Off_White Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Anyone know the uber secret how-to-turn-off-automatic-style-update beta for Word 2007? When I indent one line I don't want the whole fucking document to indent. Don't suggest a hammer, already tried it and it didn't help. Quote
murraysovereign Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Don't suggest a hammer, already tried it and it didn't help. I'd suggest a bigger hammer. Quote
wayne Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I hate updates sometimes it just screws things up! Somewhere along the way I-Tunes got totally f-up Quote
G-spotter Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Hit that funky Office bubble at top left and choose the tiny little "Word Options" tab at the bottom right of that window. Now play around with AutoCorrect settings until it stops doing that. Now hunt through the Menus until you find the "Clippy" option and turn it on. The next time you can't figure out what to do, just ask Clippy! Quote
Off_White Posted June 10, 2008 Author Posted June 10, 2008 Yeah, maybe I just haven't fumbled with the options enough, I've poked at them with no relief so far. No Zombie Clippy thank you very much, Clippy must stay dead. Quote
Off_White Posted June 10, 2008 Author Posted June 10, 2008 No, even with EVERY OPTION in both Auto Format and Auto Format As You Type unchecked, the dastardly thing still auto updates. Quote
AlpineK Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I find the 2007 version annoying when you try and send a document, but not everybody and their brother has the 2007 version. I figured out the way around, but it bugs me. Quote
mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I think Microsoft is one of the only companies whose software has purposefully not been "backwards compatible" - I wonder has this really increased sales or simply pissed everybody off for the last 20 years? I realize MS still carries the market, but I have always thought Corel WordPerfect a superior product. It still has some glitches like OffWhite is experiencing, though not with such a basic thing as indenting a lead paragraph. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I think Microsoft is one of the only companies whose software has purposefully not been "backwards compatible" - I wonder has this really increased sales or simply pissed everybody off for the last 20 years? One look at the profit margins on Office will answer that question. Quote
mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Office has done well, but do you think this is due to making their product obsolete every three years, to superior marketing, or maybe to unfair business practices? Quote
Fairweather Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Office has done well, but do you think this is due to making their product obsolete every three years, to superior marketing, or maybe to unfair business practices? A right-wing conspiracy, Matt? Could be that it's actually a superior product that attempts to adapt to a changing world and constant technological hardware improvements? It would be nice if the complete upgrades were free, but someone has to pay those code writers, shareholders, etc. If someone is unhappy with MS products, there are still completely viable alternatives like the one you mentioned. Imagine a world where everyone was still using Windows 3.1...or DOS. Things change, and I like MS products despite a moderately frustrating learning curve. Quote
Bug Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Office 2007, IIS 7.0, Visual Studio 2008, Windows Server 2008, and MOSS are the new rage for Office integration. If you are using all or even some of it and set up your Office software to integrate with your file system it is a pretty slick system. And "no", you do not have to be a republican. "Take Back Your Life" by McPhee is a book about the Office 2007 components and organizing your life. I highly recommend it if you use Outlook. Quote
mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I'm not sure what your point is, Fairweather, except that if I say X, you are going to say Y -- just like in the McCain speech thread running concurrently. I wonder if here, just as there, you don't really know: have you run both Word and WordPerfect in every new version for the last 15 years? I have. I'm sure there are some who may think Word a better product, but I sure don't. The only reason I run Word is because everybody else does. Quote
CPOly Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Off, go back to the AutoCorrect Options window, under the AutoFormat As You Type tab, un-check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces" box near the bottom. This worked for me, no more whole paragraph indent. Quote
Fairweather Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 (edited) I'm not sure what your point is, Fairweather, except that if I say X, you are going to say Y -- just like in the McCain speech thread running concurrently. I wonder if here, just as there, you don't really know: have you run both Word and WordPerfect in every new version for the last 15 years? I have. I'm sure there are some who may think Word a better product, but I sure don't. The only reason I run Word is because everybody else does. You brought up "unfair" business practices. I'm just suggesting you elaborate. What do you consider so unfair? Is it simply their success? Is it that classic liberal/socialist desire for equal outcomes? mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Do you read the newspaper, Fairweather? Microsoft's "aggressive" business practices have been a topic of mention for AT LEAST 15 years. It is not a right wing vs left wing thing. Again I ask: do you have experience comparing Word to WordPerfect over the last two decades? Have you run recent versions of both? Maybe you've found some great aspects of Word that I've missed. Quote
Fairweather Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Agressive? I know there are some (clearing throat noise) who just hate aggressive. Quote
mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 By the way: how was the double header last weekend? In my present condition, I can't imagine climbing both those peaks in a day. Quote

MS has already resolved the US issues. I'm asking you to think beyond what you read in the NYTimes. Quote
Fairweather Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 By the way: how was the double header last weekend? In my present condition, I can't imagine climbing both those peaks in a day. Mailbox/Granite became Mailbox/Tiger Cable. It rained and snowed Saturday and the trail on Mailbox was a complete mudfest. It was so muddy I thought my boots were going to get sucked off my feet. Still a fair amount of snow above the trees on Mailbox too. Went mountain biking in mostly-sunny CleElum yesterday. Much nicer. Quote
mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 I've already made it clear here, I think, that I believe they have produced a bad product. Beyond just word processing, I'm not impressed with their operating system development. I'm not an Apple guy, but there is a lot of truth to their recent add campaign about Microsoft Vista running like hell, as far as I have heard (this has not been forced upon me yet). Microsoft has been plagued by security problems and gliches and bloated software and you name the problem forever. Don't get me wrong: I realize it is a complex business and I appreciate the fact that revenues have supported development, but I just don't have a glowing sense that Microsoft has been best, only that they've been biggest. Back to the topic here: WordPerfect has been superior to Word in virtually every stage of development, as far as I have seen. I don't think Off White would have had his problem with WordPerfect -- not even for 30 seconds. I don't know how Microsoft took over the market but it is pretty clear to me that once they did so they launched a marketing campaign of planned obsolescence that makes Wirlpool and Maytag look like chumps. And I actually think the EU got it right. They have taken advantage of their marketing position to bundle products that I, for one don't want (and I bet you if we were in different positions and we were arguing about "free choice"). As a business model, perhaps impressive. As a model of "free market makes good for the people" I think not so much. Quote
mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 By the way: good job on the training hikes. I have never hiked any of the standard Si, Mailbox, Tiger training hikes but lately I have been thinking that I might benefit from some of that. Quote
mattp Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 One more by the way: OffWhite got his answer, maybe. That's be cool if cc.com was in the present case useful for actually getting information in addition to pontificating from those looking for entertainment like me and Mr. F. What do you say, Mr. Off? Are you high fiving or looking for a bigger hammer? Quote
