Three direct pitches (5.6, 5.7, 5.8) up the apron slightly right of center now reach the Proxima Wall and start of the true Melodies route. Makes for a nice warm up to the real business. Danny and I put this together a couple weeks ago- Enjoy M. Hanna

I was there on June 14 I think. We were going to climb Revolver but there were still a few wet patches up high. Zoinks! On a somewhat related note, I noticed some fresh scars on Exfoliation Dome's west slabs and buttress. Right of the first pitch of Westward Ho there is a bushy overlap that is missing a thick block (~3 feet thick), now all over the gully at the base, but mostly stable. The rockfall over at Blueberry route at about pitch 3 appears to have extended itself several more feet down. It was a very concentrated rain period in March, maybe this accelerates the process. It does occur to me that it's all going back to the sea. Sometimes at a fairly rapid clip....

I recall Green Gables quite well and started going up there in the late 80's. As a blossoming climber focused on the Central Cascades it was a great place to get some history and fuel up. Biscuits and gravy in the morning and kielbasas on the way out have possibly contributed to my current svelte figure. I purchased and still have many maps and even a nice historical framed photo of Big 4 with the lodge and rail service. Big 4 has always captured my attention. Its very likely that I met your mom if she worked there at that time. Probably some punk ass kid (Mr Tyson) there too though I may be projecting... Always a friendly place with a funky never working gas pump and cold ice cream bars off to the side. Good memories MH

Hi all- We saw many choppers in the air all of the sudden, didn't realize what had happened. Power, phone and internet all went out. I looked out at the Stilly which is only about 300 feet away from our home, and the river had dropped to the lowest condition I have ever seen in an hour long period. I figured something like this happened, so we got out with the fam and pets in about 5 minutes. It just seemed really surreal. I'm really sorry for all the affected community, there are only 320 or so residents in Oso proper, so everyone has a stake or close friend impacted.The toll on the responders was quite evident as we drove through to get a few things from the house yesterday. They have performed quite a difficult and painful task and continue to do so at considerable risk. Thanks all for the good wishes- Mark Hanna

Excellent TR- This is a great place. A buddy and I climbed the 2 left falls about 10 years ago, but your conditions look way nicer. I recall we rapped off some blueberry bushes and a snow bollard. Thanks for the report MH

Interesting to note that no ice hooks passed (0 of 3). I use them, but only in turf or iced up thin cracks more like a pin. I have never even considered using them as ice pro. Spooky. Great paper. Thanks for posting MH

Trip: Wheeler Mountain, Snohomish Co - Wheeler Dealer WI2+/3, Grade I Date: 12/8/2013 Trip Report: Nice cold spell we have had. Since living near Oso for a few years, I have become aware of the many steep creek beds that exist on Wheeler Mountain just behind our property. At 3570 feet, it’s not tall, but does have some fairly steep ravines and never sees 1 minute of daily sun on the cold north face. We also get a cold outflow of cooled air from the Boulder River Wilderness, Bullen Mtn, 3 Fingers, Whitehorse, and the like. In 2011, a large landslide was triggered up high, and even diverted our creek and left us flooded in the driveway for a couple months http://washingtondnr.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/large-landslide-across-dnr-managed-trust-land-in-snohomish-county-no-residences-or-private-property-were-involved/ So I hopped in the car with the dogs and took a look at the possibilities given the cold temps of the last week. Danny C came up on Sunday morning, and we took off up the thing. Good times, lots of WI2 with a couple 3 steps thrown in. Overall we climbed about 900 feet in the narrow creek bed. We could have gone further, but the angle decreased beyond. The descent was through a steep forested rib between landslide forks, steep enough to require a ½ rope rap. The landslide really made this possible, as the insulative trees and brush are clear in a 100 foot wide swath top to bottom. Cold, clear, and open to the sky. We call it Wheeler Dealer. A brief glimpse of the route may be had on Hwy 530 about ½ mile past the eastern Oso Loop Road junction. Really cool to climb a long easy ice line 10 minutes from my backyard. Thanks Danny! As Jon has noted, here is a new route first begun many years ago by Chris Greyell and myself, and finally finished a couple months ago. This spring I was called back to take another look at the line, and finished it ground up complete with a bit of moss here and there . This is a fun route with approximately 450 feet of climbing, much of it being very moderate hueco hauls, which allowed ground up stance drilling quite well. The crux pitch (P3)is some manner of 5.10 and features cool thin crimps and a really nice variable sized crack behind a dihedral in a great position. Looking to the east, some great photos of climbers on Tracks would be possible. Like many of the climbs here, the extended road closure has lessened visitation. I would encourage you to bring a brush and adopt a climb if so inclined. The features are entirely worth it. To get there, follow the trail past the Spring, about 200 feet to the east of Tracks start. Head up a steep path to the right, to be deposited on a rosy pedestal. A fixed belay pin marks the start. Love that last shot, the peak in the foreground is Wolf Peak, Howling Ridge is the left skyline in the sun. Amazing photo of that! An excellent under appreciated 5.8 route as well. MH
