  3. You need some serious guns to de-skin a split board. If it's cold and your hands are numb feggedaboutit.
  4. You're leading trad at 5.11 these days. Personally I don't find that mediocre.

I recommend the Tracker if you are in the market. People complain about the advertised range. I think range is overrated.
  7. That is also the minimum for many mountain rescue units: 5 min for multiple burial, beacons remain on once found. For a good time try doing this on a powerline clearcut.

I have bought guide books from REI before (or run in to check out a route before hitting the freeway ). I also occasionally get cord and webbing there when I'm in a fix. Other items I've got my eye on in there: 15lb cast iron grilled cheese sandwich maker the "chain" saw giant Toblerone bar any of the 25 different sport sandle models

  12. I think split boarders do well with other split boarders. When you get skiers and split boarders together, it can get a little tedious. Skiers have to wait for the boarder to de-skin and rejoin the board, which usually takes longer than a ski deskin. Then on the downhill, boarders sometimes have to choose a different line than the skier to keep speed. It can be a pain to regroup in low visibility or heavy trees, since the boarder wants to keep speed for the flats, etc. Rolling hills stop boarders dead and it can get very frustrating for them. I have nothing against splitboarding, but it can lead to problems. I really think skis are a better backcountry tool. A split board with edge-to-edge skins, however, is unstoppable on the uphill!

  17. Even if you don't climb any of the routes (11'o'clock C. is excellent) Broken Top's crater bowl is an outrageous ski. There are plenty of slope angles for all abilities on the perimeter of the crater as well. What a blast. Get some sled hauling practice in on the approach too, means you can haul in all the booze to make a good winter ski trip complete. I'll be back for more this winter. If the approach didn't require some nav. skill and commitment it would be mobbed.
  18. little zigzag?
  19. It has been proven time and again that the formula for mainstream comedic success is not the higher-level, cerebral humor such as my own (see two posts up), but rather the more pedestrian, "Con-Air" humor we experience around the 4th of July weekend. If true comedic genius were rewarded in such a manner, the creators of the Black Adder series would be billionaires.
  20. so what you are saying is he was selling "cliff" notes? a hahahahaha!
  21. I just tend to use leashes because losing a ski 2 days into the b.c. sounds terrifying to me.
  22. doesn't the ski patrol keep some skis at meadows for just that reason over by heather canyon? which brings up a time when it is nice to have tele or silvretta 500 style bindings, trying to engage a step-in in deep powder can be a pain the ass. but then again I never crash so I wouldn't know!
  23. I think mike uses the freerides, he was talking about them last season?
  24. on the leashes I'm wishywashy, but I like to have my skis near me when I yard sale on something steeper, rather than climbing the hill to fetch a ski. I feel better on steep stuff when I'm de-skinning and stuff to be attached to the ski when I'm fiddling w/ bindings too. I've seen ski brakes not work too, leaving guys to butt surf a good run! Also in heavy powder I don't like using powder cords. If you use a thin enough cord attachment, it should break in an avalanche. Just some things, but I could be convinced either way -Iain
