    First Ice

It was Olivia's first ice climb. I had set up a climb with an old climbing buddy in Msla and Olivia overheard me. It was obvious that she would be pissed forever if I didn't take her so we packed her gear. The day was perfect. It would have been nice to do Blodget Falls. On the other hand, I will never forget seeing Olivia on points for the first time. And her form was perfect. She will do well. There was also plenty of hot chocolate. The Swan Slab proper had slid a few days before and we exited over the debris, ten feet of ice chunks. There are few times in my life that I have had a day as good as this.

    too old?

I was lucky I survived starting too young.
  3. Rock all the way. Unless you count the descent.
  4. This is a better description of what I did. I like it a lot but have not done the Backbone so I can't compare. I have done Serpentine and like this one better by a lot. Not as much loose rock and a better line in general. It is a cruise with a few "cruxes" of 5.7. Very straight forward route finding. No 5.9 compared to Backbone. You could opt to do the fin too. If you look in the Becky Book, it is actually a combo of two lines that cross at the base of the fin.
  5. Good work! Thanks for the pics. I have done this route in summer and wondered about a winter ascent. I actually cut across the ledges on the face of the fin and then up right out of the gulley. But I am wondering how that gulley would look right now. It loked to be a 5.9 corner with a nice crack. With a little snow and ice, hmmm.

That's why Popes ride in bullet-proof cars these days.
  7. I would do whatever you did to get ready for the 3700 ft day. Then take 3 days. It just seems like a lot to ask of a youngster in 2 days. Or if you two ski, once you get down off the top two snowfields, the skiing is intermediate. Even if you do not ski, there are some pretty good glissades if you have nylon clothes on.

Vasectomy 11 years ago. Just do it.
  9. "My son has done day trips only to date - with up to 3700 foot again and 8-10 miles. " He will like Adams. There is also my Rainier trip with my 12 yr old June 27-30. I hope to summit on the third day.
  10. I aid ice. If I get to a spot that I "should not be leading" I slam in a snarg and hang from that nasty thang while I place a screw. So I am an aider and a skank and I have a lot of fun. Am I going to hell?

You scare easily. What Alex said. Great resource on the subject. In any case, spend as many days as you need to perfect every aspect of crevasse rescue; it's well worth it. Ditto on Alex. There are way too many ways to screw up an eamil or post trying to explain something on the fly. Tv, I too use "natural" supplements to my rack and tools. As was stated earlier, many of those techniques or substitutes might not be appropriate for a newbies forum. Just an opnion, and I do respect yours.

First, most Christians do not like my stand but most Jews did not like Jesus so take it all with a grain of salt. Abortion should be addressed through education and support of birth control. This would have to be coupled with reforms in Public health care and welfare. Huge issue. Not simplistic. Do I think abortions are OK? No. Do I think they should be illegal? Some of them. From here it gets really sticky but I have a really freaking HUGE issue with people who use it repeatedly as birth control just like I have a really freaking HUGE issue with people who think they can tell a raped woman she has to carry to term. Gays are mostly that way due to genetics. The church is behind the times scientifically but they will adapt. Anything that changes rapidly, cannot withstand the erosion of time. We are in a particularly fast changing period and the old ways seem too slow to change. They will. The church is behind the times scientifically but they will adapt. I like your post. hey bug/ant/whatever... no one really has multiple abortions...using it repeatedly as birth control...are you fucking high?? Actually, I know a woman who had 7 abortions with the same man in a five year period. You live in a wonderful little bubble don't you?

I once lowered myself from a blade of grass using a vine I fashioned out of kinnikinik ryzomes and polevaulted over a gorge using askipole and springing off the rib cage of a dead moose.

Agreed. And that goes for those who are the most vocal about their lack of belief, especially when criticizing those who do believe. Why would anyone who does not believe in God, even be reading this thread? Did they not see the subject line? How can anyone claim to know what another person's experiences could have been? Are you really ready to say, "It is a fact that you could not possibly have experienced that."? How many cultures will you be discounting? How many very wise people of all ttraditions and religions, and spiritual paths are you willing to claim to be above in your view of cosmology and science? It just makes me very sad for you. I mean, I hope you are truely happy in your chosen state of existence but it seems very limited by historical and cultural standards outside this board, era, and country.
  22. That thread is in spray.
