution overall though is fast becoming the next environmental catastrophe (behind GW) of our age. It may be one factor in causing some "male" Bass near D.C. to turn up with eggs in their sex organs. Suspended microscopic particles of plastic have been found in the most remote ocean waters and in sea life across the globe. If you eat fish, you probly ingesting micro-plastics as well. Recycle please dudes and dudettes - and vote!

Shit, I still feel that way and probably always will - at least I plan to. JayB, Would mom forgive you if you'd happened to crater while climbing? The kid lacked experience and had a (too?) strong romantic vision near as I can tell. He also could not understand nor accept the poverty we have in the US. Thank grog there are such types from time to time.

narcissistic yes, But I don't agree with him being self "righteous" though if that was meant. On some level he had a deep belief I think, but if he thought he was "right" I don't think he would have put himself through such unpredictable challenges. He didn't know something about himself - there was a big doubt in there. I think it might come down to having some of "it" is good and gets you to accomplish. Having too much is bad because it blinds you and will likely push you too far aka over the edge aka kill you. Whittaker? said once that "mountaineering requires drive, but if you have too much drive it will kill you." I guess I see that much in common with Chris.

Ok, it wasn't my last thought.. Back in my late teens early 20's, some friends of mine got air dropped into the Canadian Arctic for a long river journey. Among the highlights, they got charged by muskoxen (scary shit) and almost starved to death because there was no plane to pick them up - the chartered bush pilot had forgotten about them.

Dat be deep (and accurate I think) CBS. Colin? Wayne? Erden? come to mind. Dannible - your like still 20ish right? Yr like right there still. Porter, the sound track is def kewl! Music makes or breaks any film if you ask me. A last quick thought, maybe I won't harsh on noob Hood F/ups so much from now on.

Actually, we here (at "Strat-O-cast Productions" lol) could do it in like 10 minutes, have it on DVD in less than an hour. Still on dial-up though so no real upload capabilities at present.

"Into the Wild".. Ive known about Chris McCandless's story for years (vaguely in the back of my mind) and read the outside article a few times - not the book. I'll probably see the movie this weekend. I don't think of Chris as "heroic", but I also don't think of him as inept or suicidal. The movie likely won't change much about my opinion of him or his actions. In my early twenties (im 46), I experimented a bit with the wondering vagabond method of self discovery as did a lot of young men I new. Re-reading the story and planning to see the film has brought a little bit of that yearning (for lack of a better term) out from my past and I recognize "it" today as my desire to climb. IE, its the same thing I had then, just slightly more structured and technical. Although Im a dad, I guess I never completely grew up...yet. So, Are you familiar with the story? Read the Book? Seen or plan to see the movie? Do you see yourself in Chris/ he in you? Are you now too jaded and "experienced" to be moved by someone elses (Chris's) innocence and passion? Any deep thoughts about said topic? ...Maybe a "STFU NOOB?"

I am beyond feminism I am gaia-androgolisious I only have sex with the Earth. It is mutually sustainable. Satisfaction is patriarchal, obsolete and has nothing to do with it.

CHE! Apparently, he played too much competitive sports as a child.

I will say this though, I have had sex with both women who would or did *CALL* themselves feminists, and women who probably *ARE/WERE* feminists but did not use the term. Between the two, the ones that "ARE/WERE" are much preferred.

Will our performance be better if we use this visualization during the act?

what a freakin cool sport! Never thought I'd get to the point of saying that, but since my daughter began playing it (U-12) this year I've become a fan. Its really a lot like 'merican foot ball (which Ive always liked n grewup playin) sept you can't use yr hands n stuff and da ball is roundish (recently discovered). It has "fullbacks" and "halfbacks", offense, defense and tackling, and it has passing and plays and strategies etc,. Did I mention that her team is now 4 and 1? They seriously got a great coach! I used to think it was "for sissies" but really, these girls are tough and take some hits. I hope Seattle gets a major league team because as soon as Im finished reading all teh soccer info webpages I'll be ready to coach it Pressure up! Challenge. Deny the Turn. GO TEAM!!!

Anyone "anal" enough to call themselves a feminist... well you get my drift

Ironically, 60 minutes just had piece on this tonight. So many "mega-fires" nowadays burning up the Western US forests. And tonight, also ironically, Malibu CA. http://news.google.com/nwshp?tab=wn&ncl=1122444127&hl=en&topic=n Personally, I believe its gotta be some kind of totalitarian plot designed to take away my constitutional rights, make gasoline and energy costs too expensive for the average person to afford, force me to pay higher taxes for needless big government endeavors, take away my options for getting health care.. In other words, it must be the Demo...ah...wait a second...I mean... ..it must be the Republicans who are behind it. Oh my...did I just say that?
