Pictures are a nice idea. Good ones Ivan! Thanks for sharing those, looks like you had a great year. Perhaps one of my more memorable ascents this year that had decent pictures was named "The Salathe Highway" on The Old Witch at Cathedral Formation. A formerly unclimbed pinnacle I free climbed, ground up with natural gear, solo. I posted a trip report earlier about this whole long drawn out exercise so I won't re-do it here. Short version, dropped into the saddle by the main wall and this route was the top of the pinnacle, not all the way from the ground, as represented by the big black dots in the top pic. Here's some pics. Front shot overview: The Old Witch closeup front view of the top: Start of Salethe Highway. The bolts are also the rap anchor. Why it's called "The Old Witch". On top: Putting on a sling to rap off of. Sorry if I took up to much bandwidth, I can delete some if needed.

The thing is, Fairweather, that if you buy a bag off the guy at the street corner and get caught you get a fine and maybe a bit of time if it's not your first time, while if you get caught growing it in your basement the authorities will steal your house. So with that in mind, whats your recommendation now? oh, just reread it and saw that Ivan and you already covered this very ground and we're all in somewhat of an agreement. Some of you guys should lighten up on the personal stuff though. __________________________________________________________ Yeah and now it will really go down hill cause I showed up -LOL.

Looks like the administration may be preparing to hold to their promise of closing Gitmo. As far as everyone wanting to close it, arguing for due process isn't necessarily arguing for closure. When was that election anyway...seems like it's been a long time. Frankly, I think Jaybs earlier post where he brought the comparison of Unmanned aircraft bombings vs capturing and locking them up was spot on and worthy of deeper reflection. It appears that although folks in the US and the world can rally around closing this detention facility, no one seems too upset when we blow 20-30 folks, fait acompli and with no trial or due process, just sitting in a village on the other side of the world all to hell. So in response, the military appears to be utilizing that tactic much more frequently. There is no risk to US soldiers and no one on this side of the world seems to care or be disturbed at all if a few innocents get whacked here or there. Strange but true. _____________________________________________________________ http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091220/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_guantanamo_transfers "WASHINGTON – The U.S. has transferred a dozen Guantanamo detainees to Afghanistan, Yemen and the Somaliland region as the Obama administration continues to move captives out of the Cuban facility in preparation for its closure. The Justice Department said Sunday that a government task force had reviewed each case. Officials considered the potential threat and the government's likelihood of success in court challenges to the detentions. Over the weekend, four Afghan detainees were transferred to their home country. Two Somali detainees were transferred to authorities in Somaliland, the semi-autonomous northern region of Somalia. Six Yemeni detainees also were sent home. The Justice Department said that since 2002, more than 560 detainees have departed the military prison in Cuba and 198 remain. The Justice Department identified those sent home as: _Afghans Abdul Hafiz, Sharifullah, Mohamed Rahim and Mohammed Hashim. _Somali detainees Mohammed Soliman Barre and Ismael Arale. Yemenis Jamal Muhammad Alawi Mari, Farouq Ali Ahmed, Ayman Saeed Abdullah Batarfi, Muhammaed Yasir Ahmed Taher, Fayad Yahya Ahmed al Rami and Riyad Atiq Ali Abdu al Haf. The administration has announced that five detainees will be tried in a New York federal court and more are likely to be tried in this country. Up to 100 detainees will be sent to a nearly empty prison in Thomson, Ill. In Rome, state-run and private television stations said a third Tunisian detainee from Guantanamo Bay is being moved to Italy to face international terrorism charges for having allegedly recruited fighters for Afghanistan. Private TG5 identified the man as 40-year-old Moez Ben Abdelkader Fezzani, also known as Abou Nassim, and said he was expected to land Sunday night at Milan's Malpensa airport. A prosecutor confirmed Fezzani's name on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. President Barack Obama says he won't set a new deadline for closing the Guantanamo Bay military prison, but does expect the facility to shut down sometime next year. The administration has abandoned the January 2010 deadline Obama set for closure soon after taking office. Obama has said he realized that things move more slowly in Washington than he expected."

