Yep, the pebbles are great as cushioning but have long been an obvious problem indoors in the Seattle-area gyms. An influence of the UW Rock with unforseen problems? They should take the pebbles from the gyms and use them for the Marymoor Rock (if they haven't already wizened up and put in pea gravel there).

Say It With Me: Supply and Demand

Everything you write sounds like Orbit, except for the excessive lichen part. The flake was something you could sort of squeeze behind, but not get very comfortable? Were there small trees right nearby (just above and right)? After the flake, if you were in the correct dihedral, it should have been a slab with a large vertical wall on the left, making a large RFC. There should have been a roof at the top left. Also there should have been a newer bolt right in the middle of the slab perhaps complemented by an older bolt (if it is still there) so it sort of looks like a hanging belay station. From this slab in a RFC you exit blindly right then up through an intimidating section with some lichen and black rock and a bunch of old lousy looking bolts.

Cool! So is Thumb Rock the one that looks to be about 1/3 the way up (but is probably even less due to foreshortening)?

I'm not sure where the "hero tours" thing is going, but it just seems to me that the US involvement in WWII was much more justified than our invasion of Iraq. And well, say it wasn't? Does the supposition that we did a bad thing before, make it OK to do it now, even more frivolously? Is Vietname a reasonable justification for invading Iraq since we probably won't lose even close to 65K soldiers?

Yes, I think he became the official government Astronomy guy for Finland. Probably a pretty sweet position. But your comment also has some bearing on Squidley's situation. I really doubt running a climbing gym will exactly put him on the path to financial security (unless of course, it helps him land a rich wife!).

OK, perhaps I should have qualified the "without provocation", but I figured I already had too many adjectives in there. World leaders have been "provoking" us as much or more than Saddam did all over the place. I think you will agree that it is far short of the provocations required to bring us into WWII (wholesale invasion and occupation of neighboring countries, actually bombing US forces in a US port!). Sheesh.

Gosh, then what's the reason for this inquiry? If Bush initiated this special-prosecutor stuff over something that wasn't even a crime, then you'd have to agree that, with all the flack this is causing, that Bush really screwed this one up, eh?

This comparison to WWII is completely absurd. Yes there was much more slaughter in WWII. However, in WWII as JayB says, we were fighting to the death. This was a serious, justified war with horrible consequences if we lost or did not involve ourselves. People were justifiably scared and scared people can do some pretty extreme things to defend themselves. Declining to fight the Iraq War ("War" is probably a misnomer, more like "invasion and occupation") never had any such dire consequences. The only reason anybody was ever scared was because of exaggeration of the threat by our government. It is certainly laudable that we are not totally destroying cities like in WWII (*cough* *cough* Fallujah *cough*). But the consequences of our voluntary invasion and occupation are still grievously harming hundreds of thousands (millions?) of Iraqis, and tens of thousands of coalition troops. Because of the total lack of necessity for this incursion, the initiators must be held to a much higher standard than those who were fighting in a life or death conflict. Thus the justification that we aren't killing people at the same rate as in WWII is ludicrous. Certainly for the soldier on the ground, stuck in a life or death situation, the comparions may be more appropriate. But the criminals sitting at home and plotting, going to war with Army we have, not necessarily the one we'd like, should be held accountable for every death, injury and dollar spent that could have been easily avoided by declining to aggressively invade another country without provocation.

So does that imply that Bush or Cheney was the one who leaked to Novak? I'm saying that since Novak said no crime was committed, so the leaker must be someone who has the supposed power to "instantly declassify" information (i.e. Prez or VP).

Though this is not a particulary colorful anecdote, I think it is apt to your situation. A wise former housemate of mine from Finland was a graduate student in Astronomy and his hobby was bird watching. Since a doctorate in Astronomy did not seem like any great key to future prosperity, I asked him why he didn't instead seek a career in Ornithology. He replied, "because if it was my job, it wouldn't be fun". So there you go. Perhaps in order to bring the romance back into your climbing, you should consider quitting your job at the climbing gym.

What about Redboubt/Spickard area? What time of the summer are you talking? Your past trip sounds amazing!

I think it's illogical to use the fact that you failed at a task as justification that the task is not difficult.

People, people, Gary has been away and doesn't yet understand the rules of our new forum. I think it would be reasonable to give him a chance, don't you? I see no need for all these harsh exclamation points.
