Thanks to a link from Courtney's website, I've been reading a weekly web magazine at Testosterone.com which is mainly for bodybuilders and power lifters but much of it is relevant to just fitness minded folks like me. Anywho, it seems to be the consensus of many writers there that steroids can be used safely in moderation by someone who has researched the proper use and doseage. It also seems that most professional athletes are using steroids and other perfomance enhancing drugs and not dropping dead from it. Say you get a chance to be on a expedition to some exotic Mountain Range, doing a couple of cycles of steroids will make you stronger (if you are working out in conjunction with the cycle) but is there a downside for mountaineers? Has there been any studies to suggest problems with altitude and steriod use? Are climbers already into performance enhancing drugs with sucess and I haven't heard about it? Personally I don't think I'll ever do any climbs beyond what I can train for natrually, but, I am curious about the subject.

YOU SUCK GREG! here i had a nice little thread going and you ruined it! Boo frickin hoo. I wonder if the big scary face in the southern hemisphere are south facing?
-
Me and a buddy were recently talking about all the hard North Faces and easy South routes up mountains like Index, Baring, Rainier, Baker, Hood, Adams, da Tooth, whatever. There is a lot of contrast between the North and South sides of most mountains around here and elsewhere, the Alps for example. Why is that? I have my own ideas (erosion? freezing? aliens?) but I just know there is some geo-master type out there who knows for sure why that seems to be or if it's actually not the case, that there is just as many steep south faces as there are easy north faces.

Come over to the darkside Matt. Become a Capitalist and you can have your own park! We could use some creative thinking over here anyway. Things have gotten dull with all the Enron boys out of the picture, those guys could make money appear out of thin air I tell ya'.

one time I descended a "4th class" gully per Becky's CAG. When we got down we kissed the ground and ran around screamin "I'm alive!"

Could you use a condom? Seriously, I hear that some packpackers keep them in thier emergency kit to use as water containers and other wierdness (obviously). Personally, I'd rather die than drink water out of a prophalactic.

Matt: If you get a Toyota you can drive all the way to base camp on Mt. Everest and haul all of your gear too. Get a snorkle kit for crossing the Pacific and get a good one, it would suck to be 20,000' down there and have a seal pop and then the wife says, "Matt, I told you to get the good snorkle"

I would recomend the old ski poles. lighter cheaper, less stuff to mess with and break, no worries if you lose one, nobody wants to steal them either. The only downside is they can be tough to pack if you are planning to carry over a technical section.

I hear theres a demand for Climbing website developers. No qualifiactions, lot's of time off too.

had a guy on my jobsite swear he had extensive experience with nail guns (he even acted insulted when questioned). Pop. Pop. Pop-AHHHHHHHHH!!!! He nailed his thumb to the ridge board, right through the knuckle. As we were alone on the job, I had to wait unitl he settled down to pull the nail out with the claw of my framing hammer, good times! I briefly considered attempting to knock him out with a 2x4, but, decided he could fall to the floor once his thumb was freed. Nice scar from all of his flailing around. That guy needed medical attention approximatly once per week. Another time, he stood in ankle deep water attempting to plug in 2 wet extension cords. 3 times in a row.

I am reminded of one night, several years ago, walking through a jobsite at the top of a steep hill, noticing a LARGE (4' diameter) empty spool and setting it rolling down the road. We assumed it would roll off into the ditch and maybe take out some barbwire or at best a mailbox, but, it went straight down the crest of the road about 1/4 mile and into someones yard where it came to rest in the middle of a large circle where the above ground swimming pool was now laying in a puddle of water. oops! The same friend I was with that night started a small dozer and jumped when it started moving. being small, it stopped when it a dumptruck. DAMN KIDS!

Sure, it's $225, but from what I've heard it works great. Oh, by the way, don't buy the Essenshell jacket, as the hood sucks, no way to get the thing to fit over a helmet. Otherwise, sew your own with a microfiber shell and fleece lining. You should be able to phone order one from their Dillon MT outlet store for about $180. Phone # is on the Patagucci website.

