Jerry: you won't get it any lighter than a book of matches. as long as it's sub-alpine (I don't think the stove would work above sub alpine either) just build a fire and invite the neighbor kids. [ 08-16-2002, 03:37 PM: Message edited by: Bronco ]

I gotta chime in on Godzilla. I followed it once and there isn't a move harder than 5.9 but, it is sustained 5.9 most of the pitch and traditionally, a rating is pumped up a bit for sustainability. I think that move out of the crack onto the face on Jap Gardens is harder than 5.9, but I am a terrible face climber so, idunno.

check these out. My dad bought some similar ones for communicating with his dockhands while he's on his boat. totally hands free and cheaper than a half rack of micro brew. may not fit under your helmet but, you can play war with them still. walkie talkie

As far as DMM cams go, the smaller ones are nice; haven't used the big ones. Greg W Actually the white whale is a 350, and yes I certainly have "little man" issues ARE YOU TALKIN' TO ME!? Matt: I have no plans to climb Castletron Tower in the near future but, the #5 camalot really looks cool hangin on my rack and if I hang a #11 hex next to it, it makes for a good bear bell while bushwacking. Get Friends, E-rock, good friends are always there to buck you up when you need them.

here is a link to a cam review (subject to manufacturer sponsorship of course): http://www.climbing.com/Pages/equipment/equipment-212.html (Dru)

I have been doing some shopping for some big ones myself, and I think I settled on the WC Tech friends, they are about 2/3 the price of the Camalots and almost as good. If price were no object I'd get Camalots, but DAMN - $112.50 for a #5!! WC claims to make the largest (and smallest) cams avaiable right now as well. I haven't used the DMM's but, have heard they are prone to snaggin on stuff with the little horn shape on the end of the cam lobe and they tend to walk and rotate(especially in the larger size) because of the shorter axle.

My family and I climbed onto the fly bridge of a 40' CHB and ate fresh crab for dinner.

I wonder if Buddy Dean (BD) and Moose are named after competing gear manufacturers, hmmmmmmmmm.

"is the rope supposed to go thru this way?" Young lady top ropeing a 5.9 sport route off of a single QD with the rope twisted through the biner which is attached to a single bolt mid-pitch. Dude on the next route over, is belaying his "sick bro" (who outweighs him by 50lbs)while laying in the shade of a tree about 20' away from the base of his pitch, looks over and says to young lady "nah, it shouldn't have that twist in it" Meanwhile, his bro who is on his first lead ever, is struggling toward the last bolt. All fall silent as the Young lady calmly unclips from the QD (40' of air under her heels) takes the twist out, clips back in and says "dirt me" Right about that time the leader of the other party takes a whipper about 10' above his last bolt while his belayer is gaping at the boldnes of the young lady, he is suddenly jerked into the air while his partner plummets twoard the slab below. Belayer miraculously gets it under control, and stops his partner's rapid descent no more than 12" from the slab and certain death or at least big ass scars. The leader regained his senses and stood up on the slab, looked up at the bolt that held him (30' above) and says "Sheeeyat, now I gotta re-climb all that, man"

You might check the Boreal Ace, they are a good stiff shoe that's been around for a while. Can get them through MEC and Barrabes last time I checked.

Matt: Here is a few TR's on the climb from the Barclay lake Trail Head. Becky's description is pretty good too. http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=000028 I'd bet you a beer there is still water up to the high camp where me and bobinc are both suggesting you bivi.
-
I went up to the notch this spring in about 3 hours traveling solo and pretty light. 3rd - 4th class to the summit from the notch. Brush may be encountered up to and along the ridge. There is a good bivi spot below the gully leading to the notch where water a plenty should be. It's pretty typical steep forest terrain for the skykomish valley. Methinks the sparks created by the flint on the cheap lighters are sufficient by themselves to ingnite white gas fumes.

It's fun and realistic target practice for shooting at ducks and geese. PS - nobody really "hunts" pidgeons, you just shoot them when they fly by your barn, apartment, etc. Ahhh now I get it.

Who believes that Afghanistan (or Iraq) will be different? China (1945-46 & 1950-53) Korea (1950-53) Guatemala (1954 & 1960) Indonesia (1958) Cuba (1959-60) Congo (1964) Peru (1965) Laos (1964-73) Vietnam (1961-73) Cambodia (1969-70) Guatemala (1967-69) Grenada (1983) Libya (1986) El Salvador & Nicaragua (all of the 1980s) Panama (1989) Iraq (1991-99) Sudan (1998) Afghanistan (1998) Yugoslavia (1999) I am not really a political person, but, I thought that most of those examples and the Bombing in Afganistan were to eliminate an enemy, not establishing world wide peace. You might want to check in with reality once in a while

Unusual August weather forecasted for Sunday, looks like it could be fun if you're prepared. Don't be a moran! (I intentionally misspelled MORON to poke fun at another thread from last week so leave me alone!) [ 08-02-2002, 10:41 AM: Message edited by: Bronco ]
