billcoe Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Damn - sorry to hear of it. "said crews will remove the victim from the mountain later today." I don't envy the "crews", today's the kind of day you want to snuggle up next to a fire. Quote

TMO Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 Damn dangerous descent route. So many have run into trouble there. It could have happened to any of us. Quote
Frikadeller Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Damn dangerous descent route. So many have run into trouble there. It could have happened to any of us. In a whiteout, yes. On a nice day, you'd have a hard time getting a fresh line if you use a "glisse descent device"... (read: ski or snowboard) Just curious, where they attempting a climb of the Coe Headwall, or did the victim fall from snowdome down to the Coe? The news report did not specify. Sorry to hear of the accident. Quote

ivan Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Bob Wiebe posted on both TTips (telemon) and TAY shitty - better when total strangers die if he was a skiier, than likely not climbing the coe, but just getting turns in on the snowdome, eh? Quote
sean_beanntan Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Hi Folks, just a quick update. The subject was skiing up Snowdome in a group of five. As they got near the top of Snowdome, weather clouds came in and reduced visibility. Snowdome looks like a triangular moraine in that it is wide at the base and narrow at the top. The top of the dome also gets a little steeper on the climbers right. In the low vis, the subject traversed, (out of sight of the others) a little more to the right than normal, unaware of the opening exposure to the Coe Glacier and the slightly steeper incline. At the top of the dome, when the subject failed to appear, the remainder of the party began a search. It appears that he fell while still skining upwards. Attempts at bringing the subject down from the mountain on Wednesday were hampered by high winds, blowing snow and no visibility. (The litter at one stage lifted several feet off the ground acting as a kite for a few seconds) Quote
billbob Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Hey Sean, Thanks for the update. Big thanks to all the mountain rescue folks working the mission, this has got to be a tough recovery. Quote
