The Deptford Trilogy by Robertson Davies.

yeah, lucky he wasn't executed for a crime he didn't commit.

i think the phrase you are looking for is 'taking the piss out of someone'. please note 'winky' thingy in above post denoting sly humor. i've climbed with Squid and am just poking fun. don't be all serious and shit. unless you, too, are being sarcastic, in that case you need to work on your winky thingy skills and i could work on being less dense. ;-)
-
She's only saying what we can all plainly see but are too afraid to talk about. Is it just me or are most of Squid's posts like that? ;-)

I'd be curious to know how well that's working out for you. In my experience, even being polite, people, in general, will ignore you and do what they damn well please or tell you to F**k off and then do as they damn well please. Haven't had someone try to assault me yet though.

i feel for the kids parents but i had been climbing down there for a couple of years before this accident and even then there were signs and warnings up saying 'glacier point is known to be extremely unstable, climbing there is extremely risky, danger of rockfall is high, etc etc'. i never climbed there because of that. one thing i learned in climbing was pay attention to what the locals have to say....

[with one bug eye] "Stay on the road! Stay off the moors!"

No wonder he's an angry dude, before he bravely emigrated, he converted all his zlotys to the other crappiest currency in Europe...

man, haven't you people heard of 'do unto others.....'??? all of you can probably afford to buy your own gear unless you're one of those unemployed dirtbag climbers. if the guy was a friend of yours you'd probably give it back wouldn't you? so why the big disconnect if it's someone you don't know? you're not a bunch of fucking pirates, even though you like to pretend to be.

archenemy, the other day i was just bored and frustrated at work and was feeling like causing trouble. ;-)

rousseau's "Social Contract" is all well can good in theory, as far as theory goes, but I very much doubt much would have come of it if French and American revolutions had not occurred. i very much doubt the nobility, except maybe a few, were going to grant sweeping rights to the peasants. thus, the rights we call 'inalienable' were acquired. and such things obviously change with time as a society becomes more affluent. two hundred years ago, i reckon a fair number of people would have had a good laugh at you if you said 'all people have an inalienable right to the best health care possible'. even today, a fair number of people, at least here, scoff at the idea.
-
So shut up about it already.

i wonder how long he waited before he decided to 'have that thing looked at'?

wouldn't be the first time

nothing personal, minx. i'm just having fun with spray today whilst work is slow.

that's true. however, my parents didn't keep us on a leash in the front yard and sent us off hiking by ourselves in the Alaskan wilderness. i know they worried about us, but they also didn't want us to grow up sitting around the house. people worry about pedophiles abducting kids and such but, statisically, child abductions most often occur by someone the child knows (usually a divorced parent). at least, those are the statistics i've seen....
-
well, don't read too much into it. i'm not some raving right wing loonie. i just theorized what might have happened to the rights we take for granted if we did not have the means to acquire and defend them. certainly, i agree we NOW have the concept of 'inalienable rights of man' but it wasn't always that way. i doubt very much that the chinese or the north koreans power elite agree much with the idea.

Saranwrap and duct tape. Can also be used as a contraceptive.

while i don't think Israel has always done the intelligent thing (which country has?), kicking Egypt's ass when they'd amassed a big army on their borders and were beginning preparations to invade is one of them. while we might wish it to be otherwise, inalienable rights are often only those which you have the means to acquire and defend.

now, that's just pathetic. what? you get to insult males all you want but I can't besmirch the supposed 'sanctity' of women/mothers at all? grow up.
-
what? somehow mothers are immune from being scared sheep? wake up girlie. look who's driving all the SUV's. who seems to think it's necessary to know where their kids are every second of the day? my mom's fine thanks. touch a nerve did we? a little self-reflection is a wonderful thing.

they're probably selling prozac to keep you from wanting to kill yourself after you realize you've wasted both time and money listening to Coldplay
