  1. Spokane partners?

Looking for some adventure buddies in the Spokane area. I do some technical climbing at the crags but my goals are more oriented towards glacier mountaineering, scrambles, and some non-technical off-trail destinations. I'm experienced in glacier travel and have climbed Baker and Rainier multiple times, as well as many other classic peaks in the N. Cascades. Intermediate routes like the Kautz, Frostbite Ridge on Glacier Peak, west ridge of Stuart, etc... appeal to me. Have not been around the Selkirks or the Cabinets much yet but would like to see more. I'm a reliable guy in my early 30s who doesn't like to let a good high pressure system go to waste. PM me if you want to collaborate
  2. Best metal bands

What is "butt rock"? Is there an agreed upon definition?
  3. Kautz Glacier question

Planning on a Rainier climb via the Kautz within the next couple weeks. Just wanted to hear opinions on descending the route vs. a carryover to the DC. I guess my main concern is being underneath an ice cliff later in the day in the case of a Kautz descent, but I'm not sure how much of an objective hazard that poses these days.
  4. Wilderness First Responder vs Wilderness First Aid

Definitely agree. The scenarios really help you get the system down for how to manage situations. That was the biggest take home for me rather than the specifics for treating this or that particular injury or illness.
  5. Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike.... What day is it?

I think his term might be shortened when some of that kompromat Russia has on him somehow finds its way out...
  6. Expanding North Cascades NP

I thought I would post a few links about the proposed NCNP expansion in case anyone is interested. The proposal area has been scaled back in the last few years from what it was. http://www.americanalps.org/ http://noparkexpansion.blogspot.com/ http://www.environmentwashington.org/programs/wae/protect-north-cascades Some front-country facilities and developments are proposed but most of the additions will continue to be managed as backcountry wilderness. The Liberty Bell group would be included in the new boundaries.
  7. Black Diamond pick compatibility

Can anyone tell me if the straight-shafted BD X-15 tools are compatible with the current picks they sell? Thanks.
  8. Go Bernie

Uh... that is weird. Why does it spell out l-i-b-e-r-a-l when I write in l-i-b-t-a-r-d? The supreme court has roundly rejected prior restraint.
  9. Go Bernie

Cool! After a period of absence from CC, I come back only to find that the Libtard Parade has run its course and there is fresh spray! How about a Bernie/Paul match up? That would be cool, right?
  10. Out of control dogs at the Coulee

How about a crag cat instead? Climbing Cat
  11. Drones

Very true. I however strive to break the DNA bonds that confine me (I guess all I have to do is break a few hydrogen bonds really) and be the first of my species to be completely selfless, invisible, and will be completely sustained by air, perhaps through nitrogen fixation. I will defy human evolution and I will not film it or write a trip report about my transformation. But it is actually pretty cool, so I should at least mention it in spray.
  12. Drones

The new, more obtrusive and irritating incarnation of the Go Pro for self-important types.
  13. best of cc.com photos of Really Big Housecats

Remember this gem from last year? Cats are loyal critters. When they feel like it. [video:youtube]
  14. best of cc.com photos of Really Big Housecats

Fat cats are more humorous and charming than skinny cats, but someone told me about their cat getting diabetes. Not so fun.
  15. [TR] Whitechuck - Standard 2/21/2015

    Nice action shots. Loved it.
  16. Libtards on Parade: Alcoholism, Corruption, Murder

FW, I have seen you hold your own here and make some good points, but then you post something that looks like one of the chain emails my grandma ocasionally forwards me.
  17. Bertha/Traffic Woes

Interesting. As a kid, I remember my dad telling me "build it and they will come", regarding proposed freeways, new roads and additional lanes.
  18. Low Snow Year's Impact on Summer Volcano Climbing

I don't think Lassen has any left. If I recall correctly from the Harris book I mentioned, the glacier on Thielsen is the southern-most glacier in the Cascade range (not counting those on Shasta). I also remember reading that there was one on McLaughlin that disappeared in recent times (1920s I think?).
  19. Expanding North Cascades NP

Sounds like we're on the same page then. I'm not worried about logging, just logging in adjacent wilderness-quality land that is not officially designated as wilderness. If none of the additions in question are actually threatened by future development, then I see little need for expansion.
  20. Low Snow Year's Impact on Summer Volcano Climbing

If you want some readable, interesting background info on the volcanoes and their glaciers, Fire Mountains of the West by Stephen Harris is a very nice resource.
  21. Expanding North Cascades NP

Funny, I was just thinking about this issue again the other day. I have preferred the status quo, but I have also read there will be a revision in the NW Forest Plan, and it makes me wonder how safe some of these places will be this time around. But maybe the Roadless Areas Conservation Rule has enough teeth to stop any hypothetical future development in these areas? I've been on the fence but new developments might be pushing me to support these additions. Thanks for the bump.
  22. [TR] Tragedy at Alpental - Kiddie Cliff 12/3/2014

So sorry to hear about your accident. Stay strong and positive- there's still some awesome adventures to be had. A friend of mine was just recalling a 3 week kayak tour of remote areas in Southeast AK. He said it was the best adventure of his life.
  23. Cascade Volcanoes in One Season

That is a very cool idea. I have talked about a Cascades volcano road trip with my brother, but we never seem to get beyond Shasta. I don't have any info or advice other than be careful, because there are a lot of cool things to distract a lover of the outdoors in that part of California.
  24. Living in Anacortes?

Baker is a long drive from anywhere except maybe Glacier and Maple Falls. If you wanted to work in the ski industry near the area you'd probably need to live in one of those 2 towns. And they aren't exactly Vail or Park City. The friends I've had who worked at Baker full-time and lived in Bellingham got burnt out after a season or two. I used to spend a fair amount of time in Anacortes. I kind of like it there, but it is quiet and you'd probably want to take up sailing or sea kayaking if you have a big appetite for the outdoors. It can get a bit crazy in the summer with all the island bound tourists. Is the Hidden Wave shop gone from Burlington now?
  25. Net Neutrality

The take home message I got: a)People are upset about their netflix b)If Obama were to suggest that he enjoys a cold beer and a hot shower after work, Ted Cruz would probably counter with his preference for a warm V8 and an ice water bath.
