Chinook helicopters have a small hole in the deck for hoisting so the vertical orientation is necessary. It also provides less surface area for the rotor wash to start spinning the package (though tag lines can be used to minimize this on a horizontal litter).

They probably would have made it up just fine if one had not had an accident. And now they seem to be holding up well in the conditions. I don't think you can plan your trip saying, well I bet I could get up and down the mountain, but if I have an accident then the rescue team would have to do this this and this. Seems like over-planning for failure. I personally would like to have a clean forecast for that mountain. Others might be willing to roll the dice a bit.

I keep a sam splint down the spine of my pack with the foam pad. It takes up little space and adds to the pack structure a bit. Yeah you can improvise splints but what they don't tell you in the wfrs is you still need that stuff for its original purpose.

you might want to check White River. There are usually a couple whoppers that open up to the east of the top of the Palmer. Be careful poking around over there this time of year though, things often are not what they seem.
