    am i an asshole

I agree with you 100% but I was only referencing our culture. Still, it is Erik's decision. Should he be considered an asshole for not subjecting himself to a norm that has been socially constructed by others?

    am i an asshole

I think there are many ways to view this. In the Western culture the societal norm is to mourn death. By this regard you could be considered an asshole. However, it seems as though you reject those norms and choose another for yourself. So in the end, you yourself are not an asshole; but others who are subject to the more widely excepted norm of mourning death may think you are (unjustly, if you ask me).

That's what I'm talking about Doc!

    Tips

I would have to say "nothing". In my short tenure, the times when I am able to focus on nothing is when I have climbed at my personal best. Don't envision yourself moving forward; just move forward.
  5. I would like to see them, though I'm not sure I can make it to the slide show
  6. The coast can be a fun place to get weathered. If you hike in at Cape Alava and head south for a ways you get away from the day trippers and catch some serious solitude. I have been there for days without seeing a single person. It is more of a drive than you may be looking for, though.

    More on taxes

It's not a matter of "hurting." It is a matter of entitlement; the government claims an entitlement to the earned wealth of people who work hard and are successful. They exercise this entitlement in an unfair, and unequal way. They punish, in essence, those who have made themselves successful by imposing upon them higher taxes.
  8. thanks, mattp. this time of year i am forced to alter my standard of 'dry'. we'll see, though, because i find those slabs to be scary even when they are dry!
  9. i'm in total denial! i think a trip out to d'town will help it sink in though!
  10. Does anyone know about how many days of sun are needed to dry the slabs at 3:00 rock after a week or so of sustained rain?
  11. Probably the most valuable part of the Long books is that he puts pictures of anchor set-ups, and then evaluates them. However, after looking at about four or five pictures, I realized, at least at the moderate level, placing gear and building anchors is common sense. I'm sure once you get into harder routes and less traveled environments that changes, but we are talking about first trad leads here.

    Monorail

This (Monorail) will never get built. They completely lied about how much it would cost. When they come up short on the cash, they will blame taxpayers for evading. Had the election been about two weeks later, it never would have passed. Just wait until you see the next regional transportation package!! HA!!!!!
  13. Having not attended a climbing "event" before, I'm unsure how this all works. If I just show up on Saturday morning, will there be people to climb with, or do you all arrange that before you go?
  14. have you checked CAG? i remember seeing something about it in there, but i don't have the book with me right now. i think i rember beckey saying it was 'solid'.

    Dark Ages

Perhaps in my discipline the standard of logic is higher. Actually, logic itself is a standard that applies to all disciplines of scientific inquiry in the same manner. See Kant's Logic; he's the expert.
  16. i have ordered from them twice. on both occasions i ordered late on sunday night and received the package by 10am on friday.
  17. Personally, the last thing I want is for the Northwest to be portrayed as a climbing destination for tourists, at least not any more than it already is. I think keeping the scene on the down low is key. That goes for the politicos as well; the less they know and are involved the better. So if you want feedback to take to the table, then I would ask that you tell them to please let me be; I'll be just fine! I'm only speaking for myself here. Thanks
  18. My intent was not to digress the thread. My point was that debating the bolting issue requires capable actors who truly wish to understand all sides, rather than just having the prevailing argument regardless of truth. I certainly want to understand Dwayner's point of view, as well as Pope's, Mattp's, DCramer's, and everyone else's for that matter. But if everyone is just out to "win" the debate then what is the point of having the discussion in the first place?
  19. I disagree. Humans don't like conflict or strife; it is just necessary when one imposes there will upon another. War exists because the average person lacks the intellectual ability to reach mutual understanding and provide communitcatively rational arguments. Wanting to beat up someone else is again the direct result of intellectual incapacity. I think the point here is that some people can't discuss this issue without letting their emotions completely take over, which results in name calling and other playground type bantor. A discussion that has an aim of reaching mutual understanding requires capable actors; something which is lacking on this site.
  20. have you checked out what pro mountain sports is selling? they seem to consider weight on every item. i can't give you specific recommendations, though. their website advertises a light waterproof bivy on the front page
  21. damn! i'm definitely not a large. i'm all bones!!!
  22. I'm in the market for a new rain shell. Can anyone recommend a good shell for climbing/moutaineering besides Arc'Teryx (I'd rather not take out a loan). It would be nice if it were compactable too. My current shell is so bulky that when it's in my pack it takes up way too much space. Has anyone had any luck with any of the MEC shells?
  23. Did you and your friend figure out how to make the thing revert to "steady" light? The disco option might come in handy, I suppose, if I could control it. Come to think of it, I'm not sure if we did. I'll be seeing her soon and will ask.