It has stopped working twice - first time fixed for free by SI, second time replaced (and I bought it used, he he). Also, the new Backcountry magazine has a review of all the better models. I have one of these guys too, it's as accurate as any, no frills and cheap. I haven't had any problem or seen any downside to mine, but, I haven't compared it to any other brands.

Any mountain only using the first edition of Becky for route info or even older or more outdated info, if that's even possible. It just seems more adventurous that way.

I like the Tungsten filled shells for blasting waterfowl, but they are kinda spendy... Brass is best for handguns and rifles, aluminum is kinda cheap and jambs easier for some reason

here's a SD 3-layer jacket for cheap: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/xq/asp/base_no.42226/str_base_no.24271,41204,42014,42016,42022,42075,42076,42077,42081,42082,42087,42182,42186,42213,42225,42226,42270,42377,42411, 42417,/header_title./page_name.prod_list_display.asp/search_type.L2~208/size1./size2./gender.0/ShowImages.yes/sq.0/cont.1/intPgNo.1/special_type./qx/product.asp I have some SD 3-layer bibs that have treated me pretty good.

The thing was to stand in a line on the rail as a train was coming, and see who could be the last one to jump off. The engineers loved this! Stoopidest thing I didn't do was jump off of one train trestle into the open boxcar filled with wood chips of a moving train below. We looked at about 4 or 5 and decided without knowing where they would stop, it would be too stoopid.

I heard Dru is a corporate, self promoting, sell-out bastard who uses slave labor in Ireland to make his slide shows!! He even displays an aparant obsession with giant squids and won't hesitate to expose you to pictures of the helpless giant squids!! He is clearly just attempting to get his greedy sponser "Gander Mountain" to give him some more gear! When will you stop? When will you have enough fame and fortune? What kind of "baked goods" are you trying to push on the kids?!

"hookey-bobing" (holding onto the rear bumper of a car while somone drives and your feet skid along) the problem arrises when you want to stop, the driver usually couldn't hear you, so often you would have to let go and hope for the best. Ruined several pairs of shoes that way. we had a friend who purhcased a van with a roof rack and a firmly attached ladder who would drive us around for hours trying to shake us off the ladder.

here's a link to: Hyalite Ice Climbing if you want some addtional info. That sucks!

using waaaaaaaaaaay too much gasoline to start bonfires. bb gun war with an opponent who had an "adult" type gun trying to kick the neighbor kid off of a tractor via a ropeswing (only 4 stitches) shooting fireworks at cars traveling on HWY 2, the last one belonging to a State patroler who fortunatly didnt have the lungs to catch us TPing a friends girlfriends house for the 4th night in a row, (fortunatly we shaving creamed the windshield of her dads van and he couldn't see where he was going) at about age 12 walking with a friend who thought it was funny to flip off high schoolers driving by. (Learned how to take a punch though) jumping off of the roof deciding to grease the bearings on my bicycle and getting grease all over the coaster brake (no hand brake) then hoping on said bike, riding up a big hill to see how grease helps lower resistance and promptly turning around and riding down said hill into the garage door. taking unauthorized rides in various boats, white water rafting in a flat bottom aluminum boat with shovels for oars. Top roping with 5/8" rope taken off of dad's boat (static), ouch! 4 wheeling with drunk guys in the back of the truck who jump out when they think they are gonna die and they always seem to jump off of a big steep embankment or into the side of a stump or onto a sharp stick or a dry creekbed. shooting arrows at each other as "ninja training" and the arrow roulette. That might be the single stupidest thing right there. "yeah, wait until it's dark, 6 or 7 guys laying in the yard, one fires an arrow straight into the sky...." first knife experiences.(nuff said)

quote: Originally posted by crazyjz: I just recieved the latest AAJ, and there was a lengthy article about a new route on Baffin Island by Jim Beyer. Is this guy totally nuts or what? He has a three year old, and I can't think that she could have a more messed up dad. Why did he reproduce? He appartently has multiple close calls with death, and doesn't care about dying. He is more Twight than Twight. You sound a little jealous ( God knows I am) As a father I see your point, but, really who's to say what's acceptable risk for someone else. I know people who think I am an irresponsible father for climbing at all and I am climb like a wus!
