    war/oil

Iraq is producing over 2 million barrels of oil per day. http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/ipsr/t11a.xls It doesn't matter whether Iraq is a member of OPEC or not. OPEC sets output based upon the competitive supply (from countries such as Russia) and the residual demand remaining. They set output in order to maintain their higher prices. OPEC isn't the only reason why we are paying higher prices for gas. Take a look at the trend in global oil demand http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/ipsr/t24.xls Just a few corrections: it's Syria, not "siria"; gas, not "gass"; Saudi, not "sadi"; and Afghanistan, not "afganistan." This is not a "good oil/war thread." It is a comical conspiracy theory backed by a lack of factual data or sound economic thinking. If your economics instructor promulgated this idea, I would ask the community college for my money back.

    antitobacco prejudice

I think it's nasty too. I NEVER dip or chew (tobacco that is) in front of my mom, sister, or any female friends (does that make me a chauvinist?). My buddies are a different story; I love to taunt the one who puked when he tried a little Cope Actually, not very many people know I chew. I mainly do it when I have to sit in front of this damn box or on my couch doing seemingly endless homework.

Skoal Long Cut Wintergreen or Copenhagen Long Cut for me, depending upon my mood. Smoking cigarettes is just plain nasty, though.

    Beef conspiracy

That guy is a moron. The disease in humans associated with "mad cow disease" is new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob's disease. Guess how many people in the United States have died from that disease? Answer: one. One person, and that individual was exposed to the disease in the U.K. In total, 156 people worldwide have died from this disease; hardly and "epidemic." Practices such as feeding cattle meat and bone meal (widely believed to have caused the initial outbreaks in the U.K.) have been banned. This guy is just another alarmist conspiracy theory wack job looking for a cause. Hopefully he doesn't still walk around with foil wrapped around his head to keep the the "brain scrambler" on Sputnik from cooking his non-existent brain. Keep eating beef in moderation, it is good for you (lots of iron, protein, and fat). http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/cjd/cjd_fact_sheet.htm http://www.bseinfo.org/dsp/dsp_locationContent.cfm?locationId=1262

  18. I thought it was pretty cool. It's always fun to see homemade shit. Anyway, there was some camera bounce that made it a little screwy. My only compaint is that fu#%ing sideways camera action. That crack climb looked good (a little sketchy at the top?), but the camera was too far away and watching it with my head cocked at a 90 degree angle took away from it. It was fun to watch though, so keep 'em coming. For those that don't want to wait for the download: dive into the 21st century and get broadband.

  20. Thanks for all the information, I've just started looking into some of the routes mentioned. Depending upon conditions, the Skywalker Coulouir on Arapaho is looking mighty attractive. In regard to Flatiron closures: from what I've gathered so far, they close the parts of the area that are within raptor breeding grounds. Anyway, thanks again for the help.

    Just a stupid rant

From the CBO study: "... CBO does, however, include in its measure of household income realized capital gains reported on individual income tax returns, but it does not adjust those gains for inflation because of limitations in the data." Here are a couple of other things to consider when reading interpretations of the data: "A second, and related, limitation is that some forms of income come irregularly, particularly capital gains from the sale of a business, of shares of stock, or of another asset. A business owner who sells his firm, for example, will appear wealthy in the year of the sale because of the large capital gain realized at that time, even though the increase in the firm's value accrued over a much longer period. Placing that person near the top of the income distribution in the year of the sale and at a much lower rank in other years misstates his economic status in all years, overstating it in one and understating it in all others" The Department of the Treasury has constructed longitudinal files for a random sample of taxpayers over periods as long as 10 years, which have been used to examine the year-to-year variation in income for individuals. Those data indicate that there is significant movement of taxpayers within the income distribution but that year-to-year shifts tend to be small. For example, over the 1979-1988 period, roughly half of all taxpayers who were ever in the top 1 percent of all families were in that percentile for only one year. At the same time, virtually none of those who ever appeared in the top 1 percent were ever below the top 10 percent of taxpayers ranked by annual income More importantly, this study really wasn't designed to measure income disparity, it was designed to analyze tax distribution. One last quote from the CBO study: The study's principal goal is to understand the distribution of federal taxes, not to examine the distribution of income either for a single year or over time. To the extent possible, given the limitations of the available data, the study examines the distribution of federal taxes using measures of income that reflect the relative economic positions of households. Compromises result from missing information about specific sources of income as well as the lack of longitudinal data http://www.cbo.gov/showdoc.cfm?index=3089&sequence=3

    Just a stupid rant

Below is a link to some of the raw data that underlies the NY Times piece and the study quoted. It is interesting to note that incomes of ALL grew in real terms over the 34 years in the tables. As you go up in the income distribution the rates of increase also rise. However, note that the poor DID NOT get poorer. I will refrain from any normative analysis about what it all means, I just wanted to provide some additional facts to the discussion. I would suggest looking at tables IE-3, H-3,F-2, and F-3. http://www.census.gov/hhes/income/histinc/ineqtoc.html
  23. I am going to be in Boulder in July for a family reunion and I'm thinking about going out a week or so before the reunion. Any recommendations? I'll likely be solo, so I'd prefer class 3-4 routes. Also, with any recommendations, could you please give me an idea where I can get more route info, etc?
