  1. so haireball, how are the one-arms coming?
  2. And who's Isaacs and what's the show about?
  3. Crass was punk. Discharge was punk. Even DK was punk; Ramones were never punk. Neither was MDC. Call Rancid pop, call nofx pop, call greenday pop, just don't call them punk.
  4. quote: Originally posted by Dr Flash Amazing: NOFX is middle-class, suburban southern California punk rock, which goes along just fine with DFA's middle-class Subaru, thank you very much. There's no such thing as "middle-class" punk rock. It's an oxymoron. I think that's why a band like nofx is so blatantly ludicrous. They're a cheap and ridiculous knock-off, much like greenday or rancid or any other mtv pseudo-punk band.
  5. Now I see why you like your nofx and rancid so much!
  6. To me, punk embodied just the opposite of the "don't give a fuck" attitude. The bands I mentioned did give a fuck, and it showed through their music (X comes to mind just now, another punk band). To me, the spirit of punk is a "don't give a fuck" attitude about reactionary norms, "fitting in", conservative effetism, or any other form of suffocation and fear. It has nothing to do with style, or the nihilistic generalized pessimism that it came to be understood as in some circles. So in this sense, J. Krishnamurti was punk, Jesus was punk, Nietzsche certainly was punk. Thelonius Monk was punk, Coltrane was punk. Fucking Johnny Cash was (is?) punk. Some dated dried fruit plucking chords that make a similar sound to a musical genre classified as "punk" twenty five years ago is NOT punk, in my view at least. Jeez, you guys take things so seriously, it's hard to have a conversation with you!
  7. I been tomfoolerized! yuck yuck yuck....
  8. Oh heck, don't get all ruffled now, good doctor. You enjoy the music you like. I'd want nothing less for you. You just have a habit of bandying about certain terms very loosely. "Hippy" is another one that comes to mind. I suppose your use of that term mirrors your use of "punk": general, unspecific, perfectly suitable for stereotype.
  9. Hell, Thelonius was more punk than rancid or nofx could ever impersonate.

  11. quote: Originally posted by Dr Flash Amazing: True, but they freely admit that they suck! "tear that poster off the wall it takes up too much space we ain't no fuckin' rock band, man a professional disgrace" - NOFX, 'We Ain't Shit' Do you really think that lets 'em off the hook?
  12. Alright. The Cuff it is.
  13. Let's have it at The Cuff instead!
  14. Whoa whoa whoa, let's hold on a minute. In all our haste and name-dropping, we almost forgot a couple. Jeez, what about Thelonius, huh? And what about Glenn Gould? And a recent fave, Natacha Atlas? Jeez, check her out already, will ya?
  15. Which route did he rename?
  16. Liberation just gives me goose-bumps. I can't remember the name, I think it's cut #6. It builds up to the lines "They found her dead, in the back of the school, with a needle in her arm, baby, three months due, Sasha Thumper" (?). Just the way it builds to that, the story it tells: Childhood, innocence. Fuck. I think both Andre and BigBoi both rap with the Dungeon Crew. I actually heard a little thing about them on NPR. Check 'em out, you'd probably like.
  17. Hey, I thought you said you didn't rap? But unfortunately, you're into that rhyming shit.... [ 10-08-2002, 08:11 AM: Message edited by: sexual chocolate ]
  18. I wanna hear Caveman rap.
  19. No one here listens to rap or hiphop. I wonder what the median age here is....I'm guessing O-L-D. One person did mention Outkast. I must have listened to Aquemini 78 times on my last roadtrip. There's a cut on that thing that actually has made me cry. And the new M&M disc is pretty good too.
  20. quote: Originally posted by Jens: I did take a powder once a long long time ago. I hung on a bolt or two. All I remember was that is was not a route for soft shoes. As a mountin climber I only go to smith about once every three years -So my memory is faded but speaking of stout 12A's, Freebase seemed really hard for the grade. Any thoughts? Hey, I have a thought on that one. My thought is that it's fairly representative of a 12a, but somewhat crimpy and technical, yet most everything at Smith is somewhat crimpy and technical. So in other words, it seems to me fairly representative of a Smith 12a. At Index it might be 11c. At Little Si it might be 13a. [ 10-07-2002, 09:17 PM: Message edited by: sexual chocolate ]
  21. Right now I'm listening to Pavement. Haha. Before that I was listening to that shitty Paul Allen station, KEXP, fucking whores. HAHA. Before that I was listening to Sheila Chandra. Haha. And then before that it was Gillian Welch. And then before that I was enjoying Buckethead. I was kinda enjoying Megadeth in there somewhere, but it was some lame late '90's cd. The Heavies: a partial listen was given and it was kinda neat. Kinda monosyllabic though, bad legs, heavy on the stem, no flower. I don't know if I would travel without Leonard Cohen. I think Leonard is the quintessential traveller himself, breaking on every shore, but never getting wet. What's up with that? He'll die, leaving ashes on the ground, which will then be used to build apartment buildings in New York City, and everyone living there will suffer from ironic melancholy and bad posture. Geez, how do people listen to this fellow? And now Gillian Welch is singing again, and that's all I have to say. Hey, happy listening to everyone as you listen to your favorite music, ok? Don't forget to do a little dance, too, ok?
  22. Jeez, fellas, it's Sunday! It's Funday! It's God's In-the-hills-I-Will-Runday! Everyone take a deep breath and instead of bashing anyone, say a prayer for those that are suffering. Include yourself (if you ever suffer). Include Neil Young (When will I see you again?). Include Dwayner (who could use a prayer, while not admitting it....). Include those that lost a dear friend and loved one in Goran. Include your family and friends, and all the things that you are grateful for. I just said my prayer. Amen.
  23. Why you ending up in polar bear territory?
  24. Thank you thank you!
  25. Thank you thank you!
