I saw an iPad being used in public recently for the first time. It was in a museum: nationally renowned show, $20 tickets, amazing works. This guy is sitting by himself on a bench, staring into his screen, updating his Facebook status. Awesome.

4GB of DDR3 RAM, 360GB hard drive, independent graphics with a 13" laptop when a comparably-priced netbook will only get you an anemic 1GB RAM and 1 GHz processor. Look at the HP Pavilion DM3. $550 bucks and you get a real laptop that you will actually use. Very thin, metal body, 8 hour battery, and, most important, a solid keyboard with no bounce. HDMI socket too. I had a Nokia netbook--gave it away.

My 2 cent.

Also: keep in mind that the "starter" version of Win7 that comes with most netbooks is limited. Won't run more than 3 applications at once--and then, not very well.

That's an ok deal, but that processor is weak sauce. Good enough for making spread sheets though.

It's still fairly expensive to get a minibook with really good performance = $1K+

I just bought a new notebook and had to settle for a 15" screen to keep the cost down. Look into Intel's new itype chips - they can be more "green" too.

If you need a machine for more than surfing the web and checking your email, you may want to reconsider the netbook idea. They're not sufficient for most work/office usage - YET. My opinion after pondering my purchase for a while.

I couldn't get myself to make the jump to a netbook in lieu of a notebook. Check on the cost of good internet and factor that in too.

Good luck - this type of thing is a pain in the arss. I don't think running any of those programs at the same time will be quick.

I just need something portable that will run a spreadsheet, a PPT, or a word doc, and allow me to spray 24/7 from anywhere on earth. Seems like netbooks do all that in a cheap, small format.
You're right, you should get a netbook.

Look on CL. Lots of people are probably unloading them after getting a magical iPad. Cash in before they come to their senses.
