glassgowkiss Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 [video:youtube] I am getting psyched to go back and shoot some more, so I can finish project this winter. I bet the routes on Colfax could be in shape and the road is still open. I am sure the temps stay below freezing all day and that face doesn't see any sun at this time of the year. Quote
G-spotter Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 I saw this yesterday. Although Colfax is higher, i'm betting a few more weeks might be required. Quote
glassgowkiss Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 I think Colfax would be good now. It forms from snow melt, not drip water and the routes start about 8600 ft., which is much higher then anything else. When my route exactly in this type of conditions and exactly same time of year. I bet is about 25F day and low teens at night. The same year I drove up Duffy, over a months after doing Colfax and there were some driblets of ice, but even Marble was not really formed. Quote
Alex Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Agree with Bob, I'd like to see some pics of Colfax, it usually forms up well after the first fall storm.... Quote
G-spotter Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Pic above is at 7000' and we could see all the way up to 8500' without any evidence of thicker ice higher up. Ice has only been forming since Wednesday and is not particularly thick anywhere up there. Storm coming in tomorrow should be cold though, and dump a bunch more snow in time for the sunny conditions again next week. But hey, go ski up there and prove me wrong if you think it's fat enough to climb right now. Quote
John Frieh Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 "In" is relative. Based on the photo I'd say it's at least worth the hike to have a better look but given the forecast I'd say you have until Wednesday afternoon to climb it  Quote

spionin Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 here, a little present (from yesterday, fellers) Â we both agreed that the upper tier of the big boy is not touching down yet. Â the second pitch of c-h is currently a pillar on the right, overhanging on the left and thin on top. Â bottom pitch is vertical snice and rime. Â snowshoes not required for approach, but having gone on a warmer day probably helped consolidation. the downside of going on a warmer day is getting pelletted nonstop. parts of the trail along hogsback are quite icy at this point. Â get 'er. Quote
Choada_Boy Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 How were the upper pitches of the CH? Any snow at the trail head yet? Quote
spionin Posted October 27, 2011 Posted October 27, 2011 How were the upper pitches of the CH? Â at this point, probably better than this b/c it's been consistently cold. Â Â but with all the recent snowfall it might be difficult to climb steep powder on top. these guys mention 3-4" of powder on crust two days ago, and it's been snowing since then: http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=22080.0 Â 6-10" of fresh predicted for tomorrow. Â Any snow at the trail head yet? the freezing level hasn't dipped that low yet and there shouldn't be any snow on the road. the trail is icy in spots, however. especially along hogsback. Â Quote
