I was working downtown when all that went down - it was pretty surreal to turn on CNN and see an overhead shot of the madness just a couple of blocks away. One morning on the way into work I got a flat. I had to change it amidst a sea of people dressed like sea turtles. Weird. I'll go if I can be a random Anarchist throwing bricks through windows!

I agree - use the gear as it's designed to be used. Tie into the tie in points, and belay from the belay loops. Depending on the biner I have at the time, I'll rap from either one. The answer for old, worn gear isn't to back it up - it's to get a new one.

Yeah...totally sad. He, too, was one of my heroes. His Trango Tower ascent was very inspiring to me in my early days.

It's equal parts webbing and "stretched" shock cord. When the shock cord springs back, the webbing will accordion.

It depends. Down is routinely transported by condensing it to the density of a brick, then shipped for days/weeks at a time with no loss of loft. However, it's perfectly clean. If you take a dirty sleeping bag full of body grease, cooties, spilled soup and whatever else and keep it stuffed with that stuff degrading the down inside, it will certainly affect it negatively.
