isn't the point that some vaccines work very well, others not so much? not getting your kids a flu shot doesn't seem nearly as insane as not getting the hpv-vaccine or any of hte others i mentioned above (personal annecdote: my daughter damn near died a few years back during the big swine-flu outbreak, despite getting the vaccine a few weeks earlier - we still give the kids their shot each year, but we don't expect much that'll it help) that said, i get a flu-shot when it's convenient for me, which is most years - i'm an autistic-savant already, so why worry?

is this thread shitting on all vaccines or just the annual flu one? the conventional wisdom, as i've understood it since ever-fuck-afore, is that the flu vaccine ain't very dependable, but the big boys, like for tetanus, diptheria, measles, etc. are actually quite good. read a book once about kids dyiing of diptheria in nome, alaska - holy shit that's a suck-ass way to die, and i'm very happy that vaccines have largely relegated it to history books...

i don't see why the gop would oppose it but then i don't understand the proposal very well - i suppose the system would have worked against them in 2000, but in theory it's still 50/50 when it comes to a close vote instead of washington divying up it's ec votes by the popular vote in this state it uses the national #'s? does that pass our state consitution's muster? i'd be pissed if, say everyone in this state voted democrat, but then had to help hand over power to the replicants. and, as i understand it, the "faithless elector" laws some states have passed are likely unconstitutional, but have never been challenged as so simply b/c it's never been an issue - what happens when the electors of a state decide on decemeber 15 not to vote the way their state said so? i could be talked round to it i suppose, just want to banter about it more... this proposal does nothing to solve the impossibility of a 3rd party taking the white house?
-
doesn't this increase the odds of needing a national recount for a close election, a la florida in 2000 but on a much shittier scale? don't the "swing states" have no motivation to change the status quo, since it brings them so much more attention, and thus potentialy swag from the eventual victors?

current fox article on the subject said 750,000 signed the poll so...3/4 of .3% of the population has their panties in a wad? why should that have me excited again?
-
fuckit, don't know nor care particularly how it happened, but reading my histories of the past millennium i know i ought to be pretty stoked that, whether due to the vaccines i've had or not, i've never gotten tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough, measles, smallpox, polio, mumps, hepatitis, etc.

hey tvash, now that the aclu of wa has won it's first major campaign, is it going to do anything to help washingtonians communicate to the feds their desire to be left alone on the subject? email campaign to the white house or anything of the like? any other plans to win the inevitable next phase?

far more likely he won't hardly be remembered at all ("old soldiers don't die, they blooooooooow away ") - more b/c the national attention span can't begin to hold a 13 year war on the other side of the earth that has affected so relatively few in it's view for more than a few seconds before being distracted by so much more shiny shit korea might have "the forgotten war" but i think when it's all said and done it'll blow afghanistan out of the water.

i love that my little daughter can sing all of "hello mr zebra" - now if only she can learn the piano part...

I saw Primus once back around '92. Very talented guys, but that level of technical ability with a penchant for quirkiness is only listenable in moderate doses, from time to time. super eclectic mix - tom waits, primus n' some crazy ass slav mother fucker [video:youtube]
-
never liked them much, but really dug on primus as a young'un, and rush was clearly a big influence for them - the cheeze vocals are hard to get past...

have you read "guns germs and steel?" basic premise is that diseases that afflict mankind today came largely from herd species we domesticated (excepting tropical ones like malaria), and those diseases flourished amongst people b/c we have a lot in common w/ said critters - thus, yeah, we are a herd species. that said, why diss on herds? cows r tasty!

i can think of no better practical step to start sorting out equatorial africa's immense shit-sandwich than an effective malaria vaccine (probably a pipe-dream, i know, but curious that, should one be developed, it would somehow be percieved as pernicious...)
