  1. There is a tape that might work for you, but it's not cheap. It is used, among other things, for putting a water tight wrap over electrical connections. You wrap it on tight, and it actually bonds to itself, and becomes kinda one piece. I can't remember the name of it, but most hardware and auto part stores seem to have it. $10/roll or so! Tool dip might work too.
  2. As usual I geek out, and Beck comes along to put it all in layman's terms. Nice job, you said it better than I could (obviously).
  3. Just talked to a proffesional ski guide friend of mine who had a chance to try out the X-1 recently in training week. He pretty much said what Avman did on the tttips.com board. I wish I could try one of these things out for myself.
  4. And while we're at it, How's the warranty??? When push comes to shove, sometimes the brands do come out cheaper in the long run. Me on my second jacket from the dead bird. Suddenly it don't seem so spendy!
  5. Well, here is an answer from the Backcountry Access website. Some good reading over there! This is copied from this article :
  6. Somewhere on the I-5 in WA: "Boring Pedestrian Overpass" Uhh hold on, that's not in BC. Sometimes it's not the official names that are the best. I like the ones people come up with on their own. dru lives in "the 'wack" I am in RossVegas Vangroovey=Vancouver Lilliwet=Lilooet (Straight outta)Squampton=Squamish Ditchmond=Richmond (you'd understand if you go there)
  7. Do you turn them inside out in the washer?? It helps. (RTFM) Hot tip: don't lend your favourite ski socks out to someone who is going to break their tib/fib, it will get cut off by the EMT's!! Smartwool aint the only socks in my drawer. I got some of those ones trask reccomends, but find those kinda sweaty. There's some other ones too, $7 at MEC, tough as nails, not too cushy. I try to wear them out by wearing them to work, but they won't die. SW always is the one I want to wear though.
  8. Three people sell their souls to the devil. The deal states that they will get what they are wishing for and then they will be killed. When they have had their wishes the devil comes to collect. He say to each of them, "I am going to take your lives the way you lived them. Each of you will be killed in a way that reflects the job you did" The first one says, "OK I was a climber, what are you going to do to me?" The devil has him hung with rope. The second one was a blacksmith. "Maxwell's silver hammer came down upon his head..." The third one got a big grin on his face as he said "I make lollipops..."
  9. Not quite sure what you mean??? If your boots shells are the right size, then you will have enough toe room once the liners are fitted. Shell Sizing: With no sock or liner step into the empty shell of your existence, I mean boot. Slide you toes right forward, untill they lightly touch the front of the shell. Some people recommend you have a footbed under your foot for this part. Ideally you will have about 2 fingers worth of space behind your heel. Is this what you meant???

    MMMM Yummy!

  11. Hee Hee, my backyard these days (almost). Probably got some snow on it these days though. Looks like the North Pole is made of Gneiss.

    Canada Rules!

Did ya know: Some guy just got refugee status from your country in ours. He has some condition for which medical pot is helpful, and he wanted to move here to be free to grow it without harrassment. Jean Chretien, our pm, has promised a bill in the spring that will decriminalize personal possesion (up to 1 oz is the number being thrown around). He is an outgoing pm who never had much time for Clinton or Bush, so it might just happen.

    Crystal Mountain

I can get about the same vert in an hour on the hill than you'll get all day in the b/c. Especially if you are breaking trail. That said I love the b/c too! It is the soul of the sport.
  14. $385/2 does not equal $295
  15. Great points mattp. I would guess you are probably right on about the beacon'ed travellers being with people who new how to rescue them. But that is part of the point isn't it? I would guess that the hand or piece of clothing wasn't an issue though, as the article is about transceiver effectiveness, and concludes that transceivers are effective. I don't think they make you safer in any way. It just seems that they might improve your chances if you should f%#$ up.
  16. If you have boots that fit... Smartwool Light hikers in the summer, Ski ultra light for, well, skiing, and Ex - weight for ice and stuff. No liners needed. Plushest socks I've used.
  17. My tradition of first tracks at Black Tusk on Halloween, was certainly disrupted this year. We ended up going a whole momth late, and the snow sucked then too.
  18. They are all wrong. It is the brew pub at the Howe Sound Inn & Brewing Company (HSBC)
  19. I thought we need a new smilie for freshiez, since it seems to be snowing here in BC finally! How about: :J (it's a snorkel eh!)
  20. I'm glad no offence. I was worried you would take some of my post the wrong way. Except it's snoboy not "snow boy" The B-vox could be confusing while you are setting it up, if you weren't familiar with beacons in general, or weren't prone to RTFM. In practice it seems to me that the factory settings work very well, as it comes out of the box. If you need to change settings, then you probably know why and what you are doing. If you don't, maybe b/c skiing isn't your thing. I mean an F1 has transmit/recieve, as well as 5 volume settings, which could be considered options, no? They certainly can be confusing on bad days. X-1 has twice the range of what?? And Avman over on tttips.com didn't seem to think it was anywhere near the published range. I would love to actually try out an X-1. I like my old F-1, and continue to use it also but I think the B-vox is an improvement over it. That's why I bought one.
  21. "or very nearly so" = not completely buried This isn't specific to the PNW (ie terrible ted's ?), but applicable to the whole question I think. brief article on survival rates comparing with and without beacons So, the numbers say about 2-1/2 times better chance of living? Sounds worth it to me. Still bad odds though
  22. And if he's a guy like me, he would also love a subscription to "Cook's" magazine. Awesome detailed recipes, for good, basic and fancy dishes. No ads! Unless they are taking graft for the reviews of stuff! Yummy!

    seasons greetings

    yup
  24. [edit] Beck said,"the Barryvox and The Tracker are digital beacons but are very easy for an inexperienced user to use", but now he says,"I think the Barryvox would be EXTREMELY confusing while in the adrenaline of a real live accident" [/edit] I don't know how many times this has to be said, but: "The Barryvox does not need to be confusing. The options are set up ahead of time. The only options available in search mode are analog or digital." As for the X-1, I think this is pretty damning: From the www.telemarktips.com Avy Safety forum (bold mine): There are other impressions in the same thread but this one seemed pretty well thought out.
