  3. tlg - no contest.
  4. Jake - consumer GPS use 4 if they can, 3 is not as good. The "dumbing down" or Selective Availibility was turned off. You are mostly right. cracked - I think that they use better receivers, they probably don't have any mountains blocking sattelites and they probably do a couple of tricks to improve accuracy. One could be averaging, basically taking many fixes, and averaging them. They might also use Differential GPS. This basically consists of a very accurately surveyed point with a receiver that records the difference between where it is (the surveyed position) and where the GPS thinks it is. This can then be aplied to the data from the unknown point, either in real time, or post. These are my guesses. Most importantly, I don't know if either of these tecniques would have a benefit on the quality of an altitude fix. I think there is someone (iain?) on this board who knows a fair amount about GPS, and can probably tell you much better... I thought it was funny a few years ago when I read in a trip report that the group had found the map to be in error, because the GPS showed the height to be a few feet diferrent!
  5. I kinda left the guy alone. I thought he had learnt his lesson, and decided to eat a little pie. Now I see he has learnt something... Quote : "the Selkirks are not in the Canadian Rockies, but both ranges are within the Rocky Mountains." WTF? Go check the thread out, it's actually kind of interesting. (Link in my first post.)

  8. Unless you can stop the weather from changing, you are always gonna have to reset your altimeter! I find the one in my eTrex summit good. I was on a car once. playing with a fancy aneroid Thommen one. The needle jumped about 5 feet when you opened the window! Pretty sensitive. I still use my altimeter between known points. I will assume you are joking?

    Dogs?

I am getting the feeling that the dog owners on the board are a litlle more responsible than the average ones you meet out on the trail...

  19. I've got this little flame going on over at www.telemarktips.com , in the 11th page of the "SME Time Bomb?" thread. I say the western border of the Canadian Rockies is the Rocky Mountain Trench, and this loser from Utah(?) is trying to tell me that no it isn't; that the Selkirks are part of the Rockies too. I am right or not? Come on geo 's... You can sign up instantly over there by the way...

    Dogs?

Dog like that you should kick in the teeth. On no wait, the owner is responsible, then we should kick him in the teeth. I seriously doubt your dog is anything like that though. Here's a story of bad owners. Someone I know was at the crag one day. There was a dog tied up there right next to the base. It bit my friend. Owner turns around and says, "Oh, he does that sometimes." F#$%ing doofus! Dogs don't bite people, people bite people!
