    9/11 questions

  2. Time for a Tooth Count of a different sort... I went up there the other day and spied no less than SIX (yes six) fixed cams. Plus one fixed tri-cam and one fixed nut. Unprecedented I say! Man are they jammed in there too.
  3. Good thing you guys didn't decide to leave your hiking shoes/boots at the base of the 5.8 crack (mistake #3)! If you descend down to Colchuck Col instead of Aasgard Pass, then it's easy to fetch stuff from a camp up on the Moraine (and you avoid Aasgard!)
  4. Fairweather and Matt, You should read the David Corn link more carefully before you absolve Rove. Maybe check out that Hubris book too! Here's a link for more exciting reading on the subject!
  5. Someone must have gotten to those guys
  6. What a great-looking climb and one of the best "blow-by-blow" multi-part TR's of all time (so far).
  7. You say that there's a lot of info on IB on this site, but finding just recently got a lot harder with 100 new posts of total garbage that will show up on a search of "infinite bliss".
  8. Verified this Cannonhole on the East Ridge of Dorado Needle. Looks like a pretty good size one. Look on p 308 of the most current Green Beckey. There's a tiny white speck up and left of the "W" in "SW Buttress". That's a cannonhole, not just a dust speck. Here's a more closeup pic
  9. That's Chimney Rock. The main peak is on the right, and the "North" Peak is on the left. See Brown Beckey, most recent edition pp. 181-2
  10. Just West of the West Ridge of Thomson?
  11. That is amazing! Nice job
  12. And here's an incredible irony: "Republicans have done such a good job framing the invasion of Iraq as part of a 'war on terror' that bad news from Baghdad is casting doubts on the anti-terrorism effort, Kohut said."
  13. Paraphrasing quote from Fern, I believe: Stepping on a tree is aid only if you planted the tree.
  14. Yep Little Big Chief/Summit Chief/Chimney Rock/Overcoat . . . Bear's Breast
  15. Going to a doctor is always safe advice. My question is, say it is a hairline fracture of the tibia. What's a doctor going to do? patient: Doc, my shin hurts like hell when I do this (patient jabs shin with finger) doctor: Well don't do that then! Do people get any sort of treatment (cast?) for hairline fractures or does the doc say, "Don't go running for six weeks. Please see the receptionist on your way out about accepted methods of payment. Have a good day" ?
  16. How do you find this Norwegian Memorial Beach TH? If it's too secret for broadcasting to the world, I think PM'ing me the directions would be OK, since I'm special.
  17. ..some of these aren't sounding like very good family activities I was packing last night and unthinkingly put in a conservation society type shirt in the mix. I came to my senses and replaced it with one proclaiming my allegiance to NikeĀ®
  18. I'm gonna be in Forks this weekend with family (kids and relatives and such). Anybody got any good tips for what we should definitely do? Thinking mostly nice short* hikes out near the ocean, but other rec's are welcome. *short by cc.com "Olympus in a day" standard. Short by "Das Toof in a day" standard even better. How about any grub recommendations? How about stuff to do right in Forks? Please reply quickly. Leave in 2 hours!

I just wanted to chime in here about what a great discussion we had here. Lots of insightful, well-thought-out comments really got me thinking about the issues here. Thanks guys... Except for cj001f of course. What a wanker, someone should ban that guy... We should have a lot more these exciting political discussions since the climbing season has basically played out

    The strategy is?

I must have missed the connection between bombing Beiruit and getting rid of rocket batteries near the border of Israel.

    The strategy is?

No numerical isn't = moral but it seems like at some point the numerical has got to enter into the equation. I agree that good intentions help, but even if you've got the moral high ground, you still need to factor in whether the ends justify the mean. I mean just because we hate dictators that have rape-rooms we really shouldn't go igniting a conflagration that'll end up killing 100,000 people, even though we have the obvious high ground, should we? Oooh wait. Too late for that one.

    The strategy is?

In Yugoslavia during the German occupation Yugoslavian partisans (hiding behind the people) would sometimes kill a German soldier or sympathizer or two. The SS would respond with rounding up 10 times that many civilians and executing them. This 10:1 ratio was, I believe, determined afterward to be a war crime. So far 600:18 that's 33 times retaliation. If that's OK, what would NOT be OK? 100 times? 1000 times? Would Israel be excused if they killed 1 million because "if they really wanted to" they could kill 5 million?