Well, instead of posting my usual reply to Raindawg and linking a photo to the lil Dawg, seen here below - ....instead of sinking there, I'll post this for the gear whore climbers in your life. Good stuff: A hex belt from Black Diamond.

Here Here!!!!!!!!!! On a serious note: I totally agree with that Allen: however, I've been an unpaid SAR and loved it despite some of the usual issues. I totally think that unpaid pros like Portland Mt Rescue should get free rein and full involvement as well.

Whoh ! Even so, thats not as bad as stuffing a dog doo snow cone in his eye....Jus' sayin' ________________________________________________________________-- BTW, I'm issuing a "Climbers Fatwa" and advisory right now that no one can go climbing this weekend in the Pac NW due to marginal weather. I may get out myself, however, but it is only to check on the conditions for the rest of you.....so you slackers stay home and catch the ball game on the tube. Take a break, it's dangerous out there. ps, I may be holed up in a snow cave behind Illumination saddle with Ivans Seal up there and a large bottle of Bernheim Bourbon. Please, don't come looking for at least a week. I'm not making light of any accident's here. I think that's damn sad and unfortunate. I'm only talking about this weekend so don't read anything into it and don't start all insulting the seal or nothin'.

Jesus JB - lighten up. We see all kinds of craziness out there...I mean - look at this shit stuff. Kind of rude, but why even respond. I'm not making that up either. ps, thats a BB gun there dudes!

OK, no screwing around, lets put some gift ideas down for climbers and their loved ones that are not actual gear:-). For climbers to buy their wives (if they read romance): http://www.amazon.com/Rescued-Magic-Christmas-Harlequin-Romance/dp/0373175493/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1261195260&sr=1-1 Very timely as Hood has claimed another couple of folks loved ones recently. "Carly Bishop hasn't celebrated Christmas for six years—not since icy Mount Hood claimed her fiancé's life and left her a widow before she was a bride. But this year, handsome Jake Porter is determined she'll enjoy herself. Jake is a mountain rescuer, big-hearted and courageous, but Carly is too scared of loving him in case she loses him. In a whirl of festive fun, sleigh rides and snowball fights, Christmas starts to weave its magic. Though it's Jake who is melting Carly's heart." Written by CC.com's own Rmcwrter

Is there anything which you need? Cause you rule!!!! Wow! Holy crap you just made somebody happy when they get their stuff back..... -
Thanks for those Greg! Tyler, plan on it, this summer. Geoff, I have a pic of cock rock here someplace, I heard they changed the name in 1959 as it wasn't PC, but as you can see, it doesn't look like a "Rooster" Rock, as much as a "Cock" Rock from the view the pioneers saw in the 1800s. ...hmmm, can't find that shot....so heres some unclimbed pinnacles instead. The downhill length of the top one must be close to 300'. Did someone say Granite? Did someone say more Granite? I am posting these secrets to up the stokage and to be a tease and mostly cause I've been drinkin' again......the point is that there's lots of stuff way out in the woods not far from town, especially in Skamanina county just go look for it.

Trying to plan out a sortie this weekend and I'm getting hosed from the best free topo site on the net. The topo function is sporadically not working then it is. Mostly NOT. http://mapper.acme.com/ Did they run into some litigation for copying the free USFS topos or did one of you guys do something bad? WTF? Am I gonna have too start paying for this stuff.....

You'll go far in the Black Canyon......substitute the word hiking for rapping.

I wonder what that there really means? "systematically practices McCarthyism" Is he blacklisting again? Wiki says "Today the term is used more generally to describe demagogic, reckless, and unsubstantiated accusations, as well as public attacks on the character or patriotism of political opponents"...I don't see that from PP. Our country survived FDR, and many consider him a great, if not one of the greatest, President: in retrospect. We will survive this as well, perhaps even thrive. Although it makes you wonder what Obamas poll numbers at end of term one and-or two, if he does get re-elected.

I believe that is not true for many many people.
