mike1 Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 (edited) I need some ideas on reasonably priced synthetic insulated puffy's out there that are of course light and compact-able... what are you all wearing? Oh yeah, warm would be good too. Edited December 13, 2008 by Mikester Quote
Frikadeller Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 If green is your color, this is a smokin' deal. http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/product_focus.jsp?OPTION=PRODUCT_FOCUS_DISPLAY_HANDLER&catcode=WS_FA_US.WEB_SPECIALS.MENS.JACKETS_DOWN/SYNTHETIC&style_color=19035-984&ws=true Quote
Klimber Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I recommend this http://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?cat_id=73&p_id=2301405 Quote
mike1 Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 think I'll head to Patagonia and try that green thing on... Quote
Farrgo Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 I've had a mountain hardware chugach jacket for years... can get it for under $100 right now. http://alpenglowgear.com/gear/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1176 Quote
kurthicks Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 if you're looking for warm, that Montbell does not compare to the other models mentioned. it's a great jacket, but not a full winter belay jacket. for that, the montbell flatiron is more suited. EMS is having a decent sale on puffies. http://www.ems.com/catalog/subcategory_simple.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302899673 Quote
genepires Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 I have both the micro puff and the das. the micro goes everywhere while the das hasn't left the closet. (I am a closet gear whore) The point is, I like and use the micro a lot and worth looking at. You have to ask yourself what conditions do you really want to be and expect to be out in if you are looking at jackets. I wanted to be hardcore and need the das but alas, I am a wanker and do fine with the micropuff. Quote
Matt Kidd Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 (edited) Do the micro puff and the DAS size the or did you buy different sizing? Looks like a good deal on the DAS buy never like buying anything that I haven't tried on. I do have the micro puff and I have to admit that I have rarely wanted any more warmth just as you suggested... Edited December 14, 2008 by Matt Kidd Quote
Frikadeller Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 According to Patagucci and from others I have heard, is that the DAS is intended to be a belay parka. One that you pull over all your other layers when you have to stop, belay, or some use it as part of a bivy system with a half bag. I don't own one, I just thought that it seemed like a good buy. I also noticed that on the patagucci site they had some micropuff on clearance as well, but the sizes where more restricted. Oh and yeah, I think that all this "green" patagucci stuff is actually military surplus. Quote
Frikadeller Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 think I'll head to Patagonia and try that green thing on... just make sure that you get it from the web site, or you will pay retail. But, hey, that's what is nice that there is a patagucci outlet in PDX... Quote

genepires Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 I think I need the das to get the mail and trash cans this morning! for about half off, that pata das deal is hard to pass up. practically a pro/bro deal. Quote

But, hey, that's what is nice that there is a patagucci outlet in PDX... I called to make sure they had one in stock and asked about the sale price. They confirmed what you said. I tried on the Green thing and it was a bit more than I was looking for. Awesome deal, but I wanted something lighter and more compressable... I ended up heading up a few blocks to REI to see what they had since I was in town. I picked up the Mountain Hardwear Compressor for 20% off. It doesn't look like something I'd want to go sliding across a granite face in, but at least I can take it back if I find a better deal. REI's saving grace... Thanks everyone! Quote
dbconlin Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 The DAS is probably more warmth than you need in most conditions...I have one and am now looking into getting something lighter for 3-season use. Except today. Glad to have it. Quote
robpatterson5 Posted December 15, 2008 Posted December 15, 2008 Anyone used the Cocoon Parka from BPL.com? I've been looking at it for a bit since it seems like a 10oz version of the Patagonia. Quote
Le Piston Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I don't know if you can still get it anywhere, but the Moonstone Cirrus is a nice warm reasonably light hooded synthetic jacket. Quote
mountainmandoug Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 I have a Cocoon Pro 60 parka from BPL. It is an excellent piece of gear. It's a bit warmer than it looks, I use it alone as my belay parka most of the year here in WA and I layer it over a puffy vest in the winter. The hood works well with a helmet and it will fit over my other layers with no problem. The outer shell is quite water-resistant. It plus my Patagonia vest weigh less than most other coats this warm. It's probably similar in warmth to the Patagonia micro-puff. I highly reccomend it. Quote
robpatterson5 Posted December 17, 2008 Posted December 17, 2008 Thanks - any comments on the sizeing? I've heard that its a little wonky? I think I'm thinking of the same layering system as you are using; I'm usually a medium or a small (5'9, 160 lb). Quote
designgrizzly Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Are there any tall, gangly guys out there (like 6'3", 190 pounds) who've found a good fit? I tried the MicroPuff, and found the medium to fit well, except the sleeves were too short. The large was way too big to be warm, even with a few layers underneath. I suspect this is a common problem... Quote
mountainmandoug Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 I am 5'11'' and 160lb and I'd say the medium is just right over a couple of baselayers, a windshirt and puffy vest. I'm not sure what the screwy sizing would be accept that it is quite roomy without layers underneath and that might be strange if you were expecting a normal fit. Quote
robpatterson5 Posted December 18, 2008 Posted December 18, 2008 Thanks Doug I think that explains what I've been hearing re: sizeing on bpl Quote
MattS Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Mountain Hardwear hooded compressor jacket - I really like this one. I can stuff it into a 1 liter stuff sack and it's super light. I wear it as a belay parka at temperatures 20+ and I use it as my insulation layer at temperatures below 20. Really nice and versitale. The only drawback is the fabric is pretty thin so you don't want to be climbing in chimneys in this. Quote
mike1 Posted December 20, 2008 Author Posted December 20, 2008 MH is sized kinda small though. I was trying on larges of other brands until I hit Mountain Hardwear. Had to go XL to make sure my arms were covered. Quote
Vickster Posted December 26, 2008 Posted December 26, 2008 For my lite synthetic jacket is use http://www.rei.com/product/753467 and it rocks.... got it for 30 bucks in the REI basement My heavier synthetic is The Belay jacket found here http://www.wildthingsgear.com/prod_insulation.php it also rocks... If I were to get a top of the line synthetic hoodie id probably go with the Wild Things EP Hooded jacket. If it is made anything like my belay jacket it will be good stuff. Jim Quote
jared_j Posted January 5, 2009 Posted January 5, 2009 Patagonia micro puff hoodies and non - hoodies mega mega on sale here ; doesn't get much cheaper than that for new stuff, and they still have non - Lou Ferrigno sizes available. Quote
