  4. My only experience with being caught in an avalanche was on the east face of Mt Washington, in the Olympic Range. I fought like hell to stay on top; but then rolled my body sideways to get to the shallower slower moving edge of the avalache path.
  5. many years ago I saw an old duffer walking the trail up near Robin Lakes, carrying an old box camera. I suspected it was Harvey Manning; and in fact it was, though he seemed reluctant to admit it.
  6. MAP Pacific Inn Pub is just east of Freemont and adjacent to the Burke-Gillman trail.

  13. I came down off of climbing the north face of Index to find my drivers side window smashed in at the Lake Serene trailhead. There was nothing in the car to take, so it was just an instance of malicious vandalism. Before I noticed the broken glass, I was having trouble finding my key cos they had used the rock I had hidden my key under to smash the window with. The irony is that the key was still laying where I had left it, just didn't have a rock there to mark the location.
  14. I believe the #4 remained flat when the larger sizes were made with a curve. I have a flat #4 wired chouinard stopper that I bought in the mid or late 80's.
  15. I wish you well Kurt; hang in there.

My wool knickers wore our long ago; isn't 60 the 'new' middle age?
  19. I remember hearing a long echo from the summit of Kaleetan Peak, resonating up the valley to the east.
  20. the nat'l guard used a UH-1 when they pulled me off of Chimney Rock in '03. They saved my ass for which I am greatful.

  22. pp. 81-83 of Crowder and Tabor's book describes the Black Mountain High Route, starting at Red Pass and finishing around the west side of Lake Byrne. It rates it a Difficult 3,000-foot climb,3850-foot descent,7 miles, 8 hours. Although I have no personal experience with this route, I can pass along the information from the book if you'd like.
  23. ...
  24. I agree with arch on this one. If you are worried enough about hidden shards of glass that you would climb with gloves your taking too big a risk. Even tiny bits of grit that might get into your rope will chafe against the fibers and I wouldn't want to be climbing with a rope that has tiny shard of glass embedded and making little cut each time you move the rope.
