Ok... so I was clearing out my gear closet, and found three boxes of expired gu gel. (expired June of 2008). The responsible part of me says to just throw this away, but the cheap side of me says to use them up.

So, I need the advice of the collective... would you use it?

they're OK, but the texture and taste might be weird. I've eaten 2-year old ones before and nothing bad happened. Was a bit grainy.

P.S. if you decide you don't want them, I'll take em

I just polished of a box of hash browns that had been in my car camping kit since the last century. The date on the box put the potatoes growing in Bush 1 years. They actually weren't bad.

ok... just knocked one back. french vanilla. A little wonky tasting... not like they tasted great in the first place. Feels a little thinner in consistency... no hard crunchy stuff.

I will update this with every detail, over the next day or so. Yep. Every detail.

I don't know how something that was presumably pasteurized and sealed could ferment unless it were damaged and wild yeast got in, and anyway, even if it some yeast was alive in there and it wasn't damaged, then it would probably pop from the C02 build-up -- or should at least be obviously bloated.

I don't think sugar really goes bad. Protein and amino acids probably do?

expired gu is all I've had for the last few years. bought a big pack of it and then lost it, didn't find it until it was 2 years past. either way gu tastes terrible, just open up your throat and suck it down.

I've bought a lot of expired gu off of ebay and other places for super cheap. No complaints. In 2007 I bought a box of 100 power bar protein bars that had been expired for a couple of years, and I think that I ate my last one just a year or so ago and threw a handful of them away because I couldn't stand the flavor anymore. Might even have a few left in a box somewhere at my mom's house if anyone wants to push the limits or train for eating in the third world or something.

Exactly. I've been buying Power Bar gel at our local GrocOut for several years and it always seems they are selling it right before the exp. date. I buy 6 or so boxes at a time (b/c availability is spotty) and eat them for 1+ years past the date. I can't tell a difference between the 1st and last package; but I'm not too picky either.

I havent eaten non-expired gu's and bars for years. When the random and decent expired powercrap hits the Grocery Outlet I buy 5-10 cases of each. I like to keep 3-4 types of bars going for variety and always buy as much of the gu's, shotblok type stuff as I can as I usually run out of these faster than they expire and hit the shelves (geuss I should check ebay.. thx Dan).

Though eating those damn strawberry/bannana power gels for 2 years got pretty damn rough by the end.

I've hauled and eventually tested many packaged bars... Although I packed them many years past the date, I never once got sick from a stale energy bar or candy. Maybe I just got an iron gut, but I doubt many folk would be hindered by a stale, extra pre-ser-va-tised, bar of sugar and protein...
