allthumbs Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 You're walking down a deserted street with your wife and two small children. Suddenly, a dangerous looking man with a huge knife comes around the corner and is running at you while screaming obscenities. In your hand is a Glock .40 and you are an expert shot. You have mere seconds before he reaches you and your family. What do you do? Liberal Answer Well, that's not enough information to answer the question! Does the man look poor or oppressed? Have I ever done anything to him that is inspiring him to attack? Could we run away? What does my wife think? What about the kids? Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knife out of his hand? What does the law say about this situation? Is it possible he'd be happy with just killing me? Does he definitely want to kill me or would he just be content to wound me? If I were to grab his knees and hold on, could my family get away while he was stabbing me? This is all so confusing! I need to debate this with some friends for a few days to try to come to a conclusion. Conservative Answer BANG! Quote
AlpineK Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 You haven't done enough stereotyping of Liberals. What liberal would be an expert shot? Further, what liberal would own a gun? Quote
Greg_W Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 You haven't done enough stereotyping of Liberals. What liberal would be an expert shot? Further, what liberal would own a gun? A liberal who escaped from the oppression of conservative parents who ran away to college to become enlightened. The liberal received the gun as a gift from his "gun-wacko" father and is on a family outing to take the gun to a government-sponsored buy-back program. Quote
rbw1966 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 You haven't done enough stereotyping of Liberals. What liberal would be an expert shot? Further, what liberal would own a gun? I have liberal tendencies. Expert marksman and former military light weapons specialist. I even own a handgun and would use it without hesitation in the above-described scenario, although I never pack. I'm not sure why Trask uses this scenario as a jumping off point to contrast liberals/conservatives. Justice sometimes does in fact come from the barrel of a gun. Quote
iain Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I also have several friends from back in the day who are pretty damn proficient with firearms and are as "liberal" as you seem to label me at times. This is a stupid comparison. Quote
Greg_W Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 (edited) I even own a handgun...although I never pack. Then it would be useless in Trask's situation. Always carry, always ready. Edited January 24, 2003 by Greg_W Quote

gregm Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 so gregw, just curious, do you pack when you're climbing? Quote
allthumbs Posted January 24, 2003 Author Posted January 24, 2003 Always carry, always ready. -- Greg W Yes, we all see that you are, Greg Quote
Greg_W Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 (edited) so gregw, just curious, do you pack when you're climbing? Assume that I am when you meet me next spring. Trask - hahaha!! That's funny. This past elk season we hadn't seen too many animals and I was afraid to take a shit on a hunt for fear that I'd see animals mid-doody!! Edited January 24, 2003 by Greg_W Quote
gregm Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 so gregw, just curious, do you pack when you're climbing? Assume that I am when you meet me next spring. good non-answer. Quote
Greg_W Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 good non-answer. gregm - It is a non-answer on purpose, and I'll tell you why. It is not for you, or anyone, to know if and when I am indeed carrying. It is for you, and everyone, to expect that I probably am. THAT IS THE DETERRENT EFFECT OF CONCEALED CARRY PERMITS. Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Greg, you seem like a nice enough guy and all, but it would give me the willies being around you in a bar knowing you were packing heat. I've never touched a gun and only once even seen gun up close. I have no interest whatsoever. Quote
Cobra Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Guns are great. Let's go shooting GregW. Violence is a pretty red painting. Quote
Greg_W Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 catbirdseat - You need not worry, it is illegal to carry in a bar in the State of Washington. So, we can meet for a beer anytime, without fear. Quote
Greg_W Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Violence is a pretty red painting. That's beautiful, man. <sniff, sniff> Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Thank you. I did not know that (guns were not allowed in bars). Just curious: do you spend a lot of time worrying about becoming the victim of a crime? Have you been a crime victim? Violent crime? About the only thing that has ever happened to me is that my car was stolen in the dead of night. Never been a victim of violent crime. I suppose I'd be differently disposed towards guns if I had. Greg_W Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I've been in compromising situations and narrowly escaped and had my life threatened twice. Bottom line is that I REFUSE to be a victim, or allow my family to be victimized. In my sphere, I believe seriously that I am responsible for the protection of my family and I take it very, very seriously. Does that answer your question? Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 This reminds me of the Jay Leno Show the other night. They had this dude who could supposedly crush walnuts shells with his glutes. He put a mustard squeeze bottle between his cheeks and squirted a stream of mustard about 20 ft in the air. These two contestants had to try to catch as much of the mustard on hotdogs as they could in order to win Superbowl tickets. One guy got it right in the eye. Quote
freeclimb9 Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 Trask, why politicize such a scenario? Why not work on something more divisive with an even more absurd application of politicalization? How about abortion rights, gun control, and the funding of the EPA? Quote
Cobra Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I carry guns because it's fun. Next time some bicycle gets in the way I'm ready. And the next time someone cuts me off they'll regret it. Plus it's real fun to shoot animals and skin em up. I need a new rack on my garage this year. Maybe I'll win the mountain goat lottery. How about shootin beer bottles and shit too. Quote
catbirdseat Posted January 24, 2003 Posted January 24, 2003 I've been in compromising situations and narrowly escaped and had my life threatened twice. Does that answer your question? Yes. I firmly believe that the best way to avoid violence is to leave the bars well before they close. Seems like whenever you read about some guy getting stabbed or beaten at Pioneer Square its at 2 am. Always 2 am. Quote
