Jim Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 A valued colleague is leaving my workplace - husband got a great new job in the Bay area. Looking for a nice book as a farewell - they are both climbers/skiers. Thanks. Quote

Dave A. Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 The title of the book listed above from blurb.com is North Cascades Traverses by Bob Kandiko. I ordered mine last week and it arrived in 3 or 4 days. The book is fantastic, highly recommended. Dave A. P.S. I suspect a lot of people will be using this for a ticklist. All the routes look great. Lisa_D Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 I know Bob as "Mr. Kandiko." He was my 7th-8th grade science teacher. Come to think of it, he used to use a lot of mountaineering examples.. I want a copy! Quote
genepires Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Bob Kandiko is a legend. He taught my basic climbing class for the belligham mountaineers back in the day. Him and Karen are some really cool people! Quote
JasonG Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 Holy cow, I need to get a copy of Bob's book! He showed me copy #1 last year and had no idea that it was for sale. It was stunning to say the least, and an impressive effort for someone working on it nights and weekends. I will be buying a hardbound copy ASAP . . .. Quote
banos Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 A book of North Cascade Traverses does not include Ptarmigan? Quote
Dave A. Posted February 14, 2011 Posted February 14, 2011 This site has at least 1/2 doz. trip reports on Ptarmigan- Google gives you dozens more. You can preview the book( every page) on the blurb.com website. I can't imagine anyone that enjoys photos of the North Cascades being disappointed in this book. Quote
banos Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 I agree.. It's an awesome book.. I paged thru the entire preview on the Blurb's website... I'll consider getting one myself... I am simpley a bit surprised it does not include the Ptarmigan.. Certainly would not be a deal breaker.. just surprising.. Quote
Crack Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Ed Cooper's Soul of the Heights -though it isn't limited to the PNW... Quote
Teh Phuzzy Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 great thread folks I'd love to hear more suggestions. Quote
Jake_Gano Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 (edited) North Cascades Crest by Jim Martin Edited February 15, 2011 by Jake_Gano Quote
Dave A. Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 Absolutely agree- Soul of the heights is probably my favorite photo book. High Rocks and Ice by Ira Spring is another excellent book of Cascades photos.Tom Millers 1964 The North Cascades covers the Ptarmigan Traverse and is the inspiration for Bob Kandikos book.Chessler books has several copies available for under $100 (used, of course). I'm sure that would be a cherished gift for any Wash. climber. Quote
goatboy Posted February 15, 2011 Posted February 15, 2011 North Cascades Crest by Jim Nelson You are referring to a book by Jim MARTIN, which is the one I linked above. Quote
Jim Posted February 28, 2011 Author Posted February 28, 2011 FYI - I thought I would close the loop here. I ordered this: Bob Kandiko's North Cascades Traverses! http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/invited/1485261/86152bae2d034fbb485997fd4e7c5f63#author-bookshelf In short - it's disappointing. While the photos look crisp online the printed version is not - surprisingly fuzzy and poor color tones. The choice of fonts and backgrounds for the narrative is odd and difficult to read - the maps are not sharp either. Good idea - poor quality product. I've completed projects in desktop publishing that look much better than this effort. I would not recomend the book. Quote
alpenlady Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 (edited) North Cascades Crest by James Martin really is beautiful. Other posts had the author's name as Jim Martin and Jim Nelson - but his name is actually James Martin - I have the book in front of me right now. I know you ordered one but maybe you could return it and try again. Edited March 9, 2011 by alpenlady Quote
goatboy Posted March 9, 2011 Posted March 9, 2011 I am also disappointed in the quality of the N Cascades Traverses book. Great content, bad execution, printing, and nonexistent copy editing. Quote
