  1. hmmmmm... I work in water resources.... Giardia and Cryptosporidium can be found in almost all open water sources in the PNW... in low concentrations. they were first introduced in the 1970's and wildlife, domestric animals and humans have spread them effectively... over 90% of dogs tested in Seattle were carrying giardia in a study in 1994... FWIW something like 40-50% of humans are 'carriers' of giardia in that they can be carrying the cysts and pass them on in their excreta, but never develop the symptoms themselves. The main reasonm you should decontaminate water sources is not giardia or crypto but rather fecal coliforms. And yes generally the higher you go in remote areas, the cleaner the water...does not apply on popular volcanoes obviously, That said I never filter or treat mountain water in BC and I have never gotten sick, even from drinking from the creek beside the Chief trail...actually that trail is so popular I migt not do that anymore. Much better than either iodine (can fuck up your thyroid in high doses, tastes bad) or chlorine dioxide* (can produce low-level carcinogens in dirty water)tablets are the water pump filters, or just boiling the water. *not chlorine as stated above... no commercial backcountry treatments use pure chlorine.. that would be like just dumping beach in your Nalgene... so much for information..back to spray now.

Climbing is a natural progression. Yeah I would love to see my name in the guidebooks or alpine journals too. In fact I think I even had a dream about that once. I would love to climb with some famous climbers that have done a lot of first ascents like Fred Beckey or Don Serl but cause I am such a nobody I guess I will have to keep dreaming. maybe if I practice hard by climbing a lot of 5.7s this summer I will be good enough to bolt some cracks by next year. It sure is a shame I live in an overdeveloped climbing area where there are no new routes to be done and all the peaks and cliffs within 5 days drive were climbed out a long time ago... Thanks crackbolter for pointing out what a gaper I am. I never realized? Sheeeeit if only I could do a first ascent by bolting my way up some cracks then I might suddenly like climbing again right...

  7. on traditional standard routes up 800m peaks.... climbers do not rope up to each other because of the endless fixed ropes they are hooked to. Duh. And the trail of corpses wearing West Pole Brand
  8. Royal Flush at Swift Water. Maybe.

  10. Here is a fact. Trask and Son of Caveman never seen online at the same time. Go figure. Even Capt. Caveman and Chepe occasionally posted simultaneously (Ray used 2 computers. You can too).

I ain't talking about a fuckin power drill at a fucking crag! when the new Waddington guidebook comes out, listing 440 routes on 220 peaks, its gonna be a lot fucking easier to find out which routes on those 220 peaks are unclimbed, and go do a new route, than it is to right now. Is that clear enough for you troll boy?

  18. "the main advantage of the guidebook is not finding out what has been climbed but rather what is still unclimbed" - Dick Culbert. I prefer to do my exploring in areas I know have not been visited rather than reinventing the wheel exploring areas that have already been explored. Thanks anyways.
  19. mattp's point about pitch length applies mostly to routes that have fixed belays set. which is not many of the alpine routes around here anyways. more applicable to multipitch cragging routes. much easier to link pitches with 60s than with 50s. more rope drag too though. if you wanna see the difference go cimbing for a week in the alpine with 1 50 and 1 60 and see how many times you would have used the extra 10m but cant because one of your ropes is too short. belays are down time. take time to set up and beak down. lets say you climb a 600m route of easy rock climbing where you can belay almost everywhere. with the 60s you climb that route in 10-11 pitches instead of 12-13 with 50s. SO you potentially save up to 3 belays which could equate to climbing the route up to half an hour or more faster.

  21. The 2x60m definitely offers more flexibility than the 2x50m for alpine rock especially when doing first ascents, where you must choose to use the ledge at 35m or press on to the one at 58m... or travelling on easy terrain where you can stop to belay almost anywhere as you will routinely run out the extra 10m if you got it.

  24. Rescuing recreationalists allows the military/coast guard/whoever to practice their skills and the money to do these rescues comes out of an already allocated training budget. Then when they have to fly some dude with a bullet in his stomach out of a glacier in Afghanistan they got practice with heli evacs from pulling 100 gapers out of Muir Huit after they got chronic smoke inhalation....
