Hiked to the top of the Wallowas with my skis to find way too little snow. Made a few turns anyway. Slept in an alpine basin next to a pika. That was nice. Woke up to find I had also been sleeping nearby to a dead bighorn sheep that a cougar had been eating.

Ditto. As Cobert said, bears are godless killing machines.

[TR] Twin Peaks (Wallowas) - south ridge 5/26/2007
mtn_mouse replied to Jamin's topic in Oregon Cascades
What he meant was that Twin peaks has no walk-up route, while most of the others, including the Matterhorn, have dog routes that just about anyone can hike up. They also have very difficult routes as you mentioned. I have hiked up to Twin peaks several times for conditioning. I only climbed it once by myself, and as Jamin did, I took my chances. I also used a sling and rope to descend from the top, and was able to flip the rope to retrieve the sling. His account of the summit block is fairly accurate. It is not a long pitch at all, but extremely rotten, and exposed, especially on the W, lake Francis side. What has stopped me from soloing it is that if I fall off I would lay there for months before someone else visited the area. Even a minor injury would be fatal. So it is definitaly far better to climb it with a partner. As far as the 40-45 degree snow approach, sorry, more like 25 to 30 degree walk up. Jamin, I appreciate your energy, but really you should take someone with you next time. -
Well that is what I thought too. However I found out the firearms used in this murder were a fully automatic AK-47 bought legally from a firearms dealer in Harvard Idaho, with an approved class 3 firearms license, and the second gun was an M-1 semi-automatic. An automatic firearm is one that will continue to shoot rounds as long as the trigger is pulled. A semi-auto firearm will only shoot one round with each pull. So this was an automatic, and contridicts what you said above. Talking with a gun expert, he said that full autos are still able to be bought with the proper permits. This in my mind should stop.

Thanks for the comments, but I still have to go to a funeral today. Don't get me wrong, I believe in gun ownership of shotguns and hunting rifles. But I am opposed to any ownership of automatic weapons, and assault weapons even if semi-auto. Also opposed to handguns. Maybe it;s just my Canadian roots.

OK, I must present the other side of sheep stouts gun nutiness. I live very close to Moscow ID, in and out of there all the time and know lots of people there. Basically it is a great town, but it is still Idaho, a major stigma it can not shake. This weeks shooting there shook up a lot of people. I knew Newbill who was killed, through working with him on the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery II events the last few years. He was a member of the Hog Heaven Muzzleloaders, and reinacted the 1805 expedition and a good guy. He died from shots from a fully automatic AK-47. Doesn't it seem odd that the NRA and most Idahoans feel that any gun restrictions at all are unbearable to them. Face it dumb shits, not everyone can be trusted with guns. And automatic weapons, assault weapons, etc have no place in civilization. Being half Canadian, I was raised with a different attitude towards guns, and have never understood the love affair with weapons that the US has. Get over it folks, some gun control is necessary in this country. We can never get the gun nuts to see the light, but many of you do vote, and vote you should.

TRUE ENOUGH MUFFY. I GUESS TOM DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO SAY THOSE WORDS. SOME PEOPLE ARE INCAPABLE OF IT. So was this not enough for you? Looks like Tom is more of a man than you two. Plz refer back to Muffy's statement.

Pussy, me? ...The North Face of Shuksan is a Day Trip, chubby. Before you go callin' folks pussies, pea brains, cockroaches, and rabid dogs, you should make sure you can look after yourself properly if you ever happen to "run into" one of them up there. And I can guarantee you that taking three days (!) to hump up NF Shuksan does not qualify you to be talking that degree of shit. Now run along you fat fuck. Are all Right-Wingers this Hysterical???

I just got back from skiing the muir snowfield the last three days. Bring skis or snowshoes. Of course the conditions change daily and you might not need them, but everyone climbing the snowfield this week either had snowshoes or skis. There is not a good established boot track starting at Paradise, just a random snowshoe trail and ski tracks. After 11 am things really warmed up and those without snowshoes quickly went back for them. Snow was postholey. Very hot, bring shade, beer, t shirt, and sun screen. Early in the day this morning I was able to walk on a hard snow crust but it soon thawed out. Also, just about every route on the south side had wet snow slides, very messy.

Don't worry, the mtn mouse is in no trouble. The lowly pika is a member of the faint hearted Lagomorpha Order, not the super order of rodentia, and its future is uncertain. Not so the mouse, we will be here forever, and if all of you had stayed in school instead of out plinking rodents, you would have known.

White Water Summer (1987) I've seen it a couple times too, and it is kind of entertaining. Filmed around Mt. Jefferson area I think.

Great to meet you Kurt. Your efforts at granite are really appreciated--it's a great training area. Like I said, I haven't been there for three years, the climbers I used to go with are so old their walkers get in the way of their belaying. Maybe I need to meet up with Chaps! I will make an effort to climb there more often. Nice to meet the other folks too, a couple of them looked like spiders on the wall. Thanks, sean

I have pulled ticks off before, just couln't this time, and never before saw a doctor. I probably should have just ripped it out. I forgot about Deet working so well, will add that next trip. Pindude, I am not that Wimpy, and to prove it I had dry toast without butter this morning, then went outside and stuck my finger in a snake hole.
