http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com/ A refreshing view of the occupation from the perspective of a 'girl at ground zero -- Baghdad". 36 American troops captured in Falujah? you heard the rumor here first.

Yes, but the crowd of poor villagers wearing tye-dyed mumus and waiting outside your igloo to catch your Psilocyn laden urine would be a dead give-away....way too easy to spot from the air.

Would you prefer to live in Boise or Salt Lake?
Thinker replied to Thinker's topic in Climber's Board
I'm aware of Sandy's notorious distinction and that's why I plan to commute. The SLC airport is only about 25 minutes away from the office I'd be working in, so I figure anything south of downtown SLC will be about the same driving time. -

This is getting a little more serious and it looks like I'll probably be shipping out to SLC. Where are the little islands of liberalism and diversity in SLC? (are there such things?) Where should one consider living that's within a 20 to 30 minute commute of Sandy, UT? -
I dug around and found a couple old photos of Blackfoot Canyon.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/act/46469994.html Date: 2004-10-22, 2:16PM PDT Need a climbing partner for Seattle. I'm new to the sport and the area. I would like to hook up a consistent climbing partner to develop skills with. Outside or in. Female or male doesn't matter. Mondays or after work, weekdays. Bridgett

Choco hammered Kid Scotty: Reasonable? First of all, the assumption that somehow the posters on this thread (or this board!) are the "climbing community" is a bit laughable and self-aggrandizing at best. Most of who I climb with never visit this site, nor do most of the others that I run into!?!? Secondly Scott, I find it a bit funny how you're acting like a kid who can't quite reach the freezer for a popsicle and throws a tantrum (give him a few more clues for fun's sake Nolse!). And thirdly, relax people. I'm sure all the info will be available in due time (your world won't end in the mean-time). I'm sure at that time, a reasoned conclusion and consensus will be reached. The idea that this is "the" PacNW climbing community is laughable. So a few of the notable local figures hang out here on the fringes...occasionally....big deal. Most of them are embarrased or afraid to post under their real names and realize that getting sucked into this site takes them away from their real objective...climbing. This 'community' is overrun by reactionary, knee-jerk, arm chair quarterbacks who fill these threads with pointless drivel. Sure, it's fun to read sometimes, but calling it 'the' climbing community is really a stretch. spray on...

http://www.yellowstoneteton.org/thingstodo/RockClimbing/index.html http://www.isu.edu/outdoor/climbing/massbeta.htm Idaho Mountain Trading in IDF used to sell climbing gear and guide books, they may still. Ross Park in Pocatello has tons of short routes with a 3 minute approach. Blackfoot Canyon is what I was trying to remember before, nice place. 'The Southeast Idaho Climber's Guide' gives these directions (paraphrased): 25 miles SE of IDF. Go south on Hwy 91 to 1 mile north of Firth. Left on the Goshen Hwy, drive to the end. Right on Mountain View, drive to the end. Left on Wolverine Rd, go 1.5 to 2 miles to the large irrigation pipe running up from the river below. many climbs near the pipe, more another 1/2 mile up the road. 45 to 80 foot pitches, basalt, rattlesnakes. Ririe: a dozen climbs 5.6 to 10b below the visitors overlook at the Ririe Dam. "top roping is most commonly done from the rusted pipe anchors and existing bolt anchors" Get the book, there's more. meet IDF climbers here http://www.idahoalpineclub.org/

I lived (and climbed) there for a short time. There is indeed a guidebook for the area. There's fun cliimbing near Ririe at the reservoir and south of IDF in the Black River Canyon. I have a guidebook you could look at or copy if you want to. I'll be back in Seattle Thurs night. How much experience does your friend have?

Dane, From a strictly objective viewpoint, you come off as a hot-head working on a good mission. I've read your posts and watched this battle from a distance and have only these things to say: --I agree with your objections to the new 'ethics' at Dishman. --I appreciate your efforts to clean up the place and repair some of the damage. --I disagree with your compulsion to RUSH the coalition process along. --I disagree with your inflamatory remarks and jabs at many of those who don't give you their immediate allegiance. As I said, I personally support the cause of maintaining the longstanding tradional ethics at Dishman, but I think that trying to rush the repair process along can only be detrimental in the long run. Consider taking more time to bring all the parties together. It's almost guaranteed that people with such differing views will take months if not years to reach an acceptable solution. A good negotiator will not give up after 1, 2, 5, or even 10 failed attempts at building the consensus you claim to seek. The bolt war you're directly involved in will only hurt the resource you profess to protect. My advice to you, fwiw, is to step back, take a deep breath, squelch your ego, reorder your priorites, and make additional attempts to reach out to those doing the things you object to. By being a little more reasonable and less reactive, you'll also make yourself much less of a target. Imagine the gratification your 'rebolting hero' has gotten from watching this whole subject online.....parts of that certainly could have been avoided. my 2 cents.

