Dillon Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Just saw this on the Grivel Website. Better stock up now. http://www.grivelnorthamerica.com/index.php Quote
Hendershot Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Wasn't Grivel North America just the US distributor? For us consumers, it will just affect the availibility of grivel products. Quote
Couloir Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 GNA SIGNS OFF Grivel North America Over and Out BY MARK TWIGHT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hail Citizens, Grivel North America ceased distributing Grivel products on September 1st, 2008. We did our best over the last few years to keep the company alive but the flagging US economy and the Euro’s strength against the dollar prevented us from doing so. Retail customers may contact the following dealers to purchase Grivel ice axes, crampons, helmets, ice screws, packs and some replacement parts while supplies remain. The Mountaineer http://www.mountaineer.com Mountain Gear http://www.mountaingear.com Recreational Equipment, Inc. http://www.rei.com Second Ascent http://www.secondascent.com Mountain Equipment Co-Op (Canada only) http://www.mec.ca Warranty and repair issues must wait until Grivel determines how they will service the North American market in the future. Stand by for more information. I thank the individuals who used Grivel ice tools and crampons and believed in the performance enough to keep doing so year after year. Quote
ivan Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 so who'll likely be picking up the slack? Quote
Peakpimp Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Shit i need to order some g-14's pronto Quote
CascadeClimber Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 We're going to end up with only one effing choice for gear here: BD. This is bad for the consumer all the way around. Suck. Quote
mkporwit Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Ummm, Petzl? Camp? Stubai? DMM? They all make crampons and/or ice tools... I love my G12's and my Rambos, and I should probably get a few picks for those tools, but this doesn't limit consumer choice all that much... Quote
Hugh Conway Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Ummm, Petzl? Camp? Stubai? DMM? They all make crampons and/or ice tools... ummm, Grivel still makes crampons and ice tools. they just lost distribution. Distribution for everyone on your list, save Petzl, is crap. Quote
mkporwit Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Go ahead Dru, rub it in Meanwhile, we're stuck with the coop that caters to the latte-swilling, margarita-drinking yuppie. Thank God for FF and Marmot. Time to make this an REI-bashing thread and move it to spray... Quote

crackers Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Thats business speak for our supplier doesn't understand the impact of exchange rates unlike Petzl. I think you've got a good point there. Quote

As far as stubai is concerned... I believe that you can get a ton of their stuff through liberty mountain sports. Just a tip. Quote
JoJo Posted October 1, 2008 Posted October 1, 2008 Ability or inability to compete or understand exchange rates is only a part of the story. My guess is that the Europeans just didn't care enough about the North American market to make any concessions or share increasing costs to help the men in SLC stay in business. IMHO. Quote
