did you find this link in a banner ad? Livestrong!!!

I wonder what the recent obsession to lists is, anyway? "6 reasons to never do such and such" or "7 things to never say to a woman" -- it's very en vogue right now.

right next to the "Insurance companies hate this" and "one weird trick invented by a mom"

I even saw that a billionaire is warning americans to prepare for financial ruin. Look how pensive he is.

We now break from our regular programming. This just up on FOX:

"GOP pushing to save millions of Americans BOOTED BY OBAMACARE"

LOL

Obamacare will prove to be one of the most popular policies in history, and the GOP, ever on the wrong side of same, well knows it. Single payer, the inevitable end game here, will be even more popular.

I'm glad you're amused, but I don't need FOX News to tell me the first part of your post is true. My wife and I received our cancellation notice from United Health Care last month telling us that our coverage ends this Thursday. Well done, Democrats; we're much happier now. :anger:

Yes, I'm sure that was Obama's fault that your health care coverage got cancelled. That's the first reason I'd come up with.

You might actually ask them why they cancelled before hitting FB. I'd wager the cancellation has more to do with you (payment history is a common cause) than the soshulists.

The millions of folks who can no longer be cancelled when they actually get sick beg to differ.

Just a thought.

United Healthcare is dropping tons of people, it looks like they're no longer interested in being in the individual insurance business -- I suspect it's because they can no longer cherry pick healthy people and charge them high premiums. And unfortunately, the ACA exceptions that are supposed to allow non-ACA compliant policies to be grandfathered are narrowly written. It's too bad for you personally, but I suspect that shaking the insurance industry out a bit will have some one-offs like this.

In other states, they are giving people 18 months notice though, so it's weird they only gave you a month. It sounds like you might be better off without them -- luckily, I found insurance on the WA exchange to be quite affordable, have you been able to replace your policy with another (better) company yet?

Geeez, and you wonder why people don't like you? :noway:

The reason they gave is the provision under the ACA that, for all intents and purposes, eliminates the catastrophic plan my wife and I preferred.

If United didn't give you 90 days notice, sounds like they violated the law. If they did, you've had 3 months to find a replacement plan.

So get another plan, already, there are plenty to choose from. You can feel good about no longer giving your money to a company that cancelled on you.

There are other catastrophic plans. I'm on one, they haven't cancelled, it's cheap, so quit whining and spend an hour fixing your problem.

Somehow, given your history, I'd wager we're not getting the *cough* full story here. Did United give you advance notice? Did they offer you alternative programs? If not, they broke the law. If so, well, go elsewhere. That's the free market for ya. You've been against single payer all along - no such cancellations are part of that world - so you'll forgive me if I find your current situation a wee bit apropos.

The first thing my private insurer did was raise my rates 10% - 2 months after I signed on, so my opinion re obamacare is a bit different.

As for cancellations nationwide, one, if not the, primary reason may be that ACA mandated family planning coverage conflicts with the Catholic's Ethical Religious Directives. As 20% of hospital beds nationwide - and 45% in WA - are Catholic owned, this is a huge factor, here. Even religiously neutral insurers are being heavily pressured to resists the ACAs family planning requirements. United may or may not be one of them. Perhaps they're simply taking this opportunity to cull their lower profit programs and/or customers.

As for how well I'm liked, I'm all good, thanks. That some jaggoff on the innernutz doesn't like me isn't something I lose a lot of sleep over.

Yep, you were right. Note to self: do not share personal anecdotes in the presence of tools--particularly ones that fly in the face of a particular utopian worldview.

Of course I can't just "fix" my problem since I can't get straight answers from OB & Co--or even a legitimate quote! Well done TTK & friends.

The millions of folks who can no longer be cancelled when they actually get sick beg to differ.

Serious question: do you really believe that millions of people actually get their policies get cancelled when they actually get sick, for no reason other than they got sick? That seems quite improbable for dozens of reasons - not the least of which is that in addition to all of the state laws prohibiting rescission, the fact that doing so violates the terms of virtually every health insurance contract in existence and courts can and do enforce the terms of contracts, the contracts only permitted rescission in the case of deliberate and material fraud, virtually all rescission cases were subject to outside review...as of 1996 or 1997 the Health Portability and Accountability Act prohibited it at the Federal level for the rare cases that weren't covered by other statutes.