I tried to register TWICE using 'convenience' booths...once at Pike Place Market and once at the Drivers License Bureau. Neither one effectively registered me in WA state, and when I called the voter registration office they said my best bet was to send it in myself rather than let the vollunteer staffed booths do it. I finally printed the forms off the internet and mailed them in myself and....VOILA...it worked. I really have to wonder where the personal info I provided to the folks at Pike Place ended up. I wasn't surprised by the failure of my voter registration at the drivers license office...the guy and I had obvious political differences that manifested themselves in our brief conversation. So, in essence, I had to register 3x in WA before i was official.

If you're into this kind of thing, check out Chessler books. Here's the start of a recent email I got from them (the email goes on for several more pages, let me know if you want me to PM you the rest of the text...or just sign up for their mailing list): BOOKS SIGNED BY REINHOLD MESSNER AND PETER HABELER DEAR FRIENDS, This week we went to Europe to complete a four year project, getting all the books of Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler signed by those two immortal climbers. (This was our 7th foreign trip in the last two years to get books autographed!) Reinhold Messner's climbing accomplishments, especially his ascent of all 14 of the 8000 meter peaks have made him the world's greatest climber. What has also become evident is that he is history's greatest mountaineering author, having written over 60 books in 35 years. About twenty titles have been translated into English and all of those are listed below, including several that are quite scarce. Quantities are limited on most titles - we usually have one to ten of each. The only titles of which we have many of are ALL 14 EIGHT THOUSANDERS, and the new edition of BIG WALLS which are signed by Messner and Habeler, and have priced them a little lower. In some cases we have both UK and USA editions and when they are identical, we will ship whichever copy looks better. Order by E-Mail, phone or on our website. Details are at the bottom. E-mail is info@chesslerbooks.com Phone is 800 654-8502 Website is www.chesslerbooks.com Michael Chessler

After Tuff Love I headed off to Tahoe for a job interview and a little climbing. Hooked up with 3 Czech guys in the Lovers Leap campground and swung leads on 6 pitches with Ladya on 2 classic moderate routes, East Crack and Haystack. I can't remember when I've had quite as good a day as this in a couple of years. A forest fire started nearby (10 miles downvalley) on Wednesday and was the talk of the campground that night. We stuck it out as the wind was in our favor. That night we got entirely too drunk on Scotch and some Czech liquor. Met the folks at the next campsite who are fixtures there from the Bay Area...Tad, Dave, and others...good people. Thurs morn we decided to climb as long as the wind was blowing west, towards the fire. We got in one approach pitch to Corrugation Corner when the valley started to fill with smoke with the changing wind. After about 10 minutes of yelling in Czech to the other team a few hundred yards across the wall we bailed and headed for the campground. The Czechs headed of to Yosemite, and I reluctanly headed back to Seattle. Here's a link to info about the fire: http://www.news10.net/storyfull1.asp?id=8288 The Czechs climbed Rainer in late Sept via DC and picked up a solo climber named Julian after his teammates got sick and turned around...was that anyone here? Drove all night and most of today to get home...dog tired, beer good, GW sucks, and I'm gone. Peace out, T

Thinker replied to Thinker's topic in Climber's Board
Expound please. (PM if you think that's more appropriate) I lived in Idaho Falls for a few months and wasn't bothered by it, though my friends with children in school seemed distraught over it. Did you live IN SLC? -

I think I'm heading down this afternoon. I'll be continuing on to Tahoe on Monday if anyone wants to roadtrip and hit Lovers Leap for a day or 2 or 3....look me up. -
A job I'm interviewing for would give me the choice to live in Boise or Salt Lake City. I've only spent minimal time in each one. Give up the pros and cons of them.... To start things off: they look about equidistant from City of Rocks. Boise has the Black Cliffs...what does SLC have that's similar? Sawtooths! vs Wasatch?
