  1. Somtimes the chain is a single piece that connects the two bolts (or is two pieces joined by a quicklink or something, same difference)... That was the situation in the fatality that you describe. The rope was simply looped over the chain, not threaded through any links. In that situation, if any part of the system fails, then :splat: More commonly in my experience is to find two bolts each with a length of chain attached. The rope goes through the bottom link of each piece, as described by Cpoly above.
  2. Well, I've done a couple of those routes, and they were both great adventures. Looking at lists like this always makes me feel like I need to get out more though. Not that that's a bad thing...
  3. In the Cirque?
  4. One of my favourite packs, that I often use for ski touring, is a frameless pack; the Serratus Genie. It takes a little more effort to pack it well, but other than that, as long as the weight is reasonable, I have no real problem with the frameless idea, up to a certain size/weight.
  5. from the thread: maybe that would work for those damn gear thieves in Squish too.

  12. That's what the chains are for.. Some people will also lower off them (not toprope) and some people will say that is wrong because of the wear it causes to the chains.

  15. Or it could simply be that they are not profitable to make... That was the case with the local manufacturer. He decided that there was simply too much labour, and too many rejects too continue making them. BTW, the head of that company is also a technical rigger, so I bet he knows more than you or I about safe loads, shock loads, blah, blah, blah... and he never had a problem making them until he decided he wasn't making $$$ from them.
