Crap, I saw a really funny one about her today and now I can't find it.

I'm more down with internet message board entitlement to pass judgement on everyone than anything else. At least you're New School. Old School is posting your pathetic rants in your home-town newspaper.

Maybe he could be a rock star? Xz7_3n7xyDg

Whenever I ran into this sense of entitlement back on the East Coast, my comment was usually, "Well, good thing you didn't step on a land mine today or get shot by a sniper for being from the wrong ethnic group." Oddly, they never seem to completely appreciate my trying to help.

Apparently not having mom and dad around to pay the bills and boost his precious self esteem isn't working out so well. Having worked on Alaska's North Slope to pay for college (doing whatever shit job no one else who got paid more wanted to do), I have to say "Who doesn't go to Coldfoot not knowing what it's like?" Wouldn't anyone with a healthy curiosity and any kind of investigatory skills bother to find out? What kind of job did he expect to be 'waiting' for him when he got out? College professor? Head of some NGO? Sorry, those jobs are taken by older people with more skills. Did he expect someone to pay off his loans like someone bought him a new car for graduating high school (a trend I abhor, as if graduating high school is a difficult task)? I'd like to introduce him to any number of PhDs who have successful careers not doing what they were 'trained' to do (in a way, it's harder for them to redefine themselves and get work since employers tend to view them as too specialized or over qualified).

I'll help him: Here's my patented #9 Boot to the Ass.

I'm surprised no one has made a spoof of Gore saying "Milankovitch Milankovitch? Milankovitch Milankovitch!!!!"

Mountain Loop Road Reopens Darrington, Granite Falls and Arlington Welcome Outdoor Tourists October 23 , 2007 After a four-year effort to repair more than $10 million in damaged roads and bridges, Mountain Loop Scenic Highway reopens October 26 to give outdoor enthusiasts access to many of their favorite trails and roads on Darrington Ranger District of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. The Mountain Loop Scenic Highway follows the South Fork Stillaguamish River over Barlow Pass and into the South Fork Sauk River drainage. It will re-connect the towns of Darrington and Granite Falls. Arlington also hopes to benefit from the opening as people take scenic drives using highways 9, 530, and the Mountain Loop Scenic Highway. The 2003 flood damaged more than 40 roads, closing many of them, and restricting public access to popular spots. Many popular trails were also damaged and closed. The repairs were extensive, requiring engineers to realign sections of the roadway from the South Fork Sauk River away from the Sauk River and upgrade culverts. Although officials expected the work to be finished in June, weather and technical difficulties delayed the contractor until this fall. Snow usually closes the road from November until late spring. linky

Of course we're not rational actors. Look at the shit we buy and vote for and the fact that we don't save for the future.

I feel cheated that geeks are now considered to be sexy.

i may get some билий гриб (white mushrooms) this weekend... going on a hike with some countrymen... but it's always a scary thing - a leap of faith to trust those guys to differentiate a delicacy from poison. fuck, ANOTHER RISKY BEHAVIOR! watch out for that shit, man. the eastern Euros in northern CA were always dying from some mushrooms that they'd 'identified' as being the same as what they ate back home, except the ones we have here cause your liver to die a horrible painful death.

I noticed there's no distinction there between being (a) part of an advanced space-faring civilization and (b) being part of the food supply of an advanced space-faring civilization.

	No cell phones!?! OMFG! LOL!

Just do what they did for smokers. For smokers, they showed what smoking did to lungs. Just show what obesity can lead to in the same stark medical terms.

It's an odd hobby to have, but, yes.

Some scientists, being human beings and citizens, will go out on a limb and suggest policy changes. We certainly free to accept or reject them. That said, if you've read the IPCC science sections and talked to the the authors and editors, you'll know that they go to great, sometimes ridiculous, lengths to avoid anything that even looks like a policy suggestion. They are incredibly aware about how much scrutiny they are under.

This is where I have a problem listening to the conservative voices. Most of them have chosen to attack the science, which, if you were knee deep in it is hard to refute. I've argued with several conservatives acquaintances that they'd be much better positioned to basically accept the scientific consensus and place more of their efforts in controlling policy. I think a lot of people would be happier about that than watching their futile attempts at plugging the leaking dike with fingers and toes. It would also be a more intelligent strategic move. I, for one, would welcome more reasoned conservative voices in the discussion if for no other reason than to provide balance.

One thing I'd like to see in this entire 'discussion' is a separation of the science versus policy. There are a lot of valid questions and concerns about what, if anything, we can/should do about warming trends. However, I'm really tired of listening to the diatribes of amateur scientists on teh intertubes who clearly didn't pass high school science class but now see themselves as well-informed scientific critics.

Make yourself a propane cannon. Start launching grapefruits at the golf course parking lot.
