At least under Clinton, the science was getting done and we were free to debate it's meaning and implications, the problem is that the right refuses to fund the science, thereore whenever a debate occurs, they can throw up their hands and say 'well, we just don't have enough good science in order to make a sound decision'. at least if we had the good science that bush touts, we could argue about what to do with it.

wise point fairweather, but i also work with people from the national labs and from the national center from atmospheric research and i can say that i hear a lot about how research programs get starved out because they aren't politcally palatable. it's also very rare for scientists to inject their own political viewpoints into their science, at least from the last 20 years i've been one (and i work in the earth sciences). from my observations, the current administration will say things like 'we want to base our decisions on the best science available' and then refuse to fund the science that would allow them to make a scientifically based choice resulting choices based on ideology instead..... now, the question is, do you agree that systematic manipulation of the US science community is a lot worse than one loon with a lynx?

i find it rather telling that the govt is always pushing to have appliance makers increase efficiencies (e.g. refridgerators, air conditioners, heaters) and yet we can't seem to get those darn auto makers to increase fuel efficiencies when we know they can. then again, everyone wants an efficient fridge but an inefficient car...go figure.
