    goddamn advisor

Gary, Having done 6 years of grad school, I hear where you are coming from. I also think that having lots of pressure is just a part of grad school. One school of thought (not supported or bashed here, just presented) is that grad school is at least in part about finding out about how much you can do at 110%. It is a marathon. It is not easy. There are tough moments. There are moments when you want to drop out. If $$, or some idealized job post PhD is why you are doing the PhD, drop out now. It jsut gets harded. If you are truly passionate about what you are doing, the pressure is just a nuisance. If you focus on the pressure, you waste energy, become less productive and get into a negative feedback. In other words, get some perspective. It is natural to get pressure from advisors to perform. Remember that the project and the experience are why you are there. If that isn't enough, it won't be enough and that's just what it is. If your advisor is giving you a truly raw deal (be honest with yourself about this), then shop elsewhere. I know plenty of people who have swapped advisors, departments and even universities. blah, blah, blah.... A few beers and some ranting usually do the trick for me, and I have a good (but sometimes difficult) relationship with my advisor. So, up and get cracking!
  3. That pic is some funny shittake! My brother went out for his first ride on his new CF Calfee road bike... He was screaming down a curvy descent and the next thing he knew he was hitting a guard rail and snapping his collar bone. All in all, he was pretty lucky. It takes a few rides to get used to a new steed. Any of you guys up for road rides again? Or are you all scared off by the thought of a digger? My De Rosa is feeling a bit left out as I've been hitting the mtn bike more often as of late. G

  5. I'd be into some riding later in the month when I'm back from MT and CA. Mmmmm, new single speed to hit the trails with too. Hot damn!
  6. I see the photos and I see the gear review... where's the Double Wall TR? Are you turning into enough of a gear weenie that that comes out before the bragging?

    Lance makes it 5!

Wow. An impressive rider with an impressive team to back him up. A for Armstrong (legstrong) and the US postal riders. That kicks ass! I wonder if they'll make him sportsman of the year like SI did with LeMond.
  8. Also... Good bouldering just below puppy dome by the river. Pick a boulder and go. As you face puppy dome from the wilderness parking lot, there is a 100' traverse called Machine World that is well worth a try for an evening pump. If you want easy top roping, western front has a good selection between .8 and .10 and is usually not crowded. All the classics are classics for a reason. Add Mt. Conness to that list for a long, fun day (.6). If you're headed out to Cloud's Rest, it is also fun to do it as a day hike and hit the E end of the mega slab for some super-duper-fun class 4 scrambles. If you head further west it ends up being .8 adventure climbing according to reliable accounts I've heard. Cathedral is great... on a weekday with an early start. Watch out for the boot-munching marmots at the base (Sierra snaffle). Tenaya is a great view from the top, and Mildred Lake off the backside is pretty damn scenic and rarely sees people. For a long, fun day, start at Elizabeth lake, bag unicorn to all of the cockscomb to echo peaks (5-easy ish) and add on the mountaineers route up the back of Cathedral (class 3/4) or the .6 route if you have time. So much good stuff, so little time. 4 weeks and counting.... As seen from summit of Mt Dana...

    Mt. Pilchuck beta

Don't forget to bring your aid gear for the final tyrolean traverse out to the lookout.
  10. How about "Bush for landscaper and shit shoveler" 2004? I think Ashcroft and Rumsfeld are waayyyy scarier than Shrubya. Anyone else see the puppet strings in action? Problem is, the initiatives that have already gone through will take a long time to undo. More important, is teaching people to think for themselves and not take what is reported as fact to necessarily be so. Critical thinkers make critical voters. .02
  11. Dave, What's the gist of the article for those of us who don't subscribe? It isn't listed on the magazine's webpage. It would be unfortunate if access is denied in the birthplace of mountain biking. Of course, with the Marin trail Nazi's, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise...

I love what I do ... I get to think, have control over my schedule, and spend a fair amount of time outside in really nice places.

    TODAY'S THE DAY???

    ..
  17. Got home from the cubicle, and hopped on the road bike with some friends for a "mellow" ride which ended up being 43 miles of paceline around the north end of lake washington. Sometimes it feels good to hurt that much. But it is still nothing at all compared to the guy who just rode across america in just under 9 nine days flat. DAMN that's burly. Most people are pleased to do the drive in 4 days.

  19. So, check this out... the other day a friend goes to start his car and no dice. Gets it towed to a shop, comes back later... dead distibutor... comes back the next day and it turns out it wasn't the distributor, but what runs the distributor. Some fuckers selected his car as a particular model of Honda, broke in and stole the master computer from under the seat, and covered their tracks. Probably stole it so they could hotrod it for street racing. That sucks chode. They didn't touch anything else in the car. Pretty much a pro job.
  20. So what's with the guy with no member name posting pics of himself in the gallery? Looking for free server space?

    Record budget deficit

PS, fitting lines to the plot above may or not be a meaningful exercise. Looking for significance relationships for an autoregressive system may be more meaningful and facilitate more sophisticated laying of political blame.

    Record budget deficit

Funny, I thought the right wing was simpy trying to bankrupt the govt as a way of permanently removing social programs. Seems a pretty effective maneuver. hmmmmm.... does the war in Iraq count as a social program? Especially the part where the bomblets and food packages were similar in color, shape and size. Fun for the whole family!
