You are correct, a poor family will pay less $$, but they will pay a higher proportion of their income because they have to spend with a higher proportion of their income. Another reason I don't like taxes on consumption is that it makes goods more expensive. Also, income tax is more aesthetically appealing. The reason you are being taxed is to keep the country going and allowing/helping you to earn a living. It has more appeal. The government makes roads, fights off enemies, protects copyrights, makes it safe for people to walk to your shop. It is helping you do business. You return in kind with a tax on your income. How can sales tax be aesthetically justified?

This may not be a real "crag" like Jens was thinking about, but for me I'd have to say Snoqualmie Pass. And yes, a big part of Sno Pass for me is The Tooth. When I get out, many times it's short notice. Heading up to Sno Pass is quick and I don't need a partner. Because I go there so much, I am becoming more and more familiar with the place, learning about lots of nooks and crannies. That makes it feel like my "special place". Went up to Red Mountain yesterday. Did the Stoney Red Slabs route, no snow on the slabs, but snow mostly everywhere else at that elevation. Did some good trundling too . Heading up to the summit was postholing in crusty snow . Crazy man! I bet there's a ton more snow up there now.

I just feel the need to step in here with j_b !!!! I don't know how or why you do it. I'd get so bored so quickly with all these idiots continually hurling mindless insults. It'd be really hard for me to keep coming back with substantiative replies knowing full well that the only comebacks would be fifteen pointless repetive curses from three different people using 5 different names. I'd have been moving on long ago. With the likes of Trask, Cracked, Fence Sitter, and braindead "newcomer" Minotaur stalking j_b throughout any thread he posts on and f*king ruining it with mispelled slurs, it's especially amazing that he even visits this board anymore . I don't know why he does it, but I'm sure glad he does. Thank you j_b for keeping these idiots busy so they don't ruin every damn thread on this board. Here's to you j_b . You're made of stronger stuff than I.

Crux, Your reply is quite eloquent, but it doesn't sway me in the least. In fact, it makes me more upset about what the FS is taking away, from me. What you glorify in your prose is still there for me, easy access to uncrowded mountains. Your implication that it is now crowded and needs to be locked up is contrary to my experience. Yes, you will enjoy it and "get damn tired". But no longer will my seventy-five year old father, who I took up there a few years back. Not my kids, not until they can hike 7 miles and not hate me for it. I see this as you being happy that something is being taken away, from others. Sorry. As much as I hate to say it, I see this as Fairweather does. Elitist hikers want the area closed off for their personal gratification and the FS is happy as hell to remove large tracts of land that they are responsible for policing.

They must like JayB more than me (who doesn't?) 'cause I've never gotten anything less than a week turnaround at Ramuta's. Always seems to do a good job. I've heard lots of people bitch about Dave Page, but I've never had a bad experience with them except for the fact that he can be really surly. One time one of my rock shoes had a small part that was delaming (after bringing them in for a new resole) and he did them for free (though was surly about it). Another time I brought my hiking boots in to get a patch in the uppers. I don't know what they were thinking but they did resoles on 'em! Didn't charge me.

I didn't read any of the links above, but perhaps the reason that jets were not scrambled is maybe because people had a hard time with the idea of shooting down a passenger jet full of people? I've always thought (without a shred of evidence mind you) that there is a good chance that that PA plane actually did get shot down, and that hero story was just made up to make people feel better and derail any shooting-down-a-passenger-plane full-of-americans controversy.

Any interest in checking out Fee Demo Wall tomorrow? Static Point or another crag would be cool too but time would be limited (Seattle -> Seattle ~9am-8pm). Send a pm or email (email better, don't plan on checking the board much today), cspieker at comcast d0t net Chuck

I keep telling people to check out the N Ridge of Foggy Peak, so check it out. You'll get to schwack through some colorful bush and then you'll pop up over Ida pass and there might still be a snowfield (glacier?) on the other side. Then traverse around to the N Ridge for an airy scramble (~5.4) on granite. Up by Glacier Basin, so you'll want a bike to keep it in your 8 hour range. These two are mostly hikes and off the Suiattle River Road, so it's sorta close to Mtn. Loop. Check out Sulphur Mtn. at the end of the Suiattle River Road. There's a steep trail up to Sulphur Mtn. and you can also work your way along the ridge to more peaks if you got time. Hurricane Peak (above Boulder Lake) is a cool easy scramble too. Drive up Tenas Creek Road (off of the Suiattle River Road), there's a trail from there to Boulder Lake. Oh, and Gothic Peak is cool, but the basin up below it is a moonscape and might not contain primo Fall colors (but the hike getting there would).

Sorry guys, I have tried to stay out of this, but banning Dwayner is lame. I guess banning Dwayner is analogous to throwing some drunk out of your party who just won't shut up. It's obviously the host's right, and it makes all the people inside feel more comfortable, but there's still something unseemly about it.

Pfft ... how did you get it into your head that a bike ever has the right of way? to bring up another exciting thread... "Cops don't protect you. Don't have a clue. C'mon boys, don't forget article II!"

"When you laugh at the lightweight, lard-ass armchair warrior, he gets very uptight because the bullshit game is not being played by both parties. The armchair warrior realizes that he is "playing with himself." This suits him just fine. He knows you better than you do anyway. Hey, if you don't go outside then you have to try and convince everybody that inside is cooler. What a prison that is."

Can anyone see this? Is it just my computer screen or does this look like a big ol' picture of black?

I never honk at dumbasses who can't make it through the lights. I just teach my kids to cuss instead.
