MountaingirlBC Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 I'm bored out of my freakin mind on my stair climber and need something to take my mind off the 60lbs on my back and the 60 min on the clock. TV sucks. I've watched Touching the Void way too much. Any other reccomendations? I tried that new 'SubZero' movie that is in video stores now and I can safely say that that was hands down the worst climbing movie I have ever seen in my life. It's worth renting just for a laugh. I actually watched it twice because it was so bad I had to show my friends. They're on the summit of K2 (which they got to in about 72 hours from sea level) walking 6 abreast with ski runs and trees in the background. And there's LOTS more where that came from. Anyway... something NOT like that please. I need some eye candy to keep me motivated. Quote
Couloir Posted April 27, 2006 Posted April 27, 2006 Here is a site that I have purchased movies from. The Wonderland Project, though not necessarily about climbing, is a documentary about a couple of cats that ran the Wonderland Trail (94 miles / 22,000 ft elev gain) in 24 Hours. Watch the clip, it's a great film. There are also some other cool movies here though that do have climbing in them. Quote
NTM Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 oh man, there's TONS! of course the classics: The Eiger Sanction, Vertical Limit and Cliffhanger. One of the infinite ADD-type boulding videos (pumping techno and loud slaps on sloperz) or another climbing porn (Frequent Fliers is rad, so is Return to Sender). Then there are the movies that have short clips that climbers get to laugh at. Bringing out the Dead (with Nick Cage) isn't half bad on its own, but includes a wicked rescue of a guy impaled on an iron fence on the 3rd floor. The Fire Dept guys pound a piton into the mortar between two bricks which of course holds 2-3 people falling (outward pull nonetheless!). This should get you started. Quote
MountaingirlBC Posted April 28, 2006 Author Posted April 28, 2006 Thank you Couloir.. that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I rented the 1st season of House which is so far pretty good. Never tire of the dark brooding brilliant doctor role. I loved Bringing out the Dead... pretty much anything with Nick Cage in it is good. Gone in 60 seconds was good too... and had the added bonus of Angelina *yummy* I've been saving Eiger Sanction to watch on a rainy weekend with my climbing buddies. Vertical Limit was pretty silly but better than Oprah. Haven't seen Cliffhanger in a million years so I might check that one out again. Quote
cj001f Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 Not out on DVD that I know, but one of the best climbing movies http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090851/ Quote
mughjie Posted April 28, 2006 Posted April 28, 2006 Not out in any format, as far as I know, but this one has a fab reputation and local flavor: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080869/ Quote
Couloir Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 Nick Cage - Leaving Las Vegas is a good film. Brutal, and tragic, but a good film nonetheless. <--- A lot of this. Quote

Bigtree Posted April 29, 2006 Posted April 29, 2006 ...the classics: The Eiger Sanction, Vertical Limit and Cliffhanger. You can find the bittorrent for Eiger Sanction here (not that I would ever download stuff like this for free mind you): http://ts.searching.com/search.asp?h=&query=Eiger+Sanction&submit.x=20&submit.y=7. The scenery is great but the hollywood schtick was too much for me - like Clint's green construction helmet. ...and you can find Cliffhanger here: http://ts.searching.com/search.asp?h=&query=cliffhanger&submit.x=0&submit.y=0 ...and although you didn't mention it, Touching The Void has got some very realistic scenes: http://ts.searching.com/search.asp?h=&query=touching+the+void&submit.x=0&submit.y=0. mountainmatt Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 This movie is sooo bad, you will have problems finishing it. However, if you make it through, you will find yourself quoting it for the rest of your life. Best with friends and beer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251422/ Quote
Stuart Posted June 15, 2006 Posted June 15, 2006 http://www.alhughes.tv/ This has just been converted to DVD. Absolute classic!!! Quote

mountainmatt Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 try the movie Gummo its the best movie I have ever seen That movie is terrible. If you want to watch a strange indi film, check out drowning by numbers. But of course, neither of these films have any climbing in them. Quote
plexus Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 Eiger Station is a classic. Also Touching the Void is inspirational. You almost feel guilty watching the two climbers revisit the scene of the whole episode; it's like you're looking in on a conversation you're not supposed. Quote
olyclimber Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 has anyone read the book the Eiger Sanction was based on? Quote
Alpinfox Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 What book are you talking about? The White Spider? Heinrich Harrer? Yes. Quote
G-spotter Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 He means "The Eiger Sanction" by Trevanian. "Shibumi" is way better. Quote
cj001f Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 He means "The Eiger Sanction" by Trevanian. "Shibumi" is way better. And "The Loo Sanction" is fit for the loo. Quote
G-spotter Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 "Incident at Twentymile", on the other hand, is funny. Quote
mccallboater Posted September 21, 2006 Posted September 21, 2006 What!! Are you all too young for the greatest climbing movie of all time, IMHO, "The Mountain" with Spencer Tracy, made in 1956. Wait till you see Tracy's standing hip belay catch of a 30 footer. The climbing is a little Hollywood but not nearly so bad as in Cliffhanger, plus the story is ok too. http://www.amazon.com/Mountain-Edward-Dmytryk/dp/630110594X Quote
