Well, something tells me my 6 year-old is ready for climbing.

Anybody have any gear recommendations for a little guy? Specifically, I'm looking for a harness and rock shoes that will fit his small frame.

TIA!

I have a full-body kids harness you can borrow. I dont remember the minimun size for the thing but its made for kids and is very adjustable so it should work for a 6yo.

email me if you are interested.

cheers,

Brian :-)

My 10 year old has pretty much outgrown his full body harness. It's in perfect condition. I'm just gonna squeeze the rest of the month out of it so if you can wait that long I'll sell/trade it.

The shoes part just sucks because their feet grow so fast. Buy big and have him wear socks. Kids don't enjoy having their feet crushed into shoes 2 sizes too small like we do anyway.

Until they’re really hooked on outdoor climbing (like 5.10 slabs), I’m not sure they need rock shoes. I find things for my kids that are doable in tennies and focus on fun more than difficulty. The adjustable body harnesses most places carry are a good pickup though.

Is there any interest? I have a 5 year old son who cranks and loves to go wilding, so if we can put together a few folks with kids we could all hang out. Last year seemed to be pretty fun for both the kids and the parents.

Any interest? Other peeps with kids (especially around 5) that would be interested in a weekend of climbing/camping up in the Icicle?

Or we could camp on the river at Index with Coach and have the kids ropegun thin fingers.

Prolly better to go to Leavenworth though...gonna go up sometime mid-Sept, so let me know if you and your spawn want to join us.

Oly,

A possible Leavenworth trip sounds great! My boys are 5 1/2 and almotst 7.

Unfortunately, I have been seriously remiss about teaching my boys to climb (other than the wall I made while in school to keep myself sane cantfocus.gif). They are stronger than I am (the oldest was making moves on my 45 overhang at 5), but they don't know jack about real rock. I will be looking for some clubs/classes for them (and refresher/more advanced stuff for me) when we get to Spokane in September. We've also have family in Leavenworth, so that would be my vote for a location.

In short, I'd love to meet some like-minded people and show the boys what they've been missing, but if you want the kids to have some intermediate skills before hand, we may have to do some catch-up work first.

Ya, i haven't worried about teaching Ulee too much...I just set up a top rop and let him climb. He climbed a 5.8 route earlier this year with only a little help out at in the tumwater canyon.

I'll probably hold off on him leading until he is 6. tongue.gif

I started all three of my boys as soon as they could walk. Used the dead soles off my re-soled rock shoes to resole their old tennies (cheaper than kids rock shoes which they'll outgrow in a season, anyway.) My youngest (12 years old), now follows 5.10 rock and wi4 ice, prefers ice to rock. I live in Leavenworth, so pm me if you're coming to town and we can try for a kids day...