If you meant people with pre-existing conditions who could not get insurance, people who failed to disclose pre-existing conditions and were subsequently denied coverage, people who let their insurance lapse, etc then it's plausible that the number could range into the millions, but it would be interesting to see the actual data.

The actual reason behind the overwhelming majority of the policy cancellations in the individual and small-group market is that they don't satisfy the ACA's coverage requirements. The coverage they offer isn't comprehensive enough to satisfy the ACA, the cost-sharing features (deductibles, copays, etc) are too high to satisfy the ACA, etc.

Most estimates I've seen put the percentage of individual/small-group policies subject to cancellation because they don't satisfy the ACA mandates at something like 50 to 80%, which IIRC works out to something like 8-14 million people or thereabouts.

Most ACA fans that I've spoken to or who have written opinion pieces that I've read think that on balance, this is a good thing, since they didn't think catastrophic coverage was "good" coverage, and also generally thought it let the young and/or healthy play in their own risk pool and skip out on their obligation to cross-subsidize the obese, sick, old, chronically-ill, etc through their premiums. E.g. to them getting rid of or significantly reducing the availability of catastrophic plans is a desirable feature of the law, not a design flaw.

Could be worse - you could be this person:

"Pam Kehaly, president of Anthem Blue Cross in California, said she received a recent letter from a young woman complaining about a 50% rate hike related to the healthcare law.

"She said, 'I was all for Obamacare until I found out I was paying for it,'" Kehaly said."

Yep, I think there's gonna be a lot more of that. "You mean...it's not gonna be FREE???" Once the bulk of the middle class realizes they were lied to about keeping their doctor, insurance, etc., the party of social engineering is going to pay dearly--as they should.

Not "free" but "affordable" and guess who gets to decide who can 'afford' what?

One understandable bout of skepticism re the typical Obamacare bullshit and I'm stripped of all me pals and forced to watch the Perletti Brothers once again form the human centipede

The story just broke yesterday. Do you see Larry, do you see what happens when you read the BBC instead of the NYT for a single morning?

Mandated anti-librul rantings aside (certainly no 'blame' could be shared by health insurance lobbyists, their clients, nor their legislative toadies - you know, the ones who just...lets see...what just happened lately?). we all get to watch the latest of many trainwrecks at Dysfunction Junction unfold together. Hard to say if the public will be more pissed about having to go through an unexpected 'open enrollment' or seeing their government shut down and the world's economy ass raped without an I Love You at this point. Then again there's that pesky Big Bro thing - kind of a shared responsibility, that one.

Reckon that's what elections are for. HINT: The GOP would do well to switch from a 'repeal' to a 'repair and reform' mentality, here. That would require some level of function, however.

More popcorn!

Oh, and Single Payer, here we come. AWD recommended.

Despite early strong support for the measure, a recent poll suggests sentiment against the measure, known as I-522, is growing amid an onslaught of corporate-financed advertising ahead of the Nov. 5 referendum. Voters will decide whether many common grocery items containing ingredients from genetically altered crops should be labeled as such.

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, said in a lawsuit filed Oct. 16 that the grocery group illegally collected and spent more than $7 million while shielding the identity of its contributors.

Looks like somewhere between 2 and twelve million of us "aren't paying our bills" as cc.com's well-insulated-from-reality-resident-know-it-all believes. CBS News Sometimes it's just sad to see how long slow kids will keep trying to fit that peg in the wrong hole--and likewise to hear the stories they'll concoct to explain their failing worldview.

Single-payer? Heck, this idiot president and his Democrat moron worshipers can't even get a much simpler program right with four years of lead time. I'd say that Obamacare hasn't done single-payer socialist dreamers like TTK any favors this go-round. And it's gonna get worse for them as more Obamacare bullshit is revealed.
