Eminent domain has been at the heart of the problem since the Enclosure Movement.

Not by a long shot. That distinction falls to Kelo v. City of New London (2005).
  3. You can go back even farther. Then-ambassador Ho Chi Min (Quoc) asked to meet with Woodrow Wilson when they both attended Versailles in 1919. Wilson--racist that he was--refused.
  4. 55,000 dead Americans hardly rates as a single flaw. At least he had the decency to step aside in '68. Now that was honorable.

And how about labor unions? i'm also not sure that corporations and labor unions should enjoy the same legal protections and rights, since the aims of both (generally) differ so greatly. So who should decide which "aims" are more deserving of First Amendment protection? The government? You've just taken the first step down the slope...

Maybe we should just dissolve the Supreme Court and let justice Kennedy decide all constitutional issues? But you still haven't answered my question.

Like TTK, I'm on the fence with this one. But since you seem to believe you possess clarity, please feel free to explain your lack of consistency.
  9. That's BS. Between FDR, Truman, and JFK--and LBJ's own hawkish FP and brutish behavior--I don't think too many folks were worried at the time that he or the Dems were pussies.

Yes, of course . God forbid an otherwise loyal adherent admit to the entertainment of rational analysis. Back in line, TTK! Commissar Prole will not tolerate the doubt you are harboring.

I agree. But should they be likewise treated vis a vis political contributions?
  13. We spent a full day studying LBJ's "treatment" tactic in an American Foreign Policy course I took last spring. In fact, that very series of photos is in the textbook. Man, that guy was a piece of work.

    And how about labor unions?
  15. I've gotta agree with you. What's with the "oh, we'll just roll over and wait for the new guy to deal with Healthcare" pablum BS? They've got a filibuster proof majority for two weeks, ram that sucker through and tell the Republicans to fuck off. Lose one battle and give up? How about a little leadership instead. Harry Reid is likely going down the next election anyway, he should stop being a coward and get something done. all puns aside, since johnson got out, democrats have all been pussies lbj no doubt woulda been right w/ you off i imagine the bottom line is a ton of dems were looking for an excuse to bail out already... Hell yeah! I mean Johnson was right on about Vietna...oh...well...

The Dems have been hesitant all along because 84% of the American public has some form of coverage and are gonna be pissed off if they have to pay more for less.

"In a stunning reversal of the nation's federal campaign finance laws, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday that as an exercise of free speech, corporations, labor unions and other groups can directly spend on political campaigns." http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/01/21/supreme-court-sides-hillary-movie-filmmakers-campaign-money-dispute/ Looks like the 2012 elections will be Labor Unions v Corporations in an unprecedented orgy of spending.
  19. I'm already with you (philosophically) on gay marriage, although I don't believe it's necessarily an equal protection issue. I would like to see it passed into law by a vote of the enlightened/fair minded and not ordered by the courts. I'm leaning toward j_b/Prole on tighter banking controls too. I couldn't give a fuck about exec pay and bonuses, but no bank should be "too big to fail"--or indescribable from a loan shark operation. Break the big ones apart TR/Taft style. But you can forget about universal government health care and should reevaluate how you define liberal values. I remain convinced that allowing government into our collective asses is a bad idea.

By driving the annual deficit up almost 4x Bush levels? I doubt that even Keynes would support piling on to an $11tn debt like this.

This was Ted Kennedy's seat. In Massachusetts. 70% registered D's. Wow. This doesn't look good for Obama's agenda. I guess this is what happens when a president campaigns on a promise of open government--and then makes secret dirty closed-door backroom deals with a congress that absolutely wreaks. Big-gov health care "reform" is now dead. See you in the middle!
  25. Not to worry, hezaMtguide--I don't think they'll be enforcing this on Mount Si.
