  1. Matt I would have to agree that the original petzl headlamp provides plently of light with a halogen (even with the regular bulb depending on what your needs are). However, as you said, it has turned on in my pack on more than one occasion. I'm pretty good about taking the battery out these days, though, and that seems to be an easy solution. A friend of mine has the "strobe light" feature that you speak of, so I'm not sure it is a glitch. We couldn't figure out why it did that either, other than offering a backcountry disco option!
  2. Is that going to be the cd version as originally planned, or is it coming out in book form?
  3. I saw them when I was 16; truly an amazing experience.
  4. I was up there last week. After the climb we were hanging out by Ingalls lake and by 5pm the skeeters were getting brutal. Once we got moving they weren't a problem, though. Have fun!
  5. although my opinion is limited in experience, it seems that the bolts out at darrington were placed/replaced with a lot of thought. the difficult moves are protected by a bolt where gear is not available, and the easier climbing is usually run-out. this is nice because even the easier climbing becomes somewhat "thought provoking".
  6. Wedding in Chicago tonight/tomorrow Back for Radiohead on Sunday Exfoliation Dome on Monday
  7. Greg_W, I still am thankful for that conversation. I have only purchased a couple hexes since we had that talk, and have yet to run out of gear on a single pitch. What should I do with all the money I saved?
  8. the corn isn't the only crop that is brown in the midwest!
  9. Not very long ago I was doing some multi-pitch slab climbing and my partner started to "slide". He was sliding fairly slow so I pulled in a few arm lengths of slack and then locked off as he began to pick up speed. This cut off about ten feet of his fall, after which he was very appreciative. I am only talking about one particular situation here, as coming up with "absolutes" that apply to every situation is difficult. All I am saying is that there are situations in which reeling in slack has helped my partners and I enough to make a difference.
  10. Nice work! Good luck on HD.
  11. If they fall within the wilderness area, that means there is not supposed to be any fixed gear or the use of power drills. This doesn't stop everyone from doing so, however.
  12. thats why the leader should trail it, so that the follow can retrieve it, if it gets stuck that is a good point. i guess if the second is going to bring up the rope, they should do so in a day pack as suggested earlier. but to answer your question, dryad, i have not gotten it stuck...............YET!
  13. Dryad Usually when I climb routes that require double rope rappels, the second trails the rope. Last time I tried leading with two 10.5 mm ropes instead of having the second trail. I found that it has the advantage of reducing rope drag (especially at D'Town), but once 75 to 100 ft. of rope was out it began to get heavy and weigh my weak ass down. It also has the advantage of added safety if one of your ropes gets chopped. Give it a try on lead. I'm sure you'll see what I mean once 75 or 100 ft. of rope is out. Personally, I'm just going to buy double 9mm for such climbs.
  14. These photos are absolutely beautiful. Nice work dudes! I am inspired to take on a project this grand some day when my experience allows, but for now I'm shooting for East Ridge on Ingalls!!

  16. Woohoo! Silent Running was incredible! We had perfect weather, too. It was great to finally climb at Darrington without being baked to a crisp or rained on one pitch up. When did you guys do Silent Running? We were on Silent Running on Saturday. Our feet were back on the ground before anyone else showed up to 3:00 rock. Beautiful day, great company, solitude, and great rock. I love D'Town!
  17. how about for an outback (or is that what you drove)?
  18. Would you guys not recommend driving to the end of the road? Glad you had fun despite the setback!
  19. it is a couple of miles past the 3:00 rock trailhead, according to Mattp's website.
