Joseph, the older generation has been complaining about the general decline and overall failings of the younger one at least since Plato. Properly interpreted, I bet there's a cave painting in France that expresses this as well.

There has been a law on the books protecting landowners from liability issues with recreational use of their property, and it had specific language amended to it regarding climbing a few years ago thanks to efforts by Andy Fitz and others. Who's the Access Fund rep in your area these days? I'm sure they could be a great asset in your negotiations.

Jesse attributes things this way because of his feelings and opinions, not necessarily any sort of objective study based in reality. It could just be that there are more people climbing. Trash, ropes, toilet paper, balls of tape (trad climbers!), and other dreck are nothing new. It could be something else, without any science involved we're just making up stories based on our beliefs, supported by selective observations that reinforce our biases. They've been having cleanups since forever. To say that it's the fault of gym climbers, many of whom have grown up with more environmental awareness than anyone who came of age in the 70's, is more about reinforcing one's higher opinion of oneself as compared to "those people" than anything else.

Funny, you don't hear much from George McGovern these days. I still think he'd have made a better president than what we wound up with.

I shook Jeff's hand at a trade show in Seattle in the early 80's, didn't wash that hand for a week. Jeff is a frequent poster on Supertopo these days, under the name Jello. His stories and threads are well worth seeking out there, great reading.

I clipped the hilarity from this post and sent it to Spray.

It is sort of a sad legacy from the Amber scam that women who show up here have to prove their gender, pass some sort of madonna/whore test, and be immediately rugged enough to endure a hazing from strangers, as well as having Raindawg post that picture within three posts. Is HoneyBeeBug real? I dunno, what does it hurt to give someone the benefit of the doubt? Dariasus turned out to be real, even if she's crazy as a mad hatter. Most of the few women who post here have had to pass some sort of gauntlet as a newbie, and not everyone can look as stunning in a Nomex suit as Archie. Anyway, it just makes me sad to see everyone dogpile on any girl stupid enough to look for a climbing partner on this website.

My friend Pat parks his Honda Element in a parking lot in Ashland. He notices a homeless guy reclining in the shrubbery right next to his car, and the guy mumbles something to Pat. Pat moves closer and asks the guy what he said. Homeless guy repeats himself a little more clearly, "Dude, you're out of your element."

Ahh, you sound like a Python fan too,

Does anyone still smoke hash? I came across a reference in a novel last night and was transported back in time, recalling the feel and texture of the stuff, the ritual of the preparation, the smell, the taste of the smoke, It was only the lack of the buzz that kept it from being a full on flashback.

The Skagit Alpine Club seems to keep coming up with shows I wish I were close enough to attend.

Most of the stuff they list is too new for my rack. No RP's? No first generation Chouinard stoppers? No Eiger ovals? No 3/4" machine nuts with a sling through them? WTF?

Hmmm, you're an engineer who must see a lot of contract language, I'd appreciate your suggestion, what should I revise that sentence to read? In person, I usually tell people that if they die out here I'll just dig a hole and throw them and their vehicle in it. That's why I have a backhoe attachment on my tractor. It's worked well every time so far...

Seeing as how waivers are only marginally useful in avoiding lawsuits, I decided to be blunt with the one for climbing in Tenino. " I accept that any day spent climbing at the Hercules #2 Quarry may be the last day of my life. All protection is suspect: bolts can pull and trees may be unstable due shallow rooting, disease, size, or other causes that are not readily apparent. The rock, Tenino Sandstone, can fracture in large and small pieces at any time without any warning. The owners recommend the use of helmets and belaying to the side of the person climbing, but do not guarantee that these measures will prevent injury or death. Beware of all blocks and flakes and do not equate size with stability: large flakes can detach and fall with very little encouragement. The owners do not vouch for the quality, strength or safety of any bolt or other protection placed at the Hercules #2 Quarry. Matters beyond the control of the owners may result in death, injury, or hideous and crippling disfigurement at any time anyone is at the Quarry. I accept that the owners in no way guarantee my safety or survival."
