Wasn't trying to get all self righteous or anything... and the boyfriend comment was just a joke. I realize that I still live a much more wasteful lifestyle than most people in the world... partly because i'm a middle-class American and can afford to buy lots of things. That's no excuse though. I'm trying to make concious efforts every day to cut back on the footprint i'll leave here and i realize that i have my work cut out for me. My room is about the size of a king bed and i feel incredibly priviledged to have it. I don't eat red meat, try to walk or bike wherever i can rain or shine, try to buy local, etc. All of which are steps in the right direction. I think we should all be affirming each other for the small steps we're trying to make, since it seems like most of ya'll are trying to do your part to be less wasteful.

The price of gas really isn't that big of a deal, which is why, at the end of the year, I predict that the percentage of trips taken on public transportation will, once again, decline.

More and more people are driving solo because, as a whole, our society is getting richer and more people can afford to do travel in their preferred mode.

Also, just do some simple math. If I'm going to drive 120 miles to go climbing this weekend, and my pickup gets 15 mpg, that works out to 8 gallons of gas. Which means if gas has gone from $2 a gallon to $3 a gallon, all it costs me is an extra $8. Big freakin' whoop.

I think climbers will be more willing to do trips with parties of three, just to split up the fuel costs more favorably. Seems like you can get three into most any car for a weekend trip, but you need a large vehicle to cram in four.

Time to buy that set of half ropes and get that ATC Guide you've been wanting.

FUCK!

no fuck you. you supported this administration and their energy policy. so eat shit and live now biatch

All right troll, here goes.

According to some of the response I've seen above and in other related thread DEMO/LIBERAL social engineers actually *want* higher prices. They savor the idea of $4/gallon or more - just like in Euro-Utopia-Socialism land. If only gas prices were *even higher* then all those evil car-driving, CO2-emitting Americans would change their driving habits, taking buses and riding bicycles, and we would be so much greener and eco-friendly. Thus, those who oppose Bush want higher gas prices then we have now under Bush and would support such policies. And "supporting Bush" would equate to lower gas prices, relatively speaking.

Put that in your (crack) pipe and smoke it.

i think you may have read the Illuminatis trilogy

No, supporting Bush would equate to being a moron, just as it always has, and KKK remains the most steadfast poster child.

Paying 5 or more dollars per gallon seems like a pretty cheap price for a stable climate to me. Walk, ride, take the bus, or carpool; no big damn deal.

face it as far as politics goes, everyone wants somthing, no ones willing to compermise to get what they want they just want what they want now, and arn't willing to admit to, or take the scrafices that are necisary to get it. also noone really knows what they want, they just think they want something and if and when that somthing comes but things arn't they way they planed it to be when they get what they want, its somone elses fault.

Building rail systems is an incredible waste of money.

1. The vast majority of people who will use light rail will simply be people who would otherwise ride the bus, so congestion is not impacted.

2. Light rail is vastly more expensive than bus systems

3. Light rail is inflexible and can not adapt to changing consumer behavior, where-as a bus system is perfectly flexible

Finally, for the price of light rail in Seattle, we could double the number of buses on the road, and make all rides free. That would be a much better use of public funds.

Rail is an 1800's technology which just doesn't fit in the modern world. Rail is all about centralization and fixed assets; the modern commute is all about decentralization and flexibility.

Here's some data on the experience of other cities which have installed rail systems:

it is my understanding that using a train system in the US the way it is used in the Europe is not possible because of how large our country is. it's too bad really. but having ridden the train to Washington form Eugene, well my train was 5 hours late... i could have driven in the time i sat at the train station and waited for the fucking train.
